Im sure youve all heared them, the home-spun methods of determining weather the pregnant mother is going to have a girl or a boy. The holding of the needle over the lump to decide on the sex of the baby, if it swings left to right its a boy, but if it spins its going to be a girl, things like that.

Anyone know of any other ones? Anyone actually found any of these methods to work?

I have one of those crystal things on a chain that I bought a long time ago, i bought it because it was shiny and im tempted to have a go at the bump with that.

My friend Sabrina (neither teenaged nor witchy) is of chinese extraction, and passed on a few good ones to me, one of them being that you're going to go in to labour if you can balance a rice bowl (not bowel, as i just wrote) on your belly. Very vague and applies every time i lie down.

The old wives used to say you carried boys at the front and girls all the way round.

In other words, if the bump is all at the front, it's a boy. If you get big all over, it's a girl!

It worked for me!

didn't work for me. i had a comedy 'balloon up t shirt' bump - entirely at the front - but it was a girl. at least she seems to be, anyway.

The wedding ring on a string - or any pendulum - is believed to work by dowsers.

I remember reading years ago that it was also used to sex day-old chickens, before you could easily tell the difference by looking. Mind you, I wouldn't know what to look for....

Ive seen a dowser in action and it DOES work, so there could be something in that.

I've tried dowsing and have had some success; not entirely sure how it does it but it seems to work. I'm not sure enough of my abilities to make money at it though! :)

Or to suggest to people that they should paint their nurseries blue... :)

As you will know, you either have the power, or you don't have it ... it's not something you can learn ...

Not sure how you could make money at it ... unless you were dowsing for black gold .... *eyes light up*

When I worked for the Water authority they hired Dowsers to locate underground springs and such so they obviously work. Fascinating stuff.

So theres definately something there then... You cant argue with that can you? My other half is also getting hairy and aggressive with it so Im thinking that shes carrying a boy.
Im patiently waiting for a scan thatll show the sex of the baby to see if im right.

The most ridiculous one I've heard is that if you conceived with your head pointing to the south it will be a girl, if you had your head pointing to the north it will be a boy!!!

The ring on a string thing worked for me, and the carrying position was not true. I carried all mine out front, boys and girls, nice and tidy, including my hugeous twins!!

Hey Jabbers don't find out mate! It's so much nicer to have the surprise!

PS Din't know you were expecting? I just thought it was your hunchback

Id love to have the luxury of waiting until the big day before discovering the sex of the baby, but Im afraid thats impossible.
Im just too damn impatient! :D I cant help being all excited can i???

Im hoping that its a boy because if it is I want to name him Dominic! Trouble is my other half flatly refuses to allow me to name him that so I need to know the sex NOW so that I can start nagging early.
Shes younger than me and she wants to give any child we have a "Modern" name, such as "tea-pot-tickle-trumpton-ville".

I wont have it i tell ya!!!!

My wife and I conceived using the Shettles method of gender determination. We wanted a boy (have a lovely girl already) so had intercourse on the two days of ovulation as indicated by the ClearBlue Coneception kit and by the change in the vaginal mucus (I really have a way with words!). My wife swears blind that this pregnancy feels different to when she had my daughter (my wife is in week 21); alot of hair growth on legs, craving for salty spicy foods, great complexion and hair, dry skin. Also the bump seems to be out front and low. Also when you look at my wife from behind, you would not be able to tell she is pregnant and the baby moves around a heck of a lot.

We had our 20 week scan last week and was told that it MAY be a girl because could not see the boy bits because the baby was in the breech position and crossed legged; although during the scan the scanner lady kept saying are 'they boy bits; hmmm can't be sure....'

We then got a private scan done eleswhere which was a bit of a joke, the screen was very poor could just about make out the head, legs etc...But this scanner lady was convinced that it was a girl, pointed out the girls labia as denoted by 3 lines; how she could point out I don't know seemed blurred to both of us?

Overall very happy to know my next kid is healthy and appears happy; just a bit frustrating re. is it a boy or girl? Anyone else had any similar expriences or can offer advice?

My bump was just that - a bump! People said I was having a boy, I had picked out a boys name and couldn't think of a girls, the ring test said boy, the midwife said that the heartbeat was like a boys...according to tales. I did have a boy! Yey!

yeh i got told the heartbeat one lol, i remember both girls were fast heartbeats but i cant remember with my son (never found out the sexes of any of them)
the only thing I remember differing is I craved savoury comfort foods with the girls such as sunday roasts and bread and dripping, and more spicy stuff such as chinese food and sweets with the boy.
Jabbers - Dominic is a lovely name - its what I wanted to call my youngest...until it turned out to be female :hihi: and I'm 27 so still considered (fairly!) young!

Well we know for a fact that its a boy... god this thread was started when my OH was preggers with my one year old-- she was a girl but the latest and last one is going to be a boy and Im still trying to get her to agree to the name of Dominic...

Shes still saying no though.

Its going to be our last kid, my only son, so I DEMAND he be called what I want him to be called!

Ill win this one... Definately...
