I am very interested in Japanese swords and was wondering if anyone in sheffield collected samurai swords. I've managed to find a couple but they aren't exactly good examples. Anyone got any advice on buying? I've seen lots on EBay that claim to be from China but I'm a bit dubious about their low price. I know Sheffield is a massive steel producer and someone out there must be interested in the art of ancient steel production that went into these beautiful swords.

Thanks Matt

Hi there Matt

A real genuine samurai sword can cost anything in the region or £10,000 to £50,000, some fetching alot more, just thought you should be aware!

You can purchase ornamental swords at>

My ex-boyfriend in Wigan was a metalsmith who made modern day reproduction of japanese swords.

He charged between £400 to £1000 (ten years ago) and these were forged blades and folded with the hardened edge.

So a reproduction might be easier on the pocket than an original.

Also where are many arms fairs around the country which sell modern and antique swords. They are interesting to wander about and maybe you can pick up a book or two on japanese swords.

Good Luck

Most of the swords on sale today are made in China and America but you can still pick up some genuine swords.

All officers in the Japanese services in the WW2 were presented with a sword.

These can be picked up at any Arms fair for a reasonable price.

The furniture of the these swords may leave a lot to be desired but the blades are genuine.

The furniture can soon be replaced or made to suit.

I hope these notes help you.
