View Full Version : Sponsorship help required
Agent Orange 20-07-2004, 09:37 Hello all!!
On 24th September I will be embarking on a lengthy bike ride from Southport (west coast) to Hornsea (east coast) along the Trans Pennine Trail. I will be aiming to complete the almost 300 mile course in two days!! The reason for this is to hopefully raise £2000 for Cancer Research UK.
Anyway, here comes the hard part. I would be grateful to those that know me and to the rest of the kind people on this forum if you could find time to visit my sponsor page and donate your hard earned money to Cancer Research UK.

If you wish to sponsor me, but can't through the above link then please feel free to PM me and we can discuss other options.
Thank you!

Paypal (http://www.paypal.com) is a way of transferring money simply over the internet... Wel in theory it's supposed to be simple, but the first time I used it to pay for an Ebay purchase I found it annoyingly over-complicated because obviously I'm not a Yank, and the service is based in Yank-Land (USA).
Agent Orange 20-07-2004, 13:19 Come on, prove that us yorkshire folk aren't tight!!!!!
Lickable 20-07-2004, 13:44 sign up to paypal and i will send you a fiver!

Agent Orange 20-07-2004, 18:37 Come on.......... a pound from every individual on here would make just over 5 grand for cancer research!!!!!!
Agent Orange 21-07-2004, 07:57 Still waiting.......!! I'm not going to budge until at least one person on here sponsors me!!!:D

designbunny 22-07-2004, 08:33 I've sponsored you Martin, i hope you do really well.
I think other forum members should sponsor you too - how much do they really need that extra pint? Think of all those poor people who are suffering from cancer - its not the rarest thing you know, next time it could be you & wouldn't it be great if you didn't have to suffer, coz someone had previously raised enough money to find a cure?!
Ok, ok, rant over guys...but think about it!!!!
Agent Orange 22-07-2004, 09:31 Thanks, Amy!! Much appreciated!! :D
One down and only another 5000+ to persuade!! ;)
Agent Orange 22-07-2004, 14:29 Another donation in the pipeline. Thanks!! (You know who you are).
Please, please, please keep those donations coming in. Only received two so far, but more are desperately needed. Thank you!!!!!

Agent Orange 26-07-2004, 10:43 Just to put Cancer into perspective. Out of the 5728 Sheffield Forum users 1909 will develop cancer with 477 being terminal. I'll let you all come to your own conclusion about those figures!!!!

I agree and in a perfect world this would happen, but its not and it just happens we have a cash strapped health system that puts research funds on the back burner and it's down to people like me to help raise essential funds to keep the research going in the meantime. Thanks for your support anyway!!!
Agent Orange 28-07-2004, 13:34 Thanks to those who have sponsored me. I'm slowly getting to my £2000 target, but still need you kind people to donate some cash. Again, you can either do it via my site:
www.justgiving.com/martfund
or pm me and arrange an alternative method of getting the cash to me.
Thanks!

Come on forummers and sheffielders alike.
Everyone knows someone touched by cancer and Cancer Research UK (who are benefitting from Dicks Daring Dash) maintain a team of 3000 dedicated scientists working on treatment and cure.
So dig out your CCs and make a donation.
Please.
Agent Orange 04-08-2004, 15:41 Come on you generous lot! Only 5 forum members have been generous enough to sponsor me so far and I would appreciate it if more of you nice people would stick your hand in your pockets and part with some money for this good cause.

Every little bit helps.
If you have made a contribution, you can do your bit by punting this post to the top again.
If you think donating is hard, try cycling coast to coast!
Are you in training DickD?
Agent Orange 11-08-2004, 10:17 Yeah, phan. I'm running about 6 miles every morning and cycling for a couple of hours on most evenings. Finding it really hard at the moment, but I'm sure all the hard work will pay off when it comes to the coast to coast ride.
I might have landed myself a sponsorship deal with a website. Will fill you in on this when things have been finalised. Anyway, still a long way off my target even though I've raised another couple of hundred offline so I'd appreciate as much help as possible.
Thanks for the Pm.
Good Luck with the trek and keep us informed,
( any chance of doing a day by day log fom internet cafe's? )
Cheers Modesty.
Agent Orange 11-08-2004, 11:07 Modesty - I will be somewhat limited for time as I've only got two days to complete my journey so I won't have time to stop and find an internet cafe etc. What I do intend to do is write up a journal of my adventure and post it online for you all to view afterwards.
If you could borrow Phan's roaming web cam that would be really cool...
You could maybe take a cheapo digital camera though, and take some piccies on route.

DaBouncer 11-08-2004, 11:33 Sorry to sound like a tight arse but I have a direct debit to cancer research every month so I aint gonna sponsor you this time around.
However I will make a donation to another charity (none cancer related) of your choice for the completion of the course.
Just pop the name of an alternative on here or via PM and I'll make it so.

Ahhh missed the bit about doing it in two days.
Got your work cut out then.
Agent Orange 11-08-2004, 11:48 Nomme - got the digital camera sorted (well almost) so expect a link to appear on here with a few pics of a very sore DD.
DB - No probs. Glad you are contributing to a great cause and I'll not hold it against you that you won't be sponsoring me! ;) I can't think of another charity for you to contribute to on my behalf, but instead you could help by forwarding the link to my site to as many of your friends as possible.
DaBouncer 11-08-2004, 13:31 Consider it done
LittleWitch 11-08-2004, 13:51 ARGH!!!
Accept paypal, then i can sponsor you!
Agent Orange 11-08-2004, 13:54 Whats the difference between paying with paypal and paying with justgiving? Excuse me for my ignorance, but I've never used paypal before!!
LittleWitch 11-08-2004, 14:06 I can pay you with Paypal, as i have money in my PayPal account. I can't pay you with justGiving, as i don't have any money on my cards, as i am incredibly poor (no joke). :(

Just sent you plight to our plus magazine editor Martin.
It has a lot of hurdles to get through before it's agreed if it will or not go in. Also they wotn allow sponsorship requests in the story, they'll only cover the story as an after event.
However 90,000 people knowing what you've done for charity aint bad i'd say mate ;)
Agent Orange 11-08-2004, 14:21 Cheers DB. I guess you will give me a shout if all goes well for the plus thing?
LittleWitch - Still confused over Paypal. When you pay someone via the paypal account does that money then get transferred to the recipients account upon receipt?
LittleWitch 11-08-2004, 14:30 Yes.
PayPal works almost like a third person. So I give my money to that person, and they then give it to you. It's a very secure way of transfering money from banks account to bank account.
Agent Orange 11-08-2004, 14:42 Ok, I will try and set up an account now. Might not be up and running until tomorrow though as computers are real slow here and no doubt it will take until morning for confirmation email to filter through.
LittleWitch 11-08-2004, 15:06 Yay! thanks, DD.
I would expect more Forum members to cough up a quid or two now, as loads will no doubt have PayPal accounts with the odd few quid languishing around in them. :D
Agent Orange 11-08-2004, 15:14 All
I will have a Paypal account set up very shortly so if you want to sponsor me via Paypal then please give me a shout.
Thanks,
Mart.
Agent Orange 12-08-2004, 08:47 Anyone else got any ideas where I can get some extra sponsorship? I've organised a press release for Rotherham Star, hoping to get my story in my department's magazine, sent sponsor forms out to almost everyone I know and harrassed you guys. Still need to raise £1000 on top of what I've already raised before I will finally shut up ;) well, at least until I run the London marathon next year that is!!!
LittleWitch 12-08-2004, 09:20 COME ON PEOPLE!!!! DD's opened a PayPal account now, and I KNOW a lot of you will have those, so why don't you let him help you clear them out - FOR FREE!! And you benefit Cancer research at the same time!!
I KNOW you're not all heartless - even a quid will help. :D
And as an extra incentive - the 50th person off the Sheffield Forum to donate to DD's cause by PayPal will win a FREE gift basket off myself, courtesy of GlassWindow.co.uk. (hope you dont mind, DD, I just thought of it!!).
So COME ON!!!! DONATE!!! Do your good thing for the day, right here on the Forum, in the comfort of your own home!!
I've heard a good way is to have a word with the likes of Safeway etc. and ask if you can set up a stall in their foyer on a Saturday. I'm sure you must have seen similar operations yourself on occassion.
Another thing you can do is write to all of the suppliers your workplace buys stuff from.

No, I don't mind at all. To be honest I really think its a great idea and if it gets the sponsorship coming in then I'm totally up for it. Thanks for your help!!!!!!

Martin_s 13-08-2004, 01:27 Can you sort out an address (not your home one obviously) where you could receive postal donations in cheque form (perhaps through work?)
Also who to make the cheque out to.. (I'd suggest Cancer Research UK as the payee but I'm unsure what they call it).
Just that the net banking thing will lose you a percentage.. cheques will lose you a lot less.
Agent Orange 13-08-2004, 08:03 Ok, any postal donations (i.e. cheques) can be sent to

You can do this either through my justgiving site, or posting a cheque to the address I stated previously or you can donate through Paypal.
Thanks,

Hi there!....
...I am also raising funds at the moment (for a volunteer placement in India...but that's a whole other story!)....have you thought of holding a raffle? I'm sure that you could get some bottles donated by an Off Licence/supermarket (try more than one to get more bottles)...and this always makes a popular raffle prize...especially if champagne or spirits. Or holding a car boot sale...I've found that people are more than willing to clean out their cupboards on your behalf!...you could advertise these on your site too....Or there's the south yorkshire fundraising advice bureau who may be able to help...
Agent Orange 16-08-2004, 18:45 Cheers, Sarah!!
Freddy, I shall consider the valuable advice given and track down the yorkshire fundraising advice bureau for further advice. I like to take this opportunity to wish you luck in your fundraising, after all, it's not half hard work!!!!!!
Agent Orange 17-08-2004, 13:06 It's all gone a bit quiet so I better get this thread going again. So, who hasn't sponsored me yet? I know you are all eager to dig deep and part with a few quid for this cause especially as I will be getting a right numb ass, surely that's worth a few quid alone?!

Yeah come on everyone who hasn't put there hand in their pockets!
Its all for a worth while cause, and once old DD reaches his target amount we won't have tp listen to him begging any more
Beastieboy 17-08-2004, 18:39 It was nice to meet you today DD, well I managed to get to the blood donation centre and give a pint away after giving you the cheque.
Come on people of the Forum!!! Look under the chair, in old coat pockets and find a few quid to donate. As said earlier on in this thread some and most of you will know a person affected by cancer, or in my case know someone who has lost someone close to them and how it affects their lives.
Agent Orange 18-08-2004, 14:34 Cheers, Beastieboy!!!
I'm so sorry to hear that you lost someone close. I'm fortunate in the fact that it really hasn't effected my family, well, not in comparison to others that is. I lost a great uncle to lung cancer and a friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer of the bowel, but he has just come out of remission.
I'm sure others on here have also been personally effected by the big C at one point in their lives and if they have not then they have been extremely lucky as I do believe the stats are 1 in every 3 chance of developing cancer with 1 in every 4 being terminal.

Oh no it wasn't me who lost someone, but one of my good friends lost their mother and an old colleague of mine the same. However, I saw the effect it had on them especially on my friend.
How are you getting on with the target now?
Agent Orange 23-08-2004, 08:08 £571 so far, but still have stacks more to come in from family etc so I expect to have at least £1100 in a couple of weeks. Still, more is needed to reach my target and I'm gonna have a last go at publicising my event to hopefully get some more cash in the kitty!!!!
Agent Orange 24-08-2004, 07:51 Beastie - PM me with your work address so I can send you some posters to stick up.
Anyone else wanting posters to promote my event please give me a shout.

Hi again!
another suggestion is to ask local sports teams for signed merchandise. You can then sell/auction/raffle this off. I have done this myself, and this has proved popular (so far!)...just takes an e-mail! (I can pass names/mail addresses on to you if you'd like)
:help:....!
Beastieboy 26-08-2004, 20:17 Whoops:blush: Sorry I forgot. if you have some ready I will pick them up about 3pm if I can and put them up in the office.

Yeah, I would be grateful if you could forward me any info. Even if I don't use it for this round of fundraising then I'll use it to raise money for when I do the London Marathon in April. PM me with any info. Thank you!!

Only just got back in office after a very long weekend. If you still want some posters then I'll send you them when you get back in work.

Mixed bag of feelings to be honest. Excited that it's going to a great adventure, but also a little nervous as I'm scared of not being able to complete the course whether it's through injury or mechanical failure of my bike.
I've managed to raise another £14 today so I'm slowly getting closer to my target and hopefully this will inspire others, the ones who have not already sponsored me, to dig deep and contribute to a worthy cause.

Just thought you might PM Toby (BBC SHeffield) and Nicholarse (Hallam FM) and ask them if they would broadcast your appeal. You never know.

Agent Orange 20-09-2004, 10:53 Right all you people. Only 3 days to go before I start on my epic journey. Really looking forward to it and hope to raise some more money while I'm en route. Agent Orange 27-09-2004, 08:09 Hello all. Back after my long and very painful ride and only just got back the use of my legs  I managed to complete the journey in just under 3 days which was longer than I planned, but given the conditions i.e. cycling into a head wind I'm quite chuffed I finished in the time I did. Anyway, I'd like to thank everyone for their support (without which I wouldn't have been able to do this event) and their donations. I shall be passing on all monies to Cancer Research UK in a few weeks once I've finished collecting so I'll be sure to mention Sheffield Forum to them  Also, I will do another post here and let you all how much I raised when I've sorted everything!!!
Again, a big THANK YOU!!!!!!!

You could say that :D I'm now able to walk and sit comfortably again so it shouldn't be too long before I get on the saddle again. I must be crazy!!!
Oh, I'm in the office today so if you are about then I get you the sponsorship money.
:help:
Hi there - welcome back and WELL DONE!!
I've just put a little something in the pot, so I hope that helps...
...you could try a unicycle next year  !!!
alchresearch 01-10-2004, 11:59 Well done! Did you make a diary on the way, photos and such?
Agent Orange 04-10-2004, 10:52 Cheers Freddy and Alch.
I haven't done a diary, but have a few pics I will post on internet in the next few weeks. Again, thanks to everyone that's supported me!!!!
Agent Orange 13-12-2004, 12:12 Better late than never, but now I've got most of the collecting out of the way I thought it would only be polite for me to thank everyone on this site that has helped and supported me with this event. I'm still finding it difficult to get people to pay up, but the total donations made so far add up to £924.51. I shall be sending a cheque for the above amount to Cancer Research UK tomorrow and in that will give Sheffield Forum a big mention. Again, thanks for the support and I hope you are all just as generous when I plan my next big event, which I hope, should be some time in 2005.
Thanks!!!!
