View Full Version : Do you know your I.Q.
dynamicdebz 02-09-2006, 23:47 I have done my I.Q on line loads of times & me & my partner always do test the nation when its on TV like tonight.
Everytime I get 111 for my I.Q its been the same for years. My fella always gets around 100 (absolute average).
My fella is 7 years younger than me, so he's not always in the same age bracket as me which means I usually have to get a lot more right than him to get the score I usually get.
When we did it tonight (it was on TV) I had had 1 brandy too many & I ended up having an I.Q of 97, my fellas was 102.
I was devastated!
Have I suddenly got that dim in the past 12 months?
I must say we now come in the same age bracket & he got 4 more questions right than me. There wasn't the normal set of questions, it was all about jigsaws & pictures, no maths or english type questions.
I don't mind my fella having a higher I.Q. than me but I am depressed that my I Q has dropped from 111 to 97! Oh & the fact that we take the quiz very seriously & have a little bet on it.
I have got to do his supper now & he gets to decide on our bedroom activites.
Well done to your fella, I suspect I can guess his choice of 'activity'. However, I just don't understand why anyone would do an IQ test. Precisely what does it achieve?
Precisely what does it achieve?
To determine whether or not you're a Dunce.
IQ tests are rubbish. I did one once and it said I had an IQ of 365 but whenever I go to the pub and drink beir I sudenly loose the capasity 4 speach and end up eating fried egg sandwiches. I mean, I ask you, what sort of god allows bad things to happen to childen, Millenniun hand and shrimp, buggrit, your my best mate you are
kookymonster 03-09-2006, 00:03 IQ tests tell you how good you are at IQ tests. They aren't a true indication of intelligence I'm afraid. Good for you at doing well though, it proves you value learning and intelligence.
I don’t have an I.Q. to boast about — but having studied at the University of Life I reckon if I did I’d have something to keep quiet about. I know a lot about some things but very little about others. Average, I’d say. A bean and a half, a bean and a half, half a bean and a bean and a half = 5. And two and two occasionally adds up to four — unless you’re a politician. Then it becomes more of statistic, like 80 per cent of all politicians produce 93 per cent of all statistics.
dynamicdebz 03-09-2006, 09:53 Its nothing to do with how clever you are, its more of you know how to use your brain.
Don_Kiddick 03-09-2006, 10:09 Know irt? I carnt evan smell it!
Its nothing to do with how clever you are, its more of you know how to use your brain.
Agreed- same as those bloody Mensa tests!
I did the 'Test the Nation - National IQ Test' online last night from the BBC!!!
I scored IQ 115 which I thought was great considering I had drank a whole bottle of wine and was feeling pretty tipsy!!!!
You can still take part in the test - it will be available for another couple of weeks!!
In fact I might try it again sober!!
Test the Nation IQ Test (http://www.bbc.co.uk/testthenation/)
:)
I did the 'Test the Nation' test last night and I came out with an IQ of 130!!
My mum is very proud:hihi:
I think you needed to have had a drink before doing the Test the Nation quiz last night. The graphics were horrendous ~ I couldn't focus on most of them, so being slightly the worse for wear might have been an advantage (I wasn't).
I had to give up after a very short period of time, because it was actually making me nauseous.
Jabberwocky 03-09-2006, 10:52 I did a "Government approved" IQ test in the 90s and the result said I had an IQ of 164.
Now come on! Everybody who knows me knows that I takes me 20 minutes to fasten my shoe laces AND I have to ask for help half way through!
Its a load of... pumpkin poo.
melthebell 03-09-2006, 10:54 know my IQ?
i barely know my waist size :P

I know my waist size and its higher than my IQ!

Here is my results breakdown anyhow :hihi:
Got 46/70 correct
Observation A - 5/9
Understanding - 6/9
Logic - 8/14
Puzzle Solving 10/14
Perception - 10/15
Observation B - 7/9

Belinkabelle 03-09-2006, 11:07 I had my IQ measured a few years back and came out at 145, just five more points would have put me in genius territory (apparently!). Still, I think they're a silly notion. They really do just measure your ability to perform on IQ tests. Nothing more. There's a definite cultural bias with them. :loopy:
I tried to do the Test The Nation one following the link posted earlier. Doesn't seem to work for me, most of the graphics aren't displayed. Perhaps if my IQ is that high I should be able to figure the problem out for myself! Any suggestions as to how I can make it work? Didn't get any prompts about having inadequate software etc.
Have you thought of donating your sperm ? :hihi:
Funnily enough- yes :hihi:
Its £12 a go as well so I've heard :o
Don_Kiddick 03-09-2006, 11:14 Kleenex would be worth a fortune if only they'd known earlier :hihi:

PUZZLE SOLVING.....10/14
PERCEPTION...........13/15
OBSERVATION B.......8/9
donuticus 03-09-2006, 11:45 My I.Q is 172. I agree its not neccessarily about intelligence but the speed at which your brain can analyse and interpret any given set of instructions and act upon them accordingly.
I am however officially a genius and a member of mensa, which alwasy looks good on your CV. :hihi:
The last Test The Nation I got 130-something, this year only 119 :( Obviously I'm getting stupider, as when I was I kid I did e Mensa test and got 165
pattricia 03-09-2006, 12:03 Funnily enough- yes :hihi:
Its £12 a go as well so I've heard :o
Ill have a ton ! :D Seriously I hate Anne Robinson and Test The Nation. Its so condesending, know what I mean ?
fozzybronze 03-09-2006, 12:13 I know my waist size and its higher than my IQ!
Nice one.
Got 113 last night whilst enjoying a bottle of wine. The wife got 111. We weren't convinced of the validity of the questions particularly the morphing ones. If you knew who the people were that were morphed you knew the answer before the options.
Killed a couple of hours though.
We both started horrendously though 3/9 & 0/9 respectively...I guess we are not good observationally...lets face it I never realise when she's had her hair done! :hihi:
YakQueudrue 03-09-2006, 12:40 I just don't understand why anyone would do an IQ test. Precisely what does it achieve?
It tells you what your IQ is.
pattricia 03-09-2006, 12:47 It tells you what your IQ is.
But why do you need to know ? How can you TEST intelligence ? For instance I know a 91 year old woman, Who is illiterate, because she didnt go to school, who can dictate the most startling, wonderful poetry that you can imagine. She wouldnt have been able to read "Test The Nation".
I've had a go at 3 Mensa IQ tests ..... bloody head hurt afterwards ..lol. Scores were... 143,141,144 .................. not bad I spose. vStill not got round to do the Test The Nation thing
EdnaKrabappe 03-09-2006, 13:47 Well seeing as I've just wasted twenty five mins doing this when I should be preparing for school, I think a lack of common sense is lacking in myself!:loopy:
But I got 58/70 I.Q. 139 which is about the same as I always get.
Observation 6/9
Understanding 8/9
Logic (the number puzzles and dominoes) 8/14 - my worst category!
Puzzle 14/14 Yey!
Perception 15/15 Dead chuffed at this as this is an area I had work hard to improve my brain in as I find it difficult.
Observation 7/9 The spot the difference ones got me.
fox20thc 03-09-2006, 14:10 :| 109 - I got more last year.. definately getting thicker :P
Ill have a ton ! :D Seriously I hate Anne Robinson and Test The Nation. Its so condesending, know what I mean ?
I wonder if there is a market for my super sperm :hihi:
You might have to wait a bit thought patricia for a ton though.
Plain Talker 03-09-2006, 14:50 I do know that when I was tested, I proved that I have the ability to do these tests, and I scored in the high 150s (155-158 approx)
However, I can say with confidence that the IQ tests prove nothing more than the ability to do such tests.
pattricia 03-09-2006, 15:03

yeah thanks for that then, mine is 83
Crayfish 03-09-2006, 19:59 I seem to get wildly varying scores on IQ tests - the test the nation thing was one of the lowest at 117.
I think I can put some of that down to the fact that once pressed an answer could not be changed though, as I accidentally clicked on random / wrong buttons about five times!
mentalhh 03-09-2006, 20:32 I took my IQ just over 2 years ago it was 129 I think. I took the test the nation and fell to like to about 119. What happened? Perhaps its because 2 years ago I was dutifully studying for exams like the good girl I am :P and when I took the test the nation thing I was just after a not v. stimulating summer hols (bout to go to uni in sheffield) so perhaps due to lack of stimulation I fell down on my IQ?
Just a thought.

All IQ tests are different. Everyone I know has scored lower on Test the Nation than on any others including official tests. The major problem of the BBC test is that it is biased towards the lower end f the IQ curve. The highest attainable score is 146, and there is a significant percentage of people that have an IQ above this. They are not likely to score 146 in this test because everyone is likely to get one or two questions incorrect through either clicking the wrong button too soon, or not paying full attention.
koenigsinger 03-09-2006, 20:40 took the test, scored 130, yadda yadda dont really think it's much of a measure of intellect
Go on then, I`ll wash my Hendersons Relish bottle out ready for the sample.!!!:hihi: :hihi: :hihi:
I'll see what I can do then for you :hihi:
Crayfish 03-09-2006, 21:20 It's too long and a bit boring, some of the explanations for what you're supposed to do aren't good enough, and it is biased towards those with certain skills or cultural backgrounds (for instance someone who tied knots with scouts or whatever would have more of an idea about the string-knotting part).
It's hugely long and - especially - boring!
I've done online IQ tests before (out of curiousity ;) ) which have been far snappier.
I reckon the results (when they're finally out) will show that people in Sheffield have unusually-long lengths of patience! (It won't feature my results on that, I gave up on the waiting time).
I made a start on the online test, but stopped at the 'visual illusions' section - about three minutes in, as I recall. Rather an odd (and certainly unconventional, if not dubious) category to include in an IQ test, I thought.
Crayfish 03-09-2006, 21:45 Yep, and the face-morphing bit rewards celebrity knowledge... the categories actually get much more dubious as you go through it, believe it or not!
The whole thing looks like it's been designed by website engineers / graphic designers showing off without actually thinking about what an IQ test should involve.
Admittedly quite a well put together test aesthetically, but I wasn't impressed by the content.
Yep, and the face-morphing bit rewards celebrity knowledge... the categories actually get much more dubious as you go through it, believe it or not! ...
I did wonder if there had been any involvement from academic psychologists in the design of the test. By the sound of that, I would assume not! What a ridiculous category to include in a supposed 'IQ' test. It completely invalidates it, as such tests are meant to be culturally independent, focussing instead on logical reasoning skills etc.
Crayfish 03-09-2006, 21:52 Yes, I was surprised actually - I recall last year's version being a bit better. The putting-scenes-in-order bit would have flummoxed an african kid too, as it used cues like drinking coffee to assign a chronological order to the pictures. Tell the truth, some of them flummoxed me e.g. one depicting a business presentation or some such.
dynamicdebz 03-09-2006, 23:35 130 whatever, don't believe you.
Bet you cheated or we've got a lot of very clever people here.
dynamicdebz 03-09-2006, 23:37 OMG I guess there is no time scale on the one on the net???
fox20thc 03-09-2006, 23:38 ;) and you can print off the answers before you start :P
YakQueudrue 03-09-2006, 23:39 I did mine tonight and got 131 - do I win a prize?
dynamicdebz 03-09-2006, 23:40 If I go by some of the online ones mine is 173 which is a load of bull. There is a time limit.
Test the nation is about as close to the real thing that you can get but by no way accurate. To get a proper test you have to apply to mensa which costs money but definitely accurate.
Beakerzoid 03-09-2006, 23:54 Have sat Mensa tests twice, once when I was 18 (result=143) and once when I was 29 (result=133).
However, I just don't understand why anyone would do an IQ test. Precisely what does it achieve?
To determine whether or not you're a Dunce.
Wrong answer.
IQ tests tell you how good you are at IQ tests. They aren't a true indication of intelligence I'm afraid.
Correct.
In fact, mine was a rhetorical question. People do IQ tests so that if they get a good score they can tell anyone who will listen that they’ve got a good score. It achieves nothing.
On a more interesting note, dynamicdebz, what did you have for supper and ‘afters’?
waldershelf 04-09-2006, 14:50 IQ tests are rubbish.
