View Full Version : New Manager, New England?
AWilson91 02-09-2006, 18:32 9 goals in 2 games for the former Middlesbrough manager, Steve Mclaren. Great start to his job as the England manager. Fair enough, 5 goals against Andorra was pretty much expected but 4-0 against Euro 2004 Champions, Greece, is a cracking first result.
Plus Steve Mclaren is just as enthusiastic as the players for the win (you'd never see Sven stood up at the side of the pitch, shouting across to the team!). Nice to see more than 1 striker upfront aswell, rather than just playing Crouch and dishing out the constant long balls.
Should be another easy 3 points on Wednesday against Macedonia, if so, team morale will be flying. Hope this is the start of great things to come!:D
I hope so too, but Greece are terrible and a shadow of the side that won Euro 2004. That being said, you can only beat what is in front of you. A good start for McLaren
I fear the honeymoon period will be over soon, and the red tops will soon be sharpening their knives. Steve McClanger anyone?
I'm just waiting for us to come up against someone- decent!
luckycharm 03-09-2006, 09:07 Owen Hargreaves - what a player! I'm full of respect for him...he took so much stick in the run up to the World Cup and for me ended up being England's best player...unlucky not to score yesterday! Hopefully he'll be playing in the premiership soon.

Yes, I agree. Ulli Hoeness is a stubborn ****** when he wants to be and he has been known to wreck a footballers career before if he finds out that they don't want to play for his beloved Bayern. Mind you, I heard Owen Hargreaves signed an extension to his contract before the World Cup which IMO was a bit Naive.

Owen Hargreaves' free kick was amazing! Shame it didnt find the back of the net though, but his power and accuracy were spot on, who needs David Beckham!
Hargreaves deserved a goal yesterday , he was superb shame about Lampard he was poor again & Gerrard although his goal was class he let too many passes go astray, he needs to sort that out then he will be the finished article.Crouch amazes again a bloke of his size & a great touch on the ball 10 goals in 9 games he is gunning for Charltons 49 goals.
AWilson91 03-09-2006, 12:51 Peter Crouch, i really dont like the bloke. i personally think he is a waste of space, he just happens to be in the right place at the right time (an English version of Ruud Van Nistelrooy!). When Owen is fit and Rooney is not banned for 1 reason or the other :hihi:, that is the England Strike force. Jermaine Defoe is better than crouch also but just doesn't get recognised for it as Crouch is always playin.
barnie41 03-09-2006, 12:54 Lets not get ahead of ourselves - four goals against a very poor Greece team and five against Andorra means nothing.
I hope it all carries on like this, but Mclarens England have played no one of any strength yet.

All top strikers have to be in the right place at the right time to score,Lineker was a top scorer & he never hit 25 yrd goals he was a poacher like Alan Clarke etc: and to score 10 in 9 matches is no mean feat no matter who the opposition is.

Let's not forget Greece are the Euro Champions,ok the side that played England were poor, that is what they are Champions.
sufc_tom 03-09-2006, 16:36 Definately a new England, One I feel passionate about supporting again and haven't felt since Glenn Hoddles tenure.
First off, Mac making the bold decisions for the better off the team - Dropping Beckham, Not selecting players because of their club jersey and not begrudging on form players. Secondly, the tactics. The midfield of Gerrard, Lampard, Hargreaves, Downing looks as formidible as any in the world in practice, whereas the previous thief-of-a-living chose which one looked better on paper. Lampard and Gerrard given freedom to use all of their attributes with Hargreaves allowing them to do so.
Finally, the players look like they are under a new lease of life under Mac and Tel. Two passionate, competent English coaches who both bring differant qualities and experience to the infrastructure.
Well done England and keep it up.
princealbert 03-09-2006, 18:43 Im reserving judgment till we play a proper team.
Agent Gypo 05-09-2006, 11:29 5 goals scored against an international side made up of part-time players is hardly anything to shout about.

I thought it was a worrying performance. The midfield is far too ponderous with the ball. We had almost total possession and almost total territorial advantage against a team who couldn't cut it in the GM conference, and yet we didn't create a huge number of chances.
Andorra kept 11 men behind the ball and were able to reposition themselves when play was switched because it happened too slowly.
Downing and Lampard looked very poor and Hargreaves is too lacking in creativity to be selected in central midfield against a team who are just going to park the proverbial bus in front of goal.
Defoe looked sharp and I would have liked to see him and Johnson play out the last 20 minutes.
