What a day. I'm shattered... British motorways are getting worse, so stressful. Lorry drivers overtaking constantly, vectra reps going at near enough 100 mph on fast lane, accidents, delays.. We then get into Liverpool, and it takes aaaaaages to get into the city centre, Dale street car park is what we're looking for. What do I do- i end up in the birkenhead tunnel... That'll be £1.30 for the pleasure, thanks bloody thanks!!
Turn back into tunnel- get into dale street car park. Had a nice few hours, nice city, nice docks. Then the nightmare journey home.
Took 3 and a half hours, accidents, accidents and more bloody accidents. The standards of driving are appaling and the motorways are jam packed. It just cannot continue like this. I'm exhausted, what a day!!

If you set off at rush hour and return at rush hour what do you expect. Next time, plan your journey so not to coincide with rush hour traffic, and buy an A to Z of Liverpool to find Dale Street.

Sorry about the rant but just come off a thread discussing the alleged bad driving of elderly people, so I’ve got to frustrate my anger somewhere and from what you’ve said you must be elderly and near enough blind. The tunnel signs are MASSIVE! — and you missed ’em!

Calmed down now, and glad you enjoyed the remainder of you day. Liverpool is a very nice city.

I think the Birkenhead tunnel is quite easy to accidentally turn into. I was actually underneath the road tunnel on a tour last night, it was soooo cool!

If you like the docks you should have had a look at the ones in Birkenhead, there are some great old buildings, like the one below:

I hate travelling with anyone in a car now, try and always take the train if possible - so much nicer and (almost always) stress free.

It’s a darned sight easier NOT to turn into!

Was this a passport visit?

More than likely — but think of the fun you’re missing. No accidental turning into one of Liverpool’s tunnels and having to pay out money for something you didn’t want, and no treasure hunt for its Dale Street car park! Life’s for living and you aint getting any!

Just for interest, some years ago The Dalesman magazine carried an advertisement for ‘Yorkshire Passports’. Don’t know how much money the makers made out of it, but I thought that is was a good fun idea.

I'm not so sure. Come down the hill to that roundabout. Get accidentally caught in the inside lane (easily done as they're not marked where they go to until it's too late) and then you're at the roundabout - a very busy roundabout. You either have to wait until it's clear or someone lets you in (yeah, right that happens a lot in Liverpool), forcibly cut someone up, or go into the tunnel. I saw it twice last night for myself at 4pm.

You could be right, I suppose. I worked quite a while in Liverpool, which is probably why I never have any difficulties.

Thank you!! It's exactly what happened, it was busy, first time in liverpool, you've got to check road markings, traffic etc... By that time it was too late...

Of course, the biggest problem for sheffielders is that they aren't used to drivers in other cities being accomodating

If you're in the wrong lane, you hold the whole world up, stick your indicator on, and wait to be let out..... except if you're in Sheffield :D

[QUOTE=Sony]What a day. I'm shattered... British motorways are getting worse, so stressful. Lorry drivers overtaking constantly, etc

And why should'nt they?
Lorries are limited to 56mph top speed. It's more a case of people like you dawdling along and forcing us out into the 2nd lane to get past.
British motorways are excellent and constantly improving, just keep off them during rush hours.

You might consider taking the Institute of Advanced Motorists course, improving your driving skills would make the experience a lot more relaxed.:)

  You can only get away with this in this country! In france you have to stick to the slow lane. I hate lorry drivers with a passion, indicating at the last minute forcing me to brake like i don't know what. YOU need to improve your driving skills not the other way round!!

Maybe its me, but the amount of lorries I've seen recently 'racing' each other only for the overtaking lorry to have to fall back after litterally what must be 5 minutes because they have no speed advantage is huge. I dont recall seeing that many less lorries in the past, but never have I seen the number of failed overtaking manouvers as recently.

Why doesnt the lorry in front just ease off the gass when another behind is trying to overtake? :loopy:

Exactly!!!! I tend to think they've been on the road for hours and just want to kill time by racing and annoying one another.

In further defence of Sony, I have lived in Liverpool for 11 years and on one memorable occasion was driving back from the unfamiliar north of the city to my home in the south. Suddenly I realised I was in a lane heading into one of the tunnels and there was nowt I could do about it.

My wife was telling me to explain my situation to the guys collecting the tolls, but I felt such a berk, I'm afraid I just paid up, turned round, and headed back.

Mind you, the view of Liverpool from Birkenhead is jaw-dropping. So if it happens again, you may as well hop out of the car and have a look!
