E-bay might give you a clue as to what something of a similar spec is selling for - if PCWorld are knocking out new 3 gig celeron machines with 256 Mb RAM, 80 gig hard disk, 15" TFT and Windows XP for just over £300 I wouldn't reckon you're going to get that much - what spec is it out of interest?

Put it at the bottom of your wheelie bin, and they won't know ;) But if you are worried, put it in next doors bin :) Alternatively, take it down your nearest dumpit site. They have areas especially for tv's, PC's etc.

Edit - didn't read the bit about no transport, so scrub the last bit :)

Smash it up into little bits and whack it in your bin - thats what id do if I couldnt get to the tip.

I know a firm that will take away old PC's for proper disposal and recycling, and privde you a certificate of disposal (oh. they charge you £10 per item)

certificate to certify what? Put it in a black bin liner and put it in you wheelie bin when it's half full, then continue to put your rubbish in until collection day.

Book a hotel for the night and chuck it out the window. Give your computer a rock n roll funeral.

Hey this is great. I was very naughty in what I said to do considering how obsesive I am about recycling my rubbish.

Stick it on Freecycle. I'm sure someone will be able to make use of it.

there's a Sheffield organisation - a charity - that recycles old pc's for people who can't afford the top stuff. They use bust ones for parts or decent ones to be refurbished. They sell them for about £25 so it's doubtful if they would pay for them. But if you can get them there they'll take them.

Now I can't remember the flippin' name...

But you might try googling it?

Sorry.

Is it lowtech (http://recycle.lowtech.org/) ?

Yeah, lowtech take old pcs. They either reuse for training or take for recycling to proper places.

Just be careful getting rid of PC's if you do online banking etc people can retrieve the information even when you think you have got rid of it. I am aware of someone who sent their old PC to be recycled, it ended up in Somalia his banking info was retrieved even though he thought he had taken it off. Before he found out they had managed to ring up £30,000 just through his bank details, so just take everything out of a PC that would hold this info before you dump it in a wheelie bin.

seems such a waste

Yep - I think it was lowtech, I remember being impressed that they overwrite the hard-drive to remove all previous data properly.

Anyway, it's a good charity and you're helping someone too!
