At about 1 o'clock today whilst my husband was out walking our 2 Yorkshire Terrier dogs on Frechville playing fields, a black and white Husky type dog attacked our dogs. The dog was off lead and was with a young lad of about 14. My husband says the dog came at them and completely ignored the lads attempts at calling it away. It clamped it's jaws around our 12 year old Yorkshire Terriers upper back and ragged him all over. The yound lad was apparently in tears and kept apologizing! My husband tried repeatedly to boot the dog off our dog, eventually it let go and got old of our 1 year old Yorkshire Terrier at which point a bloke turned up and called the dog off. My husband at this point was attending to our older dog who was having a fit. The bloke, yound lad and dog had all disappeared by the time my husband attended to our dogs.

Our dogs seem ok at the moment the little one fortunately seems to have suffered no physical injuries. Although he is a very nervous dog anyway (we rescued him from the RSPCA), so god only knows what sort of affect this will have on him. Our older dog has puncture wounds on his back and this has obviously frightened him to the point of having a fit. At the moment his seems ok, but I am absolutely furious that this dangerous dog is still out there. It is only a matter of time before it claims it's next victim. It could be a child next time.

Does anyone know of a dog like this in the S12 area ?

We had a dog that detested all other dogs and would have attacked them. It died when it was 17 and I was about 13. This dog never hurt a soul and was great with kids. We never let it go after other dogs and was on a lead if not in our garden.
So, I don't automatically think it should be put down. I'm sorry for the yorkshire terriers obviously but don't agree with the knee jerk reaction.

swordfish1 - This animal was not on a lead and was with a yound lad who could obviously not control it. At the very least it should have been on a lead and with a responsible adult who could control it. I have no sympathy for anyone who owns a dog like this. I am only grateful that my children weren't there at the time because I dread to think what might have happened. The fact that the owner made a quick escape just makes you think that it's not the first time it's happened and it probably won't be the last!

That is terrible. I really hope your dogs are ok? It sounds a bit like an akita to me.Ialso hope the young lad will be ok-it sounds like he was really scared and upset-the older man should have stopped.im disgusted that he did a runner in this way..
God,it must make you want to walk/drive around untill you see them again so that he can be reported-its making me feel like that just thinking about it.

Not disagreeing with you jo. It should be on a lead and not just looked after by a child. What I'm saying is I don't believe it should automatically be destroyed as in Becky's post. The owners should be punished and maybe even the dog taken off them if they are too irresponsible to look after it.
Hope your dogs are ok by the way.

It sounds a bit like an akita to me.

Now why because it looks like a husky and it attacked two innocent dogs does it have to be an Akita??? There are several breeds that look like that not to mention X breeds, Please dont assume that an Akita was to blame.
(unless it turns out to be one then i wil apologise)
I agree though the dog should have been under control.

I hope your two YT's are ok! I would take them to the vets as bite wounds can become infected very quickly. Also from a behaviour point of view, take them out where there are other dogs soon, they need to learn not all dogs are like this, you need to reduce the fear!

Good luck

Thats the sort of dog that gives dogs a bad name  Such dogs should be controlled properly, not by 14 year old kids :loopy:

Thats awful. I've seen young kids holding onto dogs that drag them them all over which is bad enough but off the lead it is ridiculous. I really hope your two doggys are ok and they quickly realise not all dogs will attack them

In my opinion -

The child is not to blame. The parents of the child who let him take out an aggressive dog are to blame. A child learns from his parents.

The dog is not to blame. It should be walked on a lead with a muzzle, in which case there may be no need for it to be destroyed.
Remember - there are no bad dogs, just bad owners. This dog may love people and therefore still have a quality of life even if it has to be walked on a lead and muzzle. However, the owners need to be ordered to do this and if they don't, the dog should be rehomed to suitable owners.

I'm so sorry to hear about your yorkies, as was said above, it's really important to get them out amongst dogs you know to be friendly so that they learn that not all dogs are like this (particularly the one year old).

If you walk in this area regularly I would advise taking a lemon juice spray out with you. It only has to be small but should this dog appear again, spraying lemon juice in it's face will be far more effective than kicking it. Please use sparingly!

I hope your dogs are ok and you can work through this.

Thats the sort of dog that gives dogs a bad name

It's the sort of owners that give dogs a bad name.

A dog is a dog, unable to reason, reflect on past behaviours or control inbred aggression.

If this dog had been wearing a muzzle and therefore not attacked, it wouldn't have given other dogs a bad name however, the dog can't decide whether it wears a muzzle!

No bad dogs - just bad owners

Thanks everyone for your comments. We are taking the dogs to the vets tomorrow, the little one seems ok. But the older one has several puncture wounds which might get infected. They are both very quiet at the moment and this has obviously shook them up. It could have been a lot worse. I don't know what I would have done in the same situation, but obviously my husband reacted in the only way he could in trying to get this animal off our dogs. I am just so angry. I'm going down to Moss Way tomorrow with my husband to make a report of the incident. It may turn out that they know of this dog anyway. In the mean time I am trying to track down the owner of this dog for everyones safety.

Good luck tracking down the owner.

When I said about lemon juice being better than kicking the dog. I can understand completely your husband's reaction! I wasn't condemning him for it!
It's the only thing you can do but unfortunately dogs react in one of two ways, they let go, or they clam down harder when kicked.

The juice is usually pretty fool-proof and most dogs will leave it, also as you're not reaching to the dog with one of your own limbs, you're less likely to get attacked.

I understand (and may be wrong) that lemon juice makes dogs eyes water, temporarily blinding them without causing them long term damage. Therefore it's a much safer way of deterring a dog because it can't see you or your dog properly to re-attack.

Don't worry if I was caught off guard and one of my dogs were getting ragged, I think I'd kick the other dog too!
