View Full Version : Ideas about Blue Bins
Hi, I'm doing a TV program about Blue Bins in Sheffield. The blue bins scheme was started on July 24th last year. Many people believe that it would help the residents and the whole city to do recycling, but actually, is it really doing well for the city? The government now is more concerned about the balance of cost and recycling. What's your views and ideas towards Blue Bins and recycling? (Anyone of you have any good or bad experience of using Blue bins can contact me. )You can say whatever you want. If you are interested in stating your views on this, please contact me 07709365597.

They can make a right mess if people put them out when it's windy
You might want to search for Blue Bins on the forum - we've talked about them loads of times before. My theory is that it doesn't matter what colour bin you put your rubbish in, Onex still take it all to the Bernard Road Incinerator.
Thank you for your reply. Yeah, I have seen loads of comments, and that's why I want to get some TV interviews with people who have their point of view on this. Would you like to join?
Whatever your ideas would be towards the Blue Bins and recycling, just talk.

If want to do some investigative journalism you could follow one of the Onyx collection wagons for a day and find out just what happens to all our waste paper etc.
yeah, I have done that, and have talked with David Bird, the head of waste management in City Council and will interview Bernard Little. I also interviewed Diane Leek. I have talked with a manager in Onyx. Thank you for your suggestion.
I wanna get some special views from the residents. If I just knocked the doors and ask questions or interview people in street, they propably wouldn't give interesting views.
but i'm also doing the vox pop.

Well good luck with it, but it might prove difficult. Slagging Onyx off could get a householder blacklisted.
BTW...what does happen to all the waste paper ?
This is my final project of the study. It is kind of very short interview, no harm at all. I won't put your name or won't show the faces. Another classmate is doing the topic of anti-social behavior, and he will cover those guys' faces in the program. But it seems no need to cover residents' faces in my program. People can say whatever they think. Don't you think so? The chairman of the green party also can blame on the scheme that it is not as effective as people thought or he even think it is kind of waste. No need to worry about these things.
Well in theory it's a good idea, but in practise, the bin design is not good and they easily blow over so the waste paper ends up scattered down the street.
A weekly box/bag scheme would be better.
Would you guys like to see me? please call me 07709365597. It would be interesting to have all these comments. I have got some comments in the street, but people were not fully prepared to say anything true. Maybe they think it is not practical, but most of them say," o, it's good..." like this. Will you? Thank you...
designbunny 19-07-2004, 11:55 we have been in our house in meersbrook for 2 months and our blue bin has still not bin (been) emptied!
When the heck do the council come round??
anna_scott 19-07-2004, 12:39 I would be happy to say something about blue bins. I am doing research into use of blue bins so have lots ot say. You can email me ecp02aks@sheffield.ac.uk
As a mum of two with a double pushchair the blue bins drive me mad! It's not their existence (I agree with recycling..) - it's the way they are just carelessly thrown back any old how after oynx have emptied them. I appreciate they will have time targets and they are hard pushed to meet them but a little consideration please? I find myself having to walk on (busy) roads on the days the bins are emptied as I can't get past them.
bulldog D 08-08-2004, 01:07 Blue bins are wonderful!
especially if your a wednesdayite, get some 2" white tape and adhere it vertically down the sides of your bin equally spaced.
Result
Instant Wednesday bin!
If you want to be really posh get your house numbers done in white vinyl and stick them on.
There are many thoughts about blue bins here :

There is even a Rotherham United banner made from bins :

I don't use mine, nor the green one. I dont make much rubbish, and so its way too much hassle. Bins stay in my garage. It's better to see my waste go to the incinerator rather than recycled anyhow (and as some people are discovering... recycling doesnt work financially in the first place, causing huge backlogs. It happened in Germany and will happen here)
They make smashing washing baskets.
DeathAxe 08-08-2004, 23:36 The reason for the bins is that the council are facing fines for the rubish dumps.
as for onix.... we have had alot of troble with them. Its bad enough getting them to empty the normal bins, never mind the blue ones. They never come on time and they miss even coming down here.
There is talk of other bins too, but that would clutter up our drive way.
SaxonLeigh 09-08-2004, 14:36 i cant really comment on the blue bin thing, unfortunatley (or fortunatley whichever way you look at it) they took ours off from the residents at the top of my street because they said we were abusing them, absolutle B****X!
easyrider 09-08-2004, 15:09 the waste paper collected is recycled, apparently in sheffield only 1% is not recycled due to contamination
so conspiracy theorists who think it goes to the incinerator will be disappointed
purplepippa 09-08-2004, 16:15 We still don't have blue bins where I live :(
I have the same problem with the bin it usely in the road when I get home from work.
The problem is the size of the waggon they keep hiting a tree close by.The way things are going I dont think it will be alive next year.
