I have just re-hung the curtains after decorating and of course there were some hooks missing. So, I went to the bag of curtain hooks that I have accumulated over 22 years of home ownership and sure enough there was more than enough of just the right size hooks. Now this bag contains not just hooks but also the dangly bits into which they hook and also an assortment of sticky out things to push the rail over a protruding window-sill. There were also screwy things for stopping the curtain from coming off the end of the track and bits of plastic sleeves for connecting various sizes of track.

There was a carrier bag full of this stuff!

Now, my point is, I don't remember ever getting to the situation where I had enough curtain bits to warrant a whole carrier bag. I don't remember thinking 'I'll separate out the curtainy things from the drilly things and the gardening things and the things that may be useful sometime but I'm not going to throw it out now'. I don't remember the first time I was missing a curtainy thing and thinking 'I'll look in the carrier bag where I keep these things'. It was just there and now I take if for granted. Find a curtainy thing, need a curtainy thing? The carrier bag, that's where I'll find/put it.

I thought you might like to share this and if you've the equivalent thingy bag how did you start and when did you first recognise it for what is was?

Nice one Maxt.

For me its Screws, every time I do a DIY job I buy some screws.

I now have thousands of the dam things, I have now decided to put them all in a dedicated tool box. The trouble is everytime I need one I can never find the right size, so I go and buy another box.

What should I do???

I share both your problems, only Maxts problem is to many curtainy things, i don't have enough of them so finish up buying some in.
I own 7 bicycles and parts don't last for ever and in stead of throwing my worn out bits i keep them in my loft which has been converted to house my precious bikes and gym.
I just have'nt got the heart to throw them out.

Lighters with no gas and pens with no ink... I don't know why they dont get chucked, but when I need a pen or a lighter I always end up trying at least 6 before I find one that works!

I live in a three bedroomed house alone and there are so many bags of differrent things I have accumulated over the years it is unbelievable..there are woodscrews, steel screws, drills, nuts and bolts, carrier bags, paper bags, steel bars, electric drills, a two wheel gringing machine on a stand.

I have two garden huts full of steel drawers full of bloks of wood, rawplugs, spanners, hacksaws, woodsaws, jemmys, garden tools, there is strip lighting, connection for a water feature, large sack barrow, wheel barrow, nails, dozens of various sizes, pipe brackets, steel brackets, washing machine connectors, hose pipe and reel, chair , heater, six full calor gas bottles, drill stand, circular saw.

In my loft, I have enough bedding and furniture to furnish another three bedroomed house, television ariel, numerous lights, beer barrels, aquarol warer carrier that I used for my caravette in the cold days still in perfect condition which holds six gallon of drinking water, latex foam beds of every shape and size, my home is a second hand mecca of goods of nightmare proportions.

ANY OFFERS???

I mainly collect Videogames..
I have a nice stash of around 500 all together that I have built up over the last few years.

I used to also collect Point Horror books, and bought all of them second hand, below £1 each for them at Car Boots and such, and I ended up with about 30 of the damn things, and I've only read 2 of them.

I made him clear out the cellar last year, he had a pnuematic hammer down there (spelling?) and old bike and even the sign that used to be on our street before they changed the name!!!

He also has a LARGE collection of computer software and the cupboard under the attic stairs is like a computer graveyard!!!

Come on, own up . . you dont have to be an anorak to be a collector of anything these days - in fact theres quite alot of money in most things collectable nowadays!

When I was about 12 I collected funny erasers . . remember having loads, a toilet shaped one got me into some trouble at school once too ( thats another story ). I was in the Stamp Bug Club for about 2 years and then had a phase of collecting video's . . .My biggest collection was of comics, I had around 1500 at one point in my cellar - some real classics which my dad burnt!!!!! thinking it was rubbish one year!

The only things I tend to collect now are coppers for my large sweet jar at home.

So, what do you collect and why?

Warner Bros Daffy ducks I have various ones from tiny ones from McDonald's to a large 3foot pot one. Its strange how hard it is to find them but with the prices they charge on ebay for them I should be a millionaire in around another 1000 years lmao :loopy: :gag: :hihi: :hihi:

Old books about amateur radio and electronics.

I have a collection ranging from about 1900 to 1972 - after that I regard them as 'relatively modern' and they aren't of as much interest.

I have quite an interesting book written for the Army for use as a training manual in WW1, and a set of similar books developed for training Naval Ratings for WW2. There's an edition of a book which is printed on thin paper under the wartime paper rationing rules, and a few other gems.

I love the drawings and the general style of writing - and there are still useful technical principles to be gained from the books, even a century after the event.

I'm suprised they burnt, mine would be damp as hell if i kept them in the cellar. Now if he got his hands on mine kept in a humdity controlled enviroment, they would make good fuel.

so you probably would love all the stuff I got my ex then ;) I got her quite a lot of Hello Kitty and Bad Batz Maru stuff whilst we was dating... I even got her some stuff for Xmas even though were now only friends... these little Badtz Maru figures like 12 of them... imported from Hong Kong I think, not sure why Hong Kong when its japanese... hmm... meh well, the worlds a funny old place ;)

I used to collect Warhammer models, sad but true... but I was more bothered about painting them than playing the games, I really used to love painting, in fact, I still do, but I rarely get the time to draw/paint these days, always end up doing something else...

currently I'm collecting guitars, but its expensive, at the moment I have two and a half :( (half cus I'm building one and its not done... lol)

but I've got my eye on buying my aunts vintage '63 Hofner Committee... and I'm also after a Gretsch White Falcon... they're only £2000+, I'm sure I'll have that cash spare in no time *cough*

As a kid I collected carrier bags!! I had them from all over the world!! Very very sad!!

As an adult, I collect old Ladybird books and have well over 300. I also have a huge collection of kids TV books such as Trumpton, Camberwick Green, Larry the Lamb, Skippy, Dr Who etc etc as well as old pop annuals and a huge pile of Smash Hits from the 80's!!

I have a collection of assorted junk such as unopened packets of 1950's and 1960's stockings, school flash cards (very un-PC!!) from the 1950's/60's showing children of the world and jobs we do, boxed party games from the 60's etc etc. It was usually stuff that no-one wanted at the end of a jumble sale or car boot but I found interesting!!

I used to as well - cannot even think about selling them on though I rarely listen to them due to having a crackpot neighbour who won't even let you pass wind. I've got loads of old dance 12"ers from 1988-1994 period plus 80s stuff, sci-fi film soundtracks, Peel Sessions, all kinds of weird stuff.

I've always collected books and my house is like a ruddy library - multiple copies of some if I find nice/rare editions - we have um....about 25 different editions of Lord of the Rings, same for The Hobbit. And almost every critical or fan book ever written on Tolkien. Also I collect action figures! Childish but great fun - and I always take 'em OUT of the box *sees fan boys shuddering* :D And nice postcards from museums and galleries.

They take a bit of time to grasp that Calvin is approx 5/6 years old and never gets any older and that Hobbes is his stuffed tiger who comes to life (in Calvin's mind).

I bought my first one on a whim in the states 15 years ago, and just could not put it down. Very quickly got the rest of the collection and each new book per year. Very, very funny and also very poignant.

Hi Rozee,

Would you have so much trouble letting go of stuff if it were going to be used by someone else? I don't throw away anything much at all, most stuff goes into a charity bag and gets dropped off at the shop once per week or so. Anything larger I post on Freecycle http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Sheffield-FreeCycle/ and if anyone can use it they come and pick it up.

I have cleared loads out and I am really proud of myself :) Mind you, it doesn't stop me coming home with bagfuls every week from car boot sales ;)

What do I collect? Books mostly, must be abput 5,000 in the house now, including a sizeable number of pre-1800 stuff, some going back as far as the early 1500s.

However, I am also fond of old 78 records, so they've mounted up to about 500, from Edwardian onwards (have an old gramophone and several record players to listen to them).

Other oddities include a small collection of bells--cattle bells, camel bells etc--and a collection of pipes from the days when I used to smoke--clays, briars, meerschaums, corn-cob, cherrywood and ceramic. Maybe I'll have to ebay that lot one day. Also a few old coins (some medieval) that I've picked up here and there. I'm also very fond of pocket watches (I wear one when formally dressed) and so there are about 40 of those stashed away. More ebay fodder sometime, I suppose. Will have to downsize eventually!

However, I too am a hoarder of all sorts of bits and pieces that "may come in handy one day", so there is a lot of junk about as well!

Nothing! I've often wished I could have a nice collection of something, but I get bored and get rid..
I did used to be a bit of a hoarder until a surveyor told me that modern lofts weren't like the old attics, and it's a wonder that I still had ceilings.. lol! I had huge sort outs after that, and still do. I went to the other extreme where if it's not being used, I don't need it, and off it goes on freecycle or to charity!

I can't BEAR throwing anything away with any life left in it. Even old towels and sheets can go to doggies homes..

I will admit to loving car boot sales, though.. I buy household stuff and books (which go off again when I've read them!) and I've had some brilliant stuff from freecycle over the years. I suppose the only thing I do collect is recycling, temporarily, until papers, glass etc go off to be sorted!
Recycling gets to be a bit of an obsession!

I have to play with 'em ;) Luckily I've not got any that are worth tonnes! The most I paid was £20 for a box set just so I could get The Mouth of Sauron (and he's quite a vile chap...). Though I did get an extra Doctor Who regeneration set and leave that in the box.

Most of the Japanese ones I've seen though are in decent packaging that's easy to open and keep neat.

Chips, as in fried potatoes?

A woman in my town used to work on the assembly line at a potato crisp factory. She collected crisps that looked like objects and famous people. She had Yogi Bear, Bob Hope, a saguaro cactus and so on. She got to be on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson and was a local celebrity of sorts.

I love it when you get 'action features' that are surprisingly impressive - like the Crossbow shooting Orc which coud easily take someone's eye out. Or action figures with no discernible 'action' - such as Galadriel who has the exciting 'play feature' of....a water jug. ;)

I have the vinyl LP bug. I can't pass a charity shop without having a rummage in the record section. I also have a compulsion to buy tattoo magazines, and when ever I pass a tattoo studio I haven't seen before I nip in and grab their business card. Building up a collection there!

When I was a young teenager I amassed 1000s of American comic books which I consequently gave away (I discovered girls and beer). Some would be worth a fortune now! Grrrrrr.

I collect coppers though I don't keep them forever. Once I have a tenners worth I put them in money bags and take them down to the bank and treat myself with the tenner. It's better than letting them slip behind the sofa.

Thanks to my connections at local cemeteries and refuse collection, I collect body parts and am currently building a bizarre half-man, half-badger creature in my shed.

Before that I used to collect stamps but I just found that a bit too weird.

Have started since the beginning of the year collecting badges too. Not just random badges though by badges I mean everytime I go to see a band live. I get a badge put it through the ticket and put them in a small plastic bag I've got with a seal on. I've got a decent collection for this year.

If anyone collects pigs PM me. Just cleared out my Grandma's loft and have a fair few. Will be selling them and would rather they went as a lot to someone who will enjoy them, even if i get less for them.

I think people should move into smaller houses. I collect all manner of stuff until I run out of space.

My favourite collection is old electric guitars. But I have also collected a range of light up bar fittings. That is those things where the beer comes out. I find it very theraputic to light them up whilst watching the box. Problem is that as soon as you sit down you start wanting a drink.

I think the daftest thing I ever came across was a chap who collected condom packets. (Well at least that was his excuse). Did you know they do a Madonna brand?

i used to collect anything and everything until this past year where i have decided to collect Charlie Bears. It makes it easy to collect them as my Auntie owns The Bear Emporium at Ridgeway. Charlie Bears are also affordable for me as i am only 16 and dont get paid that much.

I used to collect Blind Mole Rat t-shirts, they've all disintegrated now though. I gave up on my life list of birds when I came back from Africa a couple of years ago.

Nowadays I collect books and empty wine bottles
