View Full Version : SYP Road Crime Unit - Elite Police Crimefighters tallpaul 09-09-2006, 15:04 http://www.southyorks.police.uk/impact.php Geoff 09-09-2006, 15:27 Interesting information. There is a traffic cops style show which I've seen that follows a specialist traffic/road crime force down in Thames Valley (I think?). They have some pretty neat kit in their cars and they seem to work very well as a proper unit, rather than just 3-4 cars driving around! jediwarrior 09-09-2006, 15:31 anyone got any pics of syp`s new cars Geoff 09-09-2006, 15:34 Google image search is your friend, here is what they will be similar to: http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&q=police%20subaru&sa=N&tab=wi As an example. max 09-09-2006, 15:45 How fast would you have to be going to be not worried by seeing this baby in your rear view mirror? Pursuit vehicle (http://www.carairo.com/catalog/images/nypol.jpg) 2, maybe 3 miles per hour? Geoff 09-09-2006, 15:51 Under Operation Takeaway, South Yorkshire Police’s initiative to take uninsured vehicles off the county’s roads, over 1600 vehicles have been seized so far this year. That's an amazing number of vehicles for just over 8 months! I still don't understand why they crush them rather than sell them at auction - I'm referring to the ones of value rather than the rust buckets! saxon51 09-09-2006, 17:18 ;) You certainly did some research there tallpaul mate. malton_s5 09-09-2006, 22:51 Under Operation Takeaway, South Yorkshire Police’s initiative to take uninsured vehicles off the county’s roads, over 1600 vehicles have been seized so far this year. Each police force operates in different ways..to serve the individual communities. Presumably the law was passed specifically allowing for vehicles to be crushed, but didn't mention confiscating and selling them. saxon51 10-09-2006, 10:29 thanks mate.. You know me....I do like my law enforcement discussions.... And rightly so. Law enforcement discussions are 'crucial' in this day and age. saxon51 10-09-2006, 10:31 My best guess for that would be the legality of it. Presumably the law was passed specifically allowing for vehicles to be crushed, but didn't mention confiscating and selling them. And it doesn't say anything about taking the driver out prior to the crushing process either. Which is nice. :) tallpaul 10-09-2006, 16:30 Very few are in fact 'crushed'....often is the very old that are crushed for scrap value.. Any vehicle that has monetary worth will be sold to recoup the costs of recovery... That is all done by the recovery agent and not the police. redrobbo 10-09-2006, 17:00 It would appear that the unit that operates in south yorkshire does so in a 'pack'...ie: 3,4 or even 5 cars work an area...so that if a pursuit starts or an officer needs assistance....back up is seconds or minutes at the most away... It's actually more than that tallpaul. The elite unit operates in conjuction with the local Safer Neighbourhood Area (SNA) Policing Team. Meg Munn MP and myself recently spent a day with them in my own SNA Team's area, an account of which can be found on this thread..... http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=132881&highlight=Munn The two teams combine to provide a massively effective crime squad, who find criminals and arrest them on the spot. I witnessed several arrests myself, including a guy on licence from prison who was driving whilst banned - he was soon on his way back to gaol. At least one stolen vehicle was recovered on this occasion and the guys who were driving the stolen vehicle were soon under arrest. I saw numerous untaxed vehicles, including some without an MOT, impounded. The owners will have to fork out £105 each day a car is impounded to get their vehicle back. The police also operate from unmarked vehicles, and there is also back-up motorbike assistance occuring throughout an operation. Several times the police car I was in was called upon to provide assistance, and a pincer operation with several other police cars was performed extremely effectively to corner a car that was attempting a getaway. No-one who thought they could just speed up and drive off got away. I spent 8 hours with the two teams, and can commend the police for a brilliant operation. The teams then moved onto another area the next day. The elite road unit covers all of South Yorkshire, and as I said, works with each local SNA when they conduct their operations. tallpaul 11-09-2006, 01:39 Thats great news RedRobbo... Thanks for the update... :) never wrong 11-09-2006, 02:36 to red robbo £105 and £12 a day not £105 a day tallpaul 11-09-2006, 03:40 Too many people suffer for these non-insured drivers... These powers are excellent. dan_999uk 11-09-2006, 13:25 There were bundles of traffic cars in Sheffield last night - lying in wait in various strategic locations... Scrutineer 11-09-2006, 15:49 The ANPR team are officers who have joined that newly formed unit, and technically are 'traffic cops' as they fall under the Road Policing Unit based at the Ops Complex. tallpaul 11-09-2006, 16:41 This sort of team is exactly what the good people of South Yorkshire need in the fight against crime... |
