having lived on pit lane behind the mansfield road station for 20 years i think they are noisy buggers waking me up in the middle of the night...also i think they are bullies coz i used to get a clip for climbing up the tower(try doing that today without losing your job)..to be honest though thought they were top blokes..used to play volley ball with them during the school hols

I think firemen are ok if they do their job properly and don't spend all them time either on strike or getting drunk and posting on forums!

Some of the firemen (and some members of the constabulary) I've seen lately really need to join Weight Watchers or get some serious excersize...sliding down a pole a couple of times a day won't get the pounds off :D

Not a general critisism though....they do a great job.

£26,000 a year, four days off, two days to sleep and they still strike on Bon Fire night.

never thinks he gets paid enough but after this mornings news, I know I wouldn't want a job where you don't know if you're coming back or not.

I'm glad we've got them and any move to undermine them to save money is a backward step in a supposedly forward thinking country. You can't just get anyone to be firefighters.. as we will find out in the coming years. Private firefighting companies are just around the corner I reckon.

Hey...don't knock steam engine crews !! :(

To be an engine driver you had to start at the bottom, cleaning out fireboxes and lighting fires, getting steam up etc The only way to the top in that job was to serve your time , inluding being a fireman, whatever your intellect - and of course you had to pass all the exams, memorise all the routes, points and signals along them.

Bit more to it than opening a cock and spraying water all over the place :D

Dunno about Firemen. They seem very good at their jobs. Most of the time they're near my house putting out fires on abandoned cars! :D

They seem to be on the pull and awful lot though. I always see them driving through the city grinning out the windows of the firetruck. Ah well, I would too if I was a firefighter!!

considering they are on 4 days worth of 12 -14 hour shifts, broken sleep cos of shouts when they do nights, save lives on a regular basis and STILL only get paid as much per year as the average London investment banker gets for a small bonus....I think they're ok. Arrogant *******, though.

I couldnt do the job, not for any money

But I am extremely glad that there are men and women out there that are prepared to do it in my place

And I dont think they get anything like enough money

I dont think we should be going down the road of the politics of envy.

It isnt about whether they get more or less than me (assuming I had a job, which just now I dont) it is about the fact that they potentially put their lives on the line every day they go to work.

I dont think you can say that about any other job, not that I can think of, certainly not on a daily basis anyway

If my house was on fire, or my car, or I was in a road accident and needed cutting out, I would be overjoyed to see the fire service turn up

- and if they are a bit of a magnet for suggestible young ladies, then good for them, there has to be some perks surely?

maybe we can catch when i am over in sheffield so i can buy you that ale seeing how u already have first place in the bag for the fastest extrication . a event i never heard of before ( the fastest extracation).
however once you have ensured victory i will be the first to by you a winning Brew.
to the others its funny how its easy to say , short shifts get paid lots . deal with tradgedies every day , handle spilt chemicals that no other people will touch. see peoples lives torn apart. not once but say if you put in a lifetime into the service thousands of scenes and faces and feelings to put to rest.

so why not let em pose in the fire trucks

why not let have a few drinks to let of steam and put the skeletons to bed. ( u do dont you)

next time you see them down the pub , buy them a beer , u might be surprised the probaly will by you one back.

So now and then you see a fireman "Doing Nothing", well your first thought should be that your house isn't on fire, why do people need to see firemen risking their lives to earn their pay.

Might surprise some people too that firemen also like to look at girls !

I think they might be still at their jobs, just a little bit fatter and older. Lol btw my dad's a fireman (not an active fireman any more, office stuff- he's 52)- hope he doesn't read this!
