View Full Version : Pregnancy And Old Wives Tales?
Jabberwocky 10-09-2006, 15:13 Im sure youve all heared them, the home-spun methods of determining weather the pregnant mother is going to have a girl or a boy. The holding of the needle over the lump to decide on the sex of the baby, if it swings left to right its a boy, but if it spins its going to be a girl, things like that.
Anyone know of any other ones? Anyone actually found any of these methods to work?
stardust100 10-09-2006, 15:20 I heard a wedding ring on string over bump
Jabberwocky 10-09-2006, 15:21 I have one of those crystal things on a chain that I bought a long time ago, i bought it because it was shiny and im tempted to have a go at the bump with that.
babychickens 10-09-2006, 19:52 My friend Sabrina (neither teenaged nor witchy) is of chinese extraction, and passed on a few good ones to me, one of them being that you're going to go in to labour if you can balance a rice bowl (not bowel, as i just wrote) on your belly. Very vague and applies every time i lie down.
rubydazzler 10-09-2006, 20:07 The old wives used to say you carried boys at the front and girls all the way round.
In other words, if the bump is all at the front, it's a boy. If you get big all over, it's a girl!
It worked for me!

didn't work for me. i had a comedy 'balloon up t shirt' bump - entirely at the front - but it was a girl. at least she seems to be, anyway.

Ah! well, you can't win em all :D
The wedding ring on a string - or any pendulum - is believed to work by dowsers.
I remember reading years ago that it was also used to sex day-old chickens, before you could easily tell the difference by looking. Mind you, I wouldn't know what to look for....

Ive seen a dowser in action and it DOES work, so there could be something in that.
rubydazzler 10-09-2006, 21:19 I can dowse, Jabber ... well I can dowse for water and ley lines ... not sure about sexing chickens though :D

I've tried dowsing and have had some success; not entirely sure how it does it but it seems to work. I'm not sure enough of my abilities to make money at it though! :)
Or to suggest to people that they should paint their nurseries blue... :)

As you will know, you either have the power, or you don't have it ... it's not something you can learn ...
Not sure how you could make money at it ... unless you were dowsing for black gold .... *eyes light up*
Jabberwocky 11-09-2006, 13:39 When I worked for the Water authority they hired Dowsers to locate underground springs and such so they obviously work. Fascinating stuff.
Ive done the ring on a string test and been right both times before we had the scan and found out,
I found having my girl i didnt have to shave my legs as much but with my son i was doing them every 2 days :)

So theres definately something there then... You cant argue with that can you? My other half is also getting hairy and aggressive with it so Im thinking that shes carrying a boy.
Im patiently waiting for a scan thatll show the sex of the baby to see if im right.
OOO I will wait and see Jabberwocky, both me and my fella couldnt believe it,
Hormones are a biggy to with dd i was mellow and cried a lot with ds i broke a lot of plates :P
Also the hair thing worked for a fair few of my friends too
Jabberwocky 11-09-2006, 18:06 Well the scan my other half had was the 13 week scan and we couldnt tell the sex.
The next one should do it though.
Jellyfish 11-09-2006, 18:28 The most ridiculous one I've heard is that if you conceived with your head pointing to the south it will be a girl, if you had your head pointing to the north it will be a boy!!!
Cause im sure you thinking about where your heads pointing hey :hihi:
lizzmobile 11-09-2006, 22:13 The ring on a string thing worked for me, and the carrying position was not true. I carried all mine out front, boys and girls, nice and tidy, including my hugeous twins!!
Hey Jabbers don't find out mate! It's so much nicer to have the surprise!
PS Din't know you were expecting? I just thought it was your hunchback

Id love to have the luxury of waiting until the big day before discovering the sex of the baby, but Im afraid thats impossible.
Im just too damn impatient! :D I cant help being all excited can i???
Im hoping that its a boy because if it is I want to name him Dominic! Trouble is my other half flatly refuses to allow me to name him that so I need to know the sex NOW so that I can start nagging early.
Shes younger than me and she wants to give any child we have a "Modern" name, such as "tea-pot-tickle-trumpton-ville".
I wont have it i tell ya!!!!
Old names are the way forward, No new fancy ones, :hihi:
I was soo excited i NEEDED to know what sex they both were :)
Hi
Im not going to find out what sex im havin when i go for my 20 week scan but i would be intrested what women went thru whilst pregnant and what sex you had when he/she was born.
For instance
I haven't been sick once (and by the sounds of what it make u feel like i thank my lucky stars) people say that if ur not sick as much ur havin a boy. Ya know, those old wives tales etc
How true is this and what did you go through?
NatalieSheff 27-01-2007, 13:15 didnt feel sick with Mo but put on 5stone- everyone could tell he was a boy even b4 i said what scan said.
this time just have bump on front so far, but feel like poo.
i dont think you can tell-everyones diff, and hey ur 50/50 gonna guess right!
i was sick once and had a girl. i knew i was having a girl as its almost all girls in the family and mini savs dad had girls already so was really a sure thing!
kitty123 27-01-2007, 14:50 never was sick although felt it, had a huge bump for someone a size 10 and had a 9.8 boy, people also say you can tell by the way 'you carry' boy supposed to be low and girl high?
never felt sick with Sam (boy) and was told that boys rarely give morning sickness but this is probably another old wives tale.:loopy:
Also developed a hairy belly with Sam. I was also informed that this was due to the amount of male hormone due to carrying a boy:o
Cheers peeps
I was jus wandering what other people felt thru pregnancy and what sex baby they had.
:)
i felt sick all day long, tho was neva actually sick sometimes wished i cud be to get it over and done with....and i had a boy, i'd convinced myself it was a girl i was carrying because of all old wives tales, i did find out at the scan that baby was gonna be a boy.....and was quite shocked lol...my mum was same when she had my bruv apparantly, yet when carrying me she felt wonderful.....i guess we're all different....
I had twin girls and no morning sickness at all.
Someone once told me that boys make you sick because of the alteration in the hormone levels in your system.
PIF_Tails 27-01-2007, 21:32 I had no sickness and a bump at the front...both are meant to be signs of a boy, yet I had a beautiful baby girl :)
However the old wives tale of heartburn equals baby born with a head of hair did turn out to be true.
alirosdan 27-01-2007, 22:04 I had no sickness with either of my boys. I was so convinced they were boys though that even when I was in labour, we didn't have a girls name. I don't know what made me think they were boys, but it was almost as though I just knew.
summer1955 28-01-2007, 22:15 i can remember all my pregnancies even though the last was nearly 16 years ago and the first was nearly 34 years ago
1st son i had morning sickness for the first few months. i fainted quite a few times when i went out. i had high blood pressure for most of the end and was aenemic in the begining.i carried him all way round as they say you do for boys as i was told. he was induced as 4 days late and due to high blood pressure.
2nd son was sick all day for the first few months and fainted quiet a bit in the first few months, couldnt hardly eat. carried him the same as 1st.he was also 4 days late.
3rd son was not too bad had some morning sickness in the begining went dizzy but didnt faint. carried him the same as first he was 1 day early.
4th son was sick in the afternoon, didnt faint but had dizzy boughts carried him different was all in front everyone said its a girl this time with how i was carrying him.he was 15 days early.
the last one i tried doing some of the things that help you get a girl with what i read in a book and that didnt work.
tinkabel 28-01-2007, 23:30 I had morning sickness (all day sickness!!) for the first 7 months, horrendous heartburn, carried all at the front, small bump and out popped an almost 9lb bald baby boy 3 weeks late!
Definately old wives tales although i knew he was a boy from the moment i found out, got told at 20 weeks that he was a girl though and felt kind of cheated, had a 4d scan at 29 weeks which confirmed he was a little boy!
Apple of my eye

OMG, this is so me!!!! Sickness all day, but not sick, heartburn, no bump as yet..... been told its a boy.
It better be a boy though as he has a blue bedroom and blue clothes!!!
I was lucky and had no sickness, just heartburn towards the end. I had a girl which is opposite to the old wive's tale on sickness. I didn't know the sex until she was born, and I was convinced she was a boy - I was wrong!
Here's a Birth chart for predicting the sex of your baby for a bit of fun, http://www.obfocus.com/calculators/birthchart.htm it was right for me.
deelightful3 29-01-2007, 13:14 when i was having my daughter i lost a stone in weight because i felt so sick for the 1st 3 months, she was born a lovely size though 6lb 5oz, i then had my son a few years later and never had a days sickness, this showed as he weighed in at 9lb 3oz,ouch,lol
meumeu77 29-01-2007, 15:46 I'm carrying it all out front. I've not been sick just very tired in first trimester.
I thought it would be a boy. I was right. But all women are different.
I have a boy and a girl and both pregnancies were totally different from each other. With my boy I felt sick in the the very beginning and never really craved anything. I was massive all the way round like a barrel! With my girl it was an awful pregnancy with constant sickness, constantly craving chestnuts (in the summer!) couldn't bare to smell anything nice ie, perfume, air freshners, washing powder, etc etc and my bump was nice and neat all up front! I was much smaller with her although she weighed 2lb heavier than my boy (???!!!)
tinkabel 29-01-2007, 21:52 OMG, this is so me!!!! Sickness all day, but not sick, heartburn, no bump as yet..... been told its a boy.
It better be a boy though as he has a blue bedroom and blue clothes!!!
4 pints of milk a night and a multipack of muller corner yogurts sorted it for me lol! I hated gaviscon and any other 'medicine' for heartburn, even the thought of it now is making my stomach turn :gag:
bladesgirl 30-01-2007, 22:06 I have had lots of heartburn and quite bad morning sickness at first............ but I finally feel great (at around 30 weeks) Also I have had unusual urges for sweets eg sherberts and fizzy worms (this is not like me I usually like savory things) and im having a girl. A lot have people have said ohhh sugar and spice for little girls ............. it was true in my case anyway. good luck:)
meumeu77 31-01-2007, 09:26 I have had lots of heartburn and quite bad morning sickness at first............ but I finally feel great (at around 30 weeks) Also I have had unusual urges for sweets eg sherberts and fizzy worms (this is not like me I usually like savory things) and im having a girl. I agree, I'm expecting a boy and most of my cravings have been for savoury food. I'm usually a chocoholic but have not been during my pregnancy!
Kerryleigh 18-02-2007, 16:13 Hi all
I havent found out what im having (im 36 weeks) and I was just wondering if the old wives tales like carrying 'all front' means your having a boy and carrying 'all round' means your having a girl have any truth in them?? The not knowing now is driving me mad now!!:loopy: What are your experiences? Does it seem to follow suit or do you think its a load of old cobblers???
XXXX
baileys_mum 18-02-2007, 16:56 Cobblers! :hihi: Carried both mine different but were the same flavor
summer1955 18-02-2007, 17:14 i was told it was the other way round all way round for boys and all front for girls but its not true i had 4 boys the last i carried him all front everyone kept saying its going to be a girl this time as i was carrying different but it wasnt
Kerryleigh 18-02-2007, 17:25 Everyone is telling me boy boy boy cos im all front..... I dont mind what i have as long as all ok. I felt really sick for 1st 3 months but was never actually sick and ive craved sweet things all way through. Also the little ones heartbeat has been consistenly high??? So confusing!!! :loopy: :loopy:
lots of morning sickness, carryibg at the front so far (29 weeks) and its 98% a girl, dont care as long as she is ok!
emtink12 25-02-2007, 18:25 i was the same as you i carried at the front both time and i had a boys i also had a lot of feeling sick but was never actually sick! good luck.
emtink12 12-02-2008, 14:15 SHOULD YOU OF HAD OR ARE YOU GOING TO HAVE A BOY OR GIRL??
Just for fun!!
Have a look at this. See what it says for your kids.
I have 2 boys. I looked on the scale for them and it dose say i should of had boys at that time, FREAKY!!!
So just for fun have a look and tell me what your kids should be and what they were..

:hihi:
Raychul69 12-02-2008, 15:43 Mines saying a little boy as well so it's quite spot on :)
Jabberwocky 12-02-2008, 15:45 It says we`re going to have a boy! I hope its right because there are too many mad females in my family!
emtink12 12-02-2008, 15:50 Says that this one is going to be a girl.
*Peaches* 12-02-2008, 15:53 Its been right 3 times for me
Raychul69 12-02-2008, 15:55 Ohhh Jabbers looks like the odds are leaning towards a mini Jabbers to even things out a little bit for ya :)
Jabberwocky 12-02-2008, 15:57 Ohhh Jabbers looks like the odds are leaning towards a mini Jabbers to even things out a little bit for ya :)
Well I did a backtrack and it was right with the girls...
Time (and a scan) will tell...
BobbyBunny 12-02-2008, 16:56 Says girl for me, but I won't find out until the middle of march :)
doesn't work for me (well only 50% accuracy) as both my children were conceived in the same month (same date too) and I have a boy and a girl with just short of a two year gap.
rubydazzler 12-02-2008, 17:02 That's bizarre - and spooky ....
I've tried it for everyone I could think of and it worked everytime! And it can't just be random, predicting so many girls and so many boys each time, as out of 6 concerptions only one was a boy!
Ooooo!
Ginger_Kitty 12-02-2008, 17:38 nope, said mine would be a girl... he's most definatly a boy :hihi:
rubydazzler 12-02-2008, 17:53 :Dnope, said mine would be a girl... he's most definatly a boy :hihi:
pffft! there's always one!
You did use conception and not birth, didn't you? *she posts hopefully, wanting the predictor to be right*
Ginger_Kitty 12-02-2008, 17:56 ohh yes :P
baby brain isn't that bad (yet ;) )
Katie1980 12-02-2008, 18:31 It says im having a boy and I am, so right for me!
it says my little girl should be a boy and this one inside me should be a girl, but hes a boy. do i have gender confused children??!
and jabber, i didn't know u were having another? i did wander away from sf for a few months but i'm back now thank goodness. just before i went i remember looking at pics of your new daughter!! whens the next one?
Birth-Peace 12-02-2008, 20:00 Mine says mine is a girl, so right there too
muckynees 13-02-2008, 10:14 A bit of a dilema.... the chart says that my existing kids should have been the opposite sex but the one one the way will be a male, whereas the sonographer at hospital says a girl!!!!!!
It was right for my first and it says this one will be a girl. I hope its right. It seems pretty accurate for a lot of people.
for those who have said it was the wrong way round...perhaps your daughters will turn out to be tomboys and vice versa lol!
Anyway - its just a bit o'fun :)
mbunting 13-02-2008, 15:36 It says I am having a girl and that is what the scan has said too.
I will have to wait and see but they were 99% sure when I had the 3d scan that it was a girlie.
xxsarahxx 13-02-2008, 19:10 its the opposite for me, its saying boy when i had a girl and girl when i had a boy.
but i always say they are mixed up lol.
my little boy is all emotional and likes to be really clean and tidy, my little girl is a scruff pot and likes playing in mud.
so in a way its kind of right...:hihi:
It says girls for when our girls were born. Spot on.
Spot on for both mine too!
I am 26 weeks pregnant tomorrow and the midwife has just checked the baby's heart rate it was 140bpm the last time it was done it was 146bpm.
Just wondered if anyone had any opinions about if you can sex the baby from the FHR?
One midwife said she believes above 140bpm id a girl and below is a boy.
My bump gave off a heart rate of 155, It was a girl and thats what the midwife predicted. (I wanted a girl so was glad)
ratsncats 25-03-2008, 14:00 It's meant to be that if on the higher side is a girl and lower side is a boy. 110-160bpm is considered the 'normal' range for a baseline therefore 140 would be on the 'girl side'.
lawson1082 25-03-2008, 18:49 i got told if it sounds like a train its a boy if it sounds like a galloping horse its a girl
Katie1980 25-03-2008, 19:45 My blue bumps heartrate has always been around 135bpm.
becky1004 03-04-2008, 08:10 mine was alway around 140 to 150 and it was a boy anything higher is a girl so Im told x
oooooooh, i've been told 140 or over its a girl!
with this one ive been around 140/145..........so a girl??
*Peaches* 03-04-2008, 12:31 156 in the hossy the other night and its a blue bump
BobbyBunny 04-04-2008, 17:52 Mines normally around 135 and shes a girl :)
deelightful3 08-04-2008, 14:45 it says my little girl should be a boy and this one inside me should be a girl, but hes a boy. do i have gender confused children??!
and jabber, i didn't know u were having another? i did wander away from sf for a few months but i'm back now thank goodness. just before i went i remember looking at pics of your new daughter!! whens the next one?
if you do then so do i,because the table got mine the wrong way round, said my 1st was a boy and 2nd a girl when infact its the other way round
My wife and I conceived using the Shettles method of gender determination. We wanted a boy (have a lovely girl already) so had intercourse on the two days of ovulation as indicated by the ClearBlue Coneception kit and by the change in the vaginal mucus (I really have a way with words!). My wife swears blind that this pregnancy feels different to when she had my daughter (my wife is in week 21); alot of hair growth on legs, craving for salty spicy foods, great complexion and hair, dry skin. Also the bump seems to be out front and low. Also when you look at my wife from behind, you would not be able to tell she is pregnant and the baby moves around a heck of a lot.
We had our 20 week scan last week and was told that it MAY be a girl because could not see the boy bits because the baby was in the breech position and crossed legged; although during the scan the scanner lady kept saying are 'they boy bits; hmmm can't be sure....'
We then got a private scan done eleswhere which was a bit of a joke, the screen was very poor could just about make out the head, legs etc...But this scanner lady was convinced that it was a girl, pointed out the girls labia as denoted by 3 lines; how she could point out I don't know seemed blurred to both of us?
Overall very happy to know my next kid is healthy and appears happy; just a bit frustrating re. is it a boy or girl? Anyone else had any similar expriences or can offer advice?
lauren84 24-06-2008, 11:23 My bump was just that - a bump! People said I was having a boy, I had picked out a boys name and couldn't think of a girls, the ring test said boy, the midwife said that the heartbeat was like a boys...according to tales. I did have a boy! Yey!
honeyb35 24-06-2008, 13:16 yeh i got told the heartbeat one lol, i remember both girls were fast heartbeats but i cant remember with my son (never found out the sexes of any of them)
the only thing I remember differing is I craved savoury comfort foods with the girls such as sunday roasts and bread and dripping, and more spicy stuff such as chinese food and sweets with the boy.
Jabbers - Dominic is a lovely name - its what I wanted to call my youngest...until it turned out to be female :hihi: and I'm 27 so still considered (fairly!) young!
Jabberwocky 24-06-2008, 13:26 Well we know for a fact that its a boy... god this thread was started when my OH was preggers with my one year old-- she was a girl but the latest and last one is going to be a boy and Im still trying to get her to agree to the name of Dominic...
Shes still saying no though.
Its going to be our last kid, my only son, so I DEMAND he be called what I want him to be called!
Ill win this one... Definately...
i have people telling me that if ur belly is up and in front and if u eat every 10 mins or so and belly is bigger than normal size ur expecting a boy just wondering as my belly is all those i describe above so very curious
honeyb35 07-03-2009, 19:05 Ha, my belly was always bigger than 'normal' size and I've had 2 girls and a boy! I was always told if the heartrate was over 140bpm it was a girl....no idea how true it was!
Cravings were a good indicator for me, roast dinners and other savory food with the girls, and spicy, or sweet stuff with the boy :)
i've been craving sweet stuff like sweet and sour cakes etc
honeyb35 07-03-2009, 19:34 i've been craving sweet stuff like sweet and sour cakes etc
well if it was me I'd be betting on a boy, but obviously everyones cravings are different!
Miss_S_83 07-03-2009, 20:25 Hi!
If I was you I wouldn't listen to any old wives tales, everybody and every baby is different, just ask at your 20wk scan (and don't be 100% sure then!).. if you want to find out you could get a private scan for about £55 (2D scan, Thornbury Hosp)....
I *think* I am having a girl as the lady at my scan couldn't see any boy bits.. but not convinced as heard too many stories of people having the opposite of what they are told! Only another 4-6wks til I find out for sure though :)
jellybellybean 08-03-2009, 11:47 Im 34wk pregnant with my first and don't know what i'm having!
My bump is all up front (can't tell i'm pregnant from behind) but the baby often lays in my back so the bump is squashy! I was really tired and felt sick in the first trimester but only actually was sick once. Heartbeat has varied between 140 and 155 and MW told me the old wives tale was anything over 120 was a girl.
Everyone thinks it's a boy though apart from my OH who thinks it's a girl! Oh well only 6-8weeks until we know for sure!
