Is it just me or is anyone else annoyed at the lack of choices when it comes to supermarket shopping? I live near the city centre and the only choice is Safeway's. I know I could go to Tesco on Archer's road but it's a hell of a long way to drive. The next nearest to me is Safeways (again!!) on Pennistone Road! I find Safeways awful on food and price.

It's now 3.17am and I'm ordering my food online @ SainsburystoYou

Why don't you try that? The only problem is that fresh stuff is normally old and nearly out of date

Ones near me (Bramall Road): Safeway, Sainsburys Central, Tesco Metro down Ecclesall Road that's about it. Yeah you're right!

For my food shopping I go one week to Netto and the next to the Market, topping up on vegetables from New Roots on Glossop Road. Since I dont have a car its easiest for me to get the Tram to Leppings Lane in Hillsborough and go to the Netto over the road from that stop rather than walk to the nearer Netto at Walkly.

I dont know if your one of these people who think that Markets are not hygenic enough, because to anyone who is I would just like to point out that the Market is full of old people, 60+. They manage to cope with the food, and so should we all. The meat there is significantly cheaper and nicer than any supermarket I have used. take chicken fillets for example. They are about £4.50/kilo compared to about £5.99/kilo at somerfield (last time I checked) and they are a lot bigger fillets which makes me think the chickens must have been looked after better.

 Please don't think that chickens are 'looked after better' by anyone who deals in the atrocity of selling these poor creature for human consumption, Chickens are living creatures, animals, not for slaughtering by having their throats cut and bleeding to death painfully slow, everyone ought to give vegetarianism a go, for the life and love of all, it would certainly clear a few people's' consciences let alone the biological workings of the human body, so come on GO VEGETARIAN!

Blessings to all

Im a veggie so you know what my stance is on the subject,Ill challenge any meat eater out there one thing, everythings fine when its given to you all done and dusted, mmmm nice juicy steak on ya plate, NOT!!!!! take the living pig etc you wanna eat, find a humane method to kill it then YOU do it with your own hands!! yes, any meat you eat from now on you gotta kill yourself, wonderful isnt it,not got that killing instinct??? why not, you eat it ,the screams of a poor defenceless animal looking up at you cause you want to fill that belly!!!,sounds harsh dosent it, it is,do me a favour, the next time you fancy sausage and mash with liver hold your thought for a mo!!! " what animal killed your dinner for you tonight"????

I dont have a garden and so I doubt Ill be able to keep animals myself. We humans have been killing animals for food for a hell of long time, and had we not done that then we wouldn't be here. A huge amount of animals died for you to be here.

Whats more all animals will die, for food or from disease and old age. Whilst I agree that the killing of animals in an inhumane way is a Bad Thing, the only way to have a pain free life is not to be born in the first place. (Or be some animal/plant without nerve cells!)

So...would you be able to kill your own pig then cook it?? :(

foot note... alot of people died for you to be here too, making the same mistakes as they always made, thats why we're up **** creek with no paddles, someone has to stop it, its got to end, lets all do what we always did, it worked for our ancestors..IT DIDNT!! as we sit on the brink of war again it shows we learnt all our lessons from the past ( NOT)what Im saying is. if a few people started changing a little of their lifes who knows things might get better somewhere?? worth a tought

"Whats more all animals will die, for food or from disease and old age"

...your statement...whats it mean?? does it mean because they are animals they are gonna die anyway so hey!!! lets eat em,mmmm , perhaps we can do that with humans too, they are gonna die anyway, so hey!! lets shoot em....because they are animals it dont mean we can kill them in their prime just because they cant turn around and speak to say NO!!, and just because something has been done for years done make it right...look at murder!!

Mr Convert - Here here! You have summed up my reply to RF nicely.

RF - Do you know the first humans on earth DIDN'T eat meat as you so think they did, once we were a society of vegetarians! In the UK alone, 800 million animals are slaughtered for food each year. Then they're transported from factory farm, to livestock market, then to the horrors of the slaughterhouse.
Some have to endure the long, stressful haul to markets abroad, often in extremes of weather without adequate provisions such as food, water, air and light, to places where conditions are even worse. Livestock farming makes inefficient use of limited resources. Millions of people go hungry and thirsty in the developing world while grain and water is squandered on rearing animals to be slaughtered for food in the developed world. Plus the fact RF that millions of hectares of life sustaining rain forest are destroyed each year to create grazing pasture. This kills off and puts at risk animal species and indigenous human populations.
You may as well give up Mr RF as you have lost your argument, we have developed and come a long way, WE DO NOT NEED MEAT TO SURVIVE' in 2003, it's just unfortunately a habbit that people like you can't/refuse to break! :!: Just because we have been 'doing it for centuries' doesn't make it right!

Whilst I like a good debate, this topic is meant to be about the lack of choice for central Sheffield supermarkets. Please bear this in mind...

Thanks

I doubt the issue of being a vegetarian is limited solely to the people of Sheffield and therefore this kind of discussion would be better off in the other forum - click here. (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=2)

Also, for two users that are proud to stand up for their convictions, why are you hiding behind a mask of anonymity? Why not register and join the growing community :)

'Hiding behind anonymity'? I Myself hide behind no mask Mr Geoff, this forum asks for 'username' not 'real name' of which I would have gladly supplied you with, therefore my username of which it requires is 'Donteyowtwieye'. There are many on this forum using anonymous names e.g sidla, guest, RF etc. Should it become statutory on this forum to enter 'real name' then I should be only too happy to supply you with it.

P.S What's a Vegetaran?

Are there any term and conditions I could peruse whilst using this site, of what not to talk about and what I'm allowed to converse with my fellow Sheffielders about? Blessings from above Donteytowtwieye.

As I mentioned before "I doubt the issue of being a vegetarian is limited solely to the people of Sheffield and therefore this kind of discussion would be better off in the other forum". You can talk about vegetarianism until the cows (!) come home, but just do it in the correct forum.

As for the issue of anonymity I was referring to the fact you are a guest. Unless you register, then anyone will be able to use/misuse your username. Also if you register then you can use the handy "edit" function for when you mis-spell vegetarian

I have summed up (with my own bias I know) the debate so far on vegetarianism and started a new topic here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=35) complete with a poll. lets leave this topic for comments about supermarkets.

Yes. I'm a geek and Im proud. Without geeks we wouldn't have gone to the moon, we wouldn't have cars, planes, trains, boats, cash registers, computers, the internet, the wheel.......

Richard - So what have you pioneered?

richard
09-01-2003, 17:05
Perhaps I overlooked the other important part of the geek character which is of supreme importance to the world, and the one which I can claim to have some part in. Maintainance of technological stuff, like the TV remote, changing batteries etc. Right now im still in the learning phase anyway. But if the geeks of the world rose up for some reason the world would be thrown back to the stone age.

Ermm, what do you look like Gem?

Good and bad news for you then - it's just been announced today Safeways is being taken over by Morrisons, so you won't have to suffer Safeways food/prices but there'll be even less choice!

Less choice *and* miserable staff. My closest Morrisons is near Mosborough and if a Tesco's was closer I'd use it even though they are a bit more expensive. After waiting in a queue the last thing I need is a miserable face. Saying that they prolly get paid next to nothing and have crap bosses. Hey ho... :)
