Is it S8 or is it further north? Its whopping! From the centre of Sheffield, all eye's south by my reckoning.

EDIT: Possibly north as per recent reports

It's from the general direction of where the old Winn Gardens tower block was, maybe a bit to the left!

Dying down now, not so black. Don't know where it's from tho, maybe Beeley Woods way.

Spoke to soon, thick black again. Good view from my upstairs window!

It's definately Union Carbide.

The first started around 7pm and by 7:45 the largest section was completely destroyed. We stood and watched the huge roof sections collapse.

2/3 quite large explosions went off too.

Seems rather fishy after the Fletchers fire and now this.

:suspect:

If it's the carbide building will there not be concerns about the chemical hazard?? presuming that theres still loads of redundant chemicals laying around the place??

Fire crews battle warehouse blaze
About 40 firefighters are tackling a major fire at a warehouse in Sheffield.
The warehouse, on Claywheels Lane, at Wadsley Bridge, is thought to contain paper products including tissue and toilet paper, police said.

People living nearby have been advised to keep their doors and windows closed overnight as a precaution.

The building, which was once a Union Carbide chemical plant, was one of several sites earmarked by Sheffield Council for possible redevelopment.

A police spokesman said the cause of the fire was not yet known.

The streets of Grenoside are littered with burnt paper !! The burnt paper raining down at about 7.15 is what alerted us to the fire.

I've also deleted a comment that was potentially libellous, so let's not have any of those either please.

Thanks.

I can guess what the potentially libellous comment was! The first thought that enters many heads when there’s a fire.

What exciting lives you lead in Sheffield! And just before Emmerdale too! In case you missed it, nothing much happened — again! And if you also missed EastEnders it ended with Billy’s new wife giving birth and mentioning the fact that her baby was ‘perfect’ — which means it won’t be, but she doesn’t know that yet. I’ve a feeling that her life with her new daughter is going to be an interesting story with the usual “if you’ve been affected by this story-line etc.” at the end of each forthcoming episode.

The Star (http://www.sheffieldtoday.co.uk/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=58&ArticleID=1744926) have caught up quite quickly :)

Warehouse destroyed in inferno

MORE than 40 firefighters from across South Yorkshire tackled a huge blaze at a Sheffield warehouse last night after the building went up in flames.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing three loud explosions as a huge plume of thick black smoke billowed from the former Union Carbide Factory on Claywheels Lane, Wadsley Bridge.

A full investigation into the cause of the blaze was continuing this morning - and arson is not being ruled out. The warehouse is less than half a mile from Fletchers bakery which was ravaged by a huge fire in July. Flames leapt high into the air and could be seen licking at the building from city centre offices three miles away.

At its height the blaze was tackled by eight fire crews from stations in Sheffield and Rotherham.

Tony Meade, from Central Fire Station, who was in charge of tackling the flames, said "When crews arrived explosions were heard and roller shutter doors had bowed out caused by cylinders exploding against them.

"There was a problem with asbestos in the roof and walls because of the age of the building. The initial clouds of smoke could have caused health problems for local residents but fortunately by the time they reached nearby homes, the clouds had dispersed.

Steve Pashley, from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "When we arrived it was well alight and residents had reported hearing loud explosions coming from the building. We believe that there may have been acetylene cylinders inside."

Mr Pashley said fire crews tackled the blaze from the outside the building and had not entered the warehouse.
Two pumps were still at the scene this morning monitoring the smouldering building

:o my son! Nah he's far to sensible. Claywheels lane is an area of dereliction and uncannily enough in my letter of support for the project to develop it I said that to say no would resign the site to a further 20yrs of dereliction including burnt out cars ect!

Okay so I wasn't thinking as big as a huge factory fire but thats what happens when a huge industrial wasteland is left to its own devices. There have been fires on that site regularly, though not to the extent of yesterday.

Knock it down and go with the development plans, before we have another warning from the fire brigade to stay in our homes. Two totally un related incidents on the same industrial estate in a couple of months. I'd take some nice little houses any day.
