View Full Version : Any plans for Skyscrapers in Sheffield?
skyfitsboy 16-07-2004, 10:40 Does anyone know if there are plans to build any more skyscrapers in Sheffield like the University of Sheffield's Art's Tower in the near future?
The Sheffield skyline would look great with a few more to make it feel more like a major city rather than just a large town!
jackthedog 16-07-2004, 10:49 I did hear that once Towsure has extended over the entirity of the S6 area, I think they plan to extend upwards, a mile into the sky.
Hey Sky,
The city council drew up a plan to encourage the appropriate use of skyscrapers in the city earlier in the year. As far as I know there are a few in the pipeline.
Construction of the 22 storey Cala Eclipse should development should be underway shortly. Likewise, a second 20 storey + apartment block has just been granted planning permission just off Hanover Way.
Add to this the tower blocks planned as part of the Heart of the City and the new retail quarter and Sheffield look definately to be a city on the move skywards!

I agree- Sheffield needs some really great buildings. The A few high rise buildings would suit the hilly nature or the city - BUT - can we make sure the designs are decent - can we get international architects to do the job rather than the same old dull ones we seem to rely on in Sheffield?
Sheffield was once an amazing city - One of the most fabulous in Europe. Where has the innovation gone. I have said it before, I'll say it again- Sheffield was built by Victorian Geniuses, damaged by Hitler and destroyed by the Sheffield City Planning Authority.
I want to be amazed at the beauty of my city rather than apologetic about it.
Does anyone have any good ideas for new buildings?
Sam Miguel 16-07-2004, 19:35 I would hardly call a twenty-two storey building a skyscraper!
Anyway, however you define these eye-irritating, seriously ugly, dark, tall blots on the landscape, we don't need them, thank you.
I'm quite happy living the low-life.
If we're going to erect some new buildings in Sheffield, let's have some proper erections, that's what I say!
lucasdigital 16-07-2004, 20:25 There are height restrictions in the city centre, which is the only place where the high costs of high-rise construction would be viable.
Why?
So as not to block the view of the town hall!
You can be certain that as Sheffield profile continues to rise, there will be more highrise construction around town. Though I am doubtful you will see construction of on the scale of Leeds. (No small mercy!)
Jackthedog- I don't know who blabbed about the Towsure archology but its supposed to be top-secret.
Plain Talker 16-07-2004, 20:38 Personally speaking, I cannot fathom out the Logic of it all...
Especially, why the council are so keen to have "skyscrapers" put up, (at hanover way and moorfoot are two that come to mind) when they flattened the high rise blocks at Norfolk Park, Pitsmoor, Lowedges (IIRC), Jordanthorpe (2/3), Chapeltown, The main block of Hyde park, and, the next lots, scheduled to go under the dynamite are the three Claywood blocks and the Winn Gardens high-rise, with grange on Tower Drive, Norfolk Park next in line. (trying to think of other blocks that have been demolished)
Its just puzzling.

Captain_Scarlet 16-07-2004, 21:55 Skyscrapers: ace !
rickmiles85 16-07-2004, 21:57 Ive read reports saying that the planned £300m casio by MGM near Meadowhall is having (if theyre bid is chosen) a 150ft, 5star/6star hotel with an observation platform. Because the designer liked a nice round number...:) I dont think the council are as strict as they once were over tallbuildings in the city centre, because they have granted permission for apartments which are part of the NRQ to be build. Im presuming they will be tall judging from the plans. Of course the town hall will be blocked from certain angles depending how its viewed in relation to the apartment tower of the NRQ.

Blocks of flats are hardly akin to skyscrapers.
Look at the WTC, or the HSBC HQ in london, Canary Wharf, Swiss Bank all are skyscapers (70s/80s/90s/00s respectivly) and none of them have lost their appeal as nice looking buildings.
I didn't know there was an apartment tower planned with the NRQ- can you tell me anymore? i heard something about a glass fronted hotel tower and a john lewis or something.
I wonder if there'll be enough people to fill all these new apartments-hannover way, st mary's gate, st paul's place etc
Well there are more people than houses at the moment (hence house price rises) so id say yes.
Also remember that because of greenfield planning restrictions there just aren't the number of houses being built in Sheffield (or anywhere else) that there were a few years ago.
You notice a big spanking new apartment building in the City Centre. You don't notice a lack of housing estates.

it's not really that simple though is it- not everyone can afford to move into luxury apartments in sheffield centre and for many (e.g. families) it is not suitable. The apartments are designed for a more specific market.
