View Full Version : Birthday party venues, suggestions and soft play centres
Went along this morning and it was a nice little group. I went because my friend goes and I wanted to catch up with her. Its nice and handy for us and the timing is good as we were back in time for her (early) lunch. Maybe see you there another time lilmissalien. I know what its like getting out the house on a morning when things dont go to plan!
Boosmum I think you prob thought I meant Jelly's- my fault for not being specific as I had talked about going there in my last post  sorry. I went to jelly's last week but got my timings wrong and nobody was there :hihi: Emily tends to have a big nap in her cot after lunch which is when i get stuff done, but I still plan to come to jellys again sometime soon :)
stub1000 17-07-2008, 11:30 we took my daughter to alphabet zoo on amos road a couple of weeks ago and we had a nice party. the children had a great time playing on the soft play areas and the birthday party there was value for money! we used http://www.playbarnfinder.com/ to find the details if anyone is interested :)

x-GiGgLeS-x 19-07-2008, 07:52 I haven't read al lthe thread because there is loads so if someone already said what I have im sorry.lol.
I have to say, I love the Alphabet Zoo and Im sure my son does too :hihi:
We had a little party there the other week with Young mums group because it's now the holidays :( and I have to say we enjoyed it. The people that run the Alpha Zoo are so nice and friendly and they don't really mind if we play on the equipment (which we normally do) :) They are even open on a Sunday should anyone wish to take the kiddies. It is free for under 1's then I think its about £2 for over. But you can stay in as long as you like and they have a cafe etc..
I also like the Mega Centre but I think Its probably more for a little older ones where as the Alpha Zoo more for younger ones (tots) IMO. Mega Centre serve sandwiches for £3.20 but Alpha Zoo serves hot food and cheap! Mega Centre is not open on a Sunday though. But I do like both places. :P
So anyway, If you want soft play areas try these. I also heard Jungle Mania (Near Darnall) is meant to be good but I have not been here yet so don't know.
Has anybody been to this play centre yet? I think it's quite new. I was just wondering if they had a toddler area and if it was any good?
yes i've been, they do have an area for under 3's which was quite good, my sons just 3 and i also trawled around the bigger bit with him which he enjoyed......all lovely and clean too wiv it being new xx
It's great - although at the moment with horrible weather it's jam packed full.
If you have little ones (I have 4&2 - it's not good at the moment as there are the boisterous 6-8 year olds that are in there running all over and playing "lets knock each other (and everyone is our path) over with the footballs"!) It's much better when school starts and all the older ones are back at school during the day!!!
Thanks for your replies. What kind of things is there in the toddler bit? I've been to Kidz Kingdom (I guess they're not so happy about this one opening up so close to them!) and was wondering if the toddler bit was better at this new one. I had thought it might be a bit of a nightmare at the mo with it being the holidays and bad weather!
didnt know another had opened can someone give me some information where it is please

Its in the building that Direct Wholesale was in.
I've been in here today and found it to be dirty in all the corners and edges, crumbs and accumulated dirt in general.
Also not keen on the open ended kitchen, an adventurous toddler could get into some sort of trouble in there.
I like the look of the equipment and my kids certainly liked it, though the not very slidey slide soon wore off as a novelty. The tables are all bubbled and bumpy after just 4 months of being open.
The £4.25 weekend rate is a bit of a swizz too.
I have to say I like Kidz Kingdom better.
That doesn't sound too good then. We haven't been yet and were considering trying it next week. How does the toddler bit compare to Kidz Kingdom in terms of how big it is, what there is for them to do etc?
There's a space around the same sort of size, a climbing ramp up to an upper level with a plastic bubble they can climb in, a double slide, a ball blower, all on a large padded area with enormous lego pieces and some soft shapes and then there's a car track which is tiny with 3 Little Tikes cars.
The area is brightly coloured and not bad but the novelty very quickly wore off for the gruesome twosome and they only wanted to go on the over 3's or 4's bit.
The toddler area isn't worth the fee in my opinion, not so bad if your child likes both, but even then, the fee is too high.
We went yesterday. I would say it's just as good as Kidz Kingdom. The toddler bit is one area which meant my little boy could run around more than he can at Kidz Kingdom. He loved the ball blower, his mouth just hung open in disbelief! Although I feel that the toddler sections in all these places aren't really enough to keep him interested now that he is walking. It cost £4.25 to get in which I was miffed about because in sheffield the holidays are over so I don't see why they were still charging peak rate. They gave me a loyalty card but you have to go 9 times before you can get the 10th free. I think that's hoping a bit as I can't see us going that many times at their prices.
I paid attention to how clean it was and I thought it was fairly clean apart from yes there was crumbs and fluff in some of the gaps.
Overall I think it's probably worth the money at the non peak rate and for older children. I don't understand why these places don't do a cheaper rate for toddlers as they don't provide anywhere near the same amount of equipment as they do for the older ones.
That's a good idea Corbyn, a lower rate for toddlers would make sense. I think I'm hard done to with twins at times so I judge harshly when it's twice over for the same age.
I'm still not keen on the variety of the larger frame, my girls were bored a little quicker than I'd like and they are generally a pair of mountain goats who adore climbing and slides.
My girls loved the blower too, there was a girl there last weekend who was doing the whole front of the Titanic routine on top if it which was hilarious! She looked so cute and was entirely unaware of the imagery of course :D
He he. There was a little girl there when we went just stood in the middle, on top of it letting it blow her skirt up in the air. She looked very funny!
boomerang 17-09-2008, 11:25 Just as the title says, anyone been to The Big Tops in Dinnington, what is it like? Are there many things to do there and is the price ok? Looking at this for a possible birthday party venue.
I've been to Big Tops and although it's a nice play centre with plenty to do, I find it hard to watch my kids because it's all spread out so much. So I end up laden like a pack horse and sitting in a heap on the floor nearest the play equipment they are on.
Other than being a logistical nightmare it's a nice enough place.
angelbeast 21-09-2008, 19:32 hello, i've been to these places elsewhere, one was called Hickory Dickory's and they are great for rainy days, they are big padded areas with ball pools and slides and climbing frames but all safe and the best ones have a cafe where you can retreat back and let the little'uns get tired out whilst you have a cuppa. but are there any in sheffield? i've not heard of any but i'm sure there must be
cheers in advance x
cosywolf 21-09-2008, 20:14 Have a look at this thread for quite a few opinions on most Sheffield soft play centres: http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=139514&highlight=Kidz+Kingdom
You'll find a couple more if you do a search on soft play
x-GiGgLeS-x 22-09-2008, 05:49 Hi,
Yes there are plenty of these in Sheffield. The Mega Centre (hyde park tram stop near town) its free for under 1's and then £2 per child over and can play allday. This has a little cafe that sells hot and cold drinks and sarnies.
There is also Alpha Zoo (near Meadowhall) this is also free for under 1s and I think its about £2 or £2.50 for every child after. This has a little cafe that sells almost anything. Bacon butty, chips cheese anything really.
There is also Jungle Mania (Darnall) but Im not sure on the price or anything.
Theres plenty more around just a case of asking people.
angelbeast 22-09-2008, 18:28 many thanks for this, all the parents i know are first timers with under ones so we're all new to it, i've found one near me thanks to the link from cosywolf, i didn't find anything when i searched on this forum before as i didn't separate the words soft and play but typed softplay instead! duh! xxx
honeyb35 30-09-2008, 17:42 any ideas for party suggestions for my daughter? She will be 8 in January. I think shes getting a little old for soft play areas really, and would rather do something with a handful of friends instead of inviting the whole class! I can't afford a lot as its literally just over a week after christmas. I tried to book mcdonalds last year but they don't 'do parties in the school holidays' and I've found a few places are the same!
I took her and her cousins to the panto last year, it was good fun but I think she needs something different this year! Plus her grandma wants to take her to one on her own.
Zebra do you still do party stuff?

How about bowling - I think Hollywood Bowl is about £8 per person (minimum of 6) incs bowling and a meal - or if you are near Handsworth Bowling is cheaper and just as good.
cosywolf 30-09-2008, 20:53 Or perhaps one of the ceramic pinting places like Fired Arts? The cost depends on what they choose to paint, so you could pick out something quite inexpensive beforehand. And they'd all get a really nice present out of it.
Fired Arts also do cake and drinks (I only mention them in particular because they're the only ones I've been to.)
Ecclesall Woods Sawmill are also running Dangerous Club for Kids parties, which are outdoor and fairly rough and ready, so perhaps not too expensive? Good fun oudoor adventure stuff.
Or have a make your own pizza and cookies party at home with a good girlie dvd to finish off with - even a pj party, if you're brave enough
;p

eeeeek no for the pj party lol!!! a handful of 8 yr old girls running around - I'd br grey, or bald!!
I like the idea of the painting one, thinking about it theres somewhere at elsecar which is very close to me, i'll give them a ring. Outdoor is a no no as its in Jan though, we'd no doubt get the worst weather in England on the day!
Bowlings ok but she did that at a party very recently and I don't want to look like I'm copying, pathetic I know!

sarahknowles 02-10-2008, 17:26 My son is 1 on the 15th (dont ask me where the time has gone as i really dont have a clue!) And me and hubby have no idea what to do for it. His birthday is on a wednesday so was thinking maybe doing something with all my mummy friends on the day. And then perhaps have a little tea party for family and close friends the weekend after.
What did you all do for your little ones 1st Birthdays? Its such a special time i really want to remember it.
Cant wait to hear your ideas. Thanks :)
i wouldnt do anything to much as they soon get overwhelmed and it ends up not being a nice time for them, a small family party will be nice with people your lo knows
Yeah my little one ended up being poorly on his 1st birthday so all plans went to pot. But a family meal or a day out somewhere goes down well. We took my son to a farm when he was well enough and he loved it. Save the big parties for when they are old enough to understand (and demand them haha!).
SpeedDemon 02-10-2008, 19:34 We have had small family tea parties for all ours. If it's a summer birthday, it's a BBQ and garden party, if it's a winter one, it's in the house. Not too many people or they get mardy and overwhelmed.
We just had Grandparent's and Aunties around for a dinner, opening presents and a cake. DD didn't really know what was going on and we did the same for her 2nd. I might make more of a fuss for her 3rd but will wait till nearer the time and see how she is and whether she would notice really.
Merged, you may have more luck here

family four 04-11-2008, 07:06 i recommand people whos got kids to go to jungle mania its a great place to go staff are frienly so are the managers food is great and play area is big and its a clean place to go.its cheao to get in and also if its not busy they let you stay for however long you want.partys are great to ive been going here for a year and half so believe me its wealth going and taking kids this it the best 1 in sheffield ive visited all of them and i always go to jungle mania on a tues:thumbsup:
x-GiGgLeS-x 04-11-2008, 07:09 Can I just ask is Jungle Mania £5 per child? How long do you get for that? I know where it is and a family memeber booked a party there once Im glad I couldnt take my little one because from what she said they have loads of parties going on at once etc..
family four 04-11-2008, 07:14 its 2.75 and if there not busy you can stay longer then 2 hours.most place after 2 hours chuck you out or you have to pay extra.im going to set up a gruop on tues for parents to talk to each other so kids can go and play.also on a monday weds and fri ther do so of a toddle gropu same plice but you get a discount on coffee and kids get free toasr and drink and they can do all sorts
Depends when you go if its a nice experience i used to take my daughter every week but it got that is was dirty the staff couldnt be bothered i got sick of going and complaining, there were groups of mothers who had just gone to get their little darlings off their hands for a couple of hours and never watched what they were doing and if you dont mind your toddler getting jumped on by roudy 12 year olds (not in school time) then yes its brill
x-GiGgLeS-x 04-11-2008, 07:19 The Mega Centre is only £2 per child and you can stay in all day and on some days the kids get free toast and juice also. The parents can sit close and watch there children play and have a chat and a coffee. I like the Mega centre and I always go
x-GiGgLeS-x 04-11-2008, 07:20 The Alpha Zoo near meadowhall is cheap too I think thats the same price as the Mega Centre (cant be certain) and the staff there are lovely and thats open allday and on Sundays too.
there are loads better than jungle mania in my opinion i thing jungle mania is getting very tired and their under 5s area is far too small and boring, kids kingdom is also very good and there is another opening shortly at handsworth

I agree I think there is better places also. I have never been inside Jungle Mania but I have been outside and others have been who said its not very good.
Where is Kids Kingdom?
clarez85 04-11-2008, 08:22 http://www.kidzkingdomplay.co.uk/
heres website for kids kingdom. its quite new. very clean, staff r great and kids are always entertained there. highly recommend it *******
I have been to Jungle mania and I must say I didn't think it was up to much. Like almost everyone else on this thread who has been, I found it to be dirty and the staff weren't helpful and were more happy to stand talking to each to each other than doing their job.
Although it has a big cafe area it doesn't appear to be very well kept.
I know this isn't want you want to hear family four but it's my opinion (and that of many many others) whilst it's the closest play centre to me being just over High Hazels park I wouldn't choose to go there and would instead much rather travel to Crystal Peaks to Kidz Kingdom.
Merged with the rest of the soft play thread
We used to go to Kidz Kingdom quite a lot too and always enjoyed it. We tend to go to the newer one near to it now though called Run Around because my little one seems to prefer it. I think the toddler bit is better as it's all one area which keeps him entertained easier. But they are both good playcentres. When will the new one open in Handsworth?
Armadillo 12-12-2008, 16:09 Hi, keep hearing an ad on hallam fm for a new playcentre opening at centertaiment but i can't remember the name of the website, it's called something like cheeky monkeys - can anyone help? thanks
SpeedDemon 12-12-2008, 17:04 Here you go...
http://www.monkey-bizness.co.uk/contact_sheffield.html
Armadillo 13-12-2008, 15:55 thanks, it was driving me made. I had tried to google that but foolishly spelled business correctly!!
x-GiGgLeS-x 15-12-2008, 06:33 Hi, Im glad you asked about this becuase I didnt know it was opening or anything so now I know i will have to take a trip down there :)
There is a new indoor playcentre opening on the 6th of january, its called the World of Wild and its on the industrial estate at the back of the old asda at Handsworth, its going to be fantastic for kids and parents because while the kids play and run off some energy the parents can sit and have a cup of the many coffee's that will be on offer.

What age range is it designed for? Is there an area for the bigger kids to play footie?
stella_fan26 03-01-2009, 11:20 Hi on the radio just before christmas I heard a new play area was opening called monkey business at valley centertainment ?
not heard or seen anything since, ?
thanks
Beakerzoid 03-01-2009, 12:23 Yup, it is almost ready to open (17th January apparantly). It is the top floor area of what used to be Club Wow, with the new restaurants underneath it (Flaming Dragon, Nandos, etc). Keep an eye on http://www.monkey-bizness.co.uk/contact_sheffield.html for further news
stella_fan26 03-01-2009, 17:51 Thankyou for that, thats great :)
joanne5600 06-01-2009, 11:48 as anyone applied for the vip tickets
stella_fan26 06-01-2009, 12:00 omg, Ive just seen, children 3 years and older is £5.95 each and £1 for adults
children 1-3 £4.95
If I went it would be £18.85 just to get in, thats without food or drink!!!!!!!!!
dont think ill be going often,
most play areas now do a deal of entry and meal for £5 each after school
wow them price are a bit steep compared to other play area/centres.
i was going to take my daughter but don't think i will be now.
Thanks for posting the info up stella_fan26.
stella_fan26 06-01-2009, 12:30 dont think they will do that well , Alphabet zoo is reasonably close to it and thats only £3.50 and adults are free, there is mega kids close by aswell, thats only £2.00 and again adults are free.
Think it will be a quiet place unless they bring out a deal , I wouldnt mind £5.95 if it includes a childs meal aswell, and also if adults were free because we spend money on coffee / tea whilst in there anyway so why charge ?
yeh, I was going to let my sons have there join b-day party there until I saw the prices that is!!!!
Little Buzz 06-01-2009, 12:42 the sooner they open and stop playing that annoying advert on the radio the better.
Lulupinkstar 06-01-2009, 13:03 How much?!. Crikey, I'd rather go abit further afield and go to Jungle Mania, it's ony £2.75.. bargain!
stella_fan26 06-01-2009, 13:09 plus jungle mania have a reward card, you get 1 stamp every time you visit and after 8 you get 1 free entry :)
how can they justify those prices, i won't be going there then!
Little Buzz 06-01-2009, 13:27 They've got a few branches already it seems.
Dave h-j 06-01-2009, 19:13 Ouch - I though playspace @ ranmoor was expensive at 4.95 after school/weekends!!
Having to pay for adults seems a bit crazy, they surely pay for themselves through coffee/tea/snack sales... Doubt we'll be going, probably stick to early playspace @ home and jungle mania if heading over meadowhall way...

It's blummin FREEZIN in there.
I went today and it was so cold we didn't stay the full time, couldn't feel my toes. Still got charged full price though :(
simo1432 11-01-2009, 20:22 Hi everybody just a quick thread to let you know what's new for 2009 at Kidz Kingdom. We still have our toddler activity sessions on a Tuesday and a Thursday mornings at 11am which are proving to be very popular and great fun for the kids, parents and staff.
We continue to do our 'MEALDEALS' from 3.30pm weekdays which include admission and any kids meal for £5.
On a Wednesday morning we have introduced our 'COFFEE MORNING' where we offer a free regular tea or coffee to accompanying adults between 9.30 and 11am.
We have also introduced reduced rate admission for registered childminders at £2.25 per child with unlimited play!(please contact us if you require further information)
Why not have a look at our website with information on our up and coming events throughout the year at www.kidzkingdomplay.co.uk
We are also introducing a great new range of coffees for the adults to indulge!
visit as a customer and leave as a friend!:)
I can only appologise as an employee on behalf of the company, the heating system currently installed was not sufficient enough as first thought by the managers this is due to be changed very shortly and hopefully on your next visit will be much for to your satisfaction.
visit as a customer and leave as a friend!:)
Awwww, that's a nice way to put it!
Thanks for the update, that's all handy to know. We'll be back soon.

Also wouldn't recommend having food as whenever I have been in it is slow in coming, the bread is hard or they haven't got full stock in and it is generally crap.
bones123 14-01-2009, 16:02 pirate ship is good toddler group 4 times a week as well
I've never been to Tots to Tens but I have been to Space Funzone which skippy says is owned by the same people. I wasn't very impressed. The place seemed shabby compared to the newer play centres we have been to. It looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a while and the toilets were yucky too.
Hi we have been to the fun zone, only few times as it is really great for my 18 month old. whereas like wacky Warehouses and playmania are for the older ones!
might have to have a look at the pirate ship and toddler groups there.
bones123 15-01-2009, 05:19 hi the toddler group ie tus+thurs 10-11.30 and wed+frid 1-3.30 hope that helps
x-GiGgLeS-x 17-01-2009, 07:06 Hi I was just wondering if anyone has gone down here yet and what they think.
bones123 17-01-2009, 08:10 hi its not opened yet end of month now and the price is think said under 2s or under 3s 3.95 or 4.95 and over the price is 5.95 hope that helps
cosywolf 17-01-2009, 08:33 Outrageous prices! And paying for under 2s is mean. Someone else will have to report back on this one. I can't see us ever going in.
bones123 17-01-2009, 08:37 hi now the 5.95 is wright not sure about the other price but i was goin the phones r not set up yet, and they didnt have the staff they need edthat y its not open yet ,
cosywolf 17-01-2009, 08:44 I hope the prices for tiny ones is wrong. Under 2s just don't get enough out of it really to pay. Or am I just a skinflint, LOL
bones123 17-01-2009, 08:55 well im been goin 2 pirate ship and they do toddler group there and price is 2.95 and if child not walking its free
£6 seems very expensive to me! Most are around £3 or £4. Cosywolf, I don't think you are a skinflint. I don't mind paying for my under 2 but I always think they should have a cheaper price for toddlers. Sounds like this place does have a cheaper price for toddlers but it's more than the price that most other places charge full stop! Can't see us visiting either if the prices are going to stay that high!
x-GiGgLeS-x 19-01-2009, 07:20 I cant see us visiting this place either if its that price. My little one is only just 1 so why should we pay that price when he wouldnt get out of it as much as others anyway?
Who is going to go and see for us?
bones123 19-01-2009, 07:22 i mite goim a childminder so at end off year i can claim it back it will go through me but need to no wot its like and y the prices are high
bones123 19-01-2009, 09:06 hi all i have just phoned monkey business up to find out prices here goes
under 1 free
1-3 £4.95
4-12 £5.95
adults £1 each
hope this helps everybody
That would be £12 for my two kids and us to go in without even a cuppa.... no thanks! And in 8 months it would be £14!
We usually have a cup of tea and a bottle of juice for each person so at £1 each at least that would be £16 or £18 for two hours.
I think we'll buy a years pass for the butterfly house instead.
Paying for adults!! To say there are already a lot of playcentres about, I can't see how they are making themselves competitive. We certainly won't be going and I can imagine other people getting there and hearing the price and that you have to pay for adults and deciding not to go too. Perhaps someone could refer them to this thread!
simo1432 19-01-2009, 19:41 Hi Skippy06 which place is owned by the people who own funzone?? Hope you are not refering to Kidz Kingdom as it is owned by 2 local sisters. They have a wide range of food available for a playcentre with all items always stocked.

Unless they throw in a banquet of bacon butties and Mary Poppins flies down to your house that Friday and babysits while you go for a drink, I won't be paying that.

If you read the posts a bit higher up you'll see Skippy was refering to Tots to Tens in Hillsborough. I like Kidz Kingdom. It always seems very clean and I find the staff friendly. Must confess we do tend to go to Runaround now though as I think it's easier having the toddler area all in one bit.
cosywolf 19-01-2009, 21:17 Unless they throw in a banquet of bacon butties and Mary Poppins flies down to your house that Friday and babysits while you go for a drink, I won't be paying that.
Pretty much my response, too :hihi::hihi:

thats disgusting! I certainly wouldn't want to pay a fiver for my 2 year old, shes only just learnt to walk, and certainly can't climb around! I don't mind a pound or so for her to go in a small toddler area.
I hope by adults paying it means they can go on the equipment to 'help' their child! :hihi:
Mind you I don't know about these things, we don't go anymore as I'm sick of arguing why I'm not paying for a 4 year old to go in, when he's quite blatantly sat in a wheelchair. The last place we tried actually implied that we were making it up so we d save £3 :loopy:

That's awful!
We had a less traumatic experience, though nonetheless argumentative, the rather full on woman charging for entry to Rother Valleys play space wanted to charge the 12 year old who was with me too, not just the two 3 year olds.
No matter what I said, she was adamant that she had to charge. I was just about to ask for the manager when she finally backed off, but somewhat rudely.
Something to keep in mind for anyone who goes.
The 12 year old is one of those 12 going on 20 ones, too old to play on an adventure frame in her opinion and had clearly said she didn't want to play on there. The woman also insinuated I was lying and that I planned to sneak her in unpaid so she could go and have a riot, since apparently that's what many people do. So she based her decision to charge me entirely on her own experiences, not on the child or my annoyed refusal.
simo1432 21-01-2009, 07:45 I cant believe they would even try to charge you for your child when he is in a wheelchair. We would gladly welcome you at Kidz Kingdom where there would certainly be no charge and if you come on a Tuesday or Thursday at 11am (if he is not yet at school of course)we do parent and child activities free of charge.
Would be lovely to see you there.
BeightonBabe 21-01-2009, 11:48 Please consider Beighton lifestyle centre if you need a venue, esp good for a traditional party with musical chairs and pass the parcel type themes...contact the centre on 0114 2132160. Its on High St Beighton, has a community cafe, bookable rooms and compimentary therapists for you to book. We are a charity and have already hosted quite a few kids parties.
x-GiGgLeS-x 02-02-2009, 06:37 Has no one been to the new one at Centertainment?
Yes, i was there on Saturday. It's a huge place! Bit pricey to get in though. £4.95 for under 5's, £5.95 for over 5's and £1 for adults.
Because it's big though even though it was busy it didn't seem it. Saying that, the queues for food and drink was just plain silly but apparently they are opening another drinks bar this week.
Lots for kids to do, as well as playing they had face painting, drawing and painting and crafts :)
bones123 08-02-2009, 07:38 does anybody no wot time it opens on a sunday thanks (monkey business) and is it alrite for a 12 year thanks
caramelbunny 08-02-2009, 09:50 Has anyone been to Monkey Bizness at Centretainment?
At £4.95 entry plus £1 per adult I'd like to see if anyone has been. We usually go to Easy Tigers in Chesterfield, my little un is 19months, so we get to play inside all things with him, some other places we've been parents weren't really expected to participate so much, and the added bonus is that it's only £3.95.
If I'm going to pay £7 and maybe be limited to 90minutes if it's busy I'd better be pretty damn good!
Any experiences?
Thanks
CB
w.monkey-bizness.co.uk/about.html
If you look at the end of the Birthday party venure thread/soft play, which is a few threads down the page, people have talked about Monkey Bizness there. Most people have said they wouldn't go as the prices are too high but I think one person has been and commented on it.
I've been.
Yes it is expensive but it is a huge place. I have always been to Junglemania and this is about 4 times as big which means although it's busy it doesn't really feel like it.
They have the usual climbing stuff and slides etc... but also have separate areas for face painting and arts and crafts all included in the price. The main problem was queueing for food and drink but apparently they were opening another area this week. They also do proper lattes and cappuccinos if you're a coffee fan ;)
I would recommend it.
bones123 08-02-2009, 16:03 hi ive just come back with my 12year old son and 2 of is friends yes its expensive we stayed for 2 and ahalf hours and it was a little busy but the kids loved it so it was worth it 2 keep them happy for a while
x-GiGgLeS-x 09-02-2009, 07:46 Well we did end up going to see what it was like. It is big and there is lots to do and onceyour in the kids can make things or have their faces painted also but it is expensive really. The kids enjoyed it but i doubt we will be going again the prices are a joke really. I feel sorry for any family who would like to take 3 children there over 1 because it would cost a fortune and thats without and drinks or dinner. There is quite afew different places where you could get food and drink. When we went it was busy but I think its just everyone trying it out. I dont think it will stay busy for long
Hi,
Just wondered if anyone knows of a small soft play place in Sheffield. I have a just turned 2 yr old and a 5 month old and would like to be able to take them to a soft play place on my own in the week rather than the weekend with my husband. It seems most places are pretty big and a 2 yr old still needs supervising quite a lot so not practical with the 5 month old in tow. Ideally need somewhere I can just watch my elder son whilst sitting with my younger son!
Have been going a bit stir crazy in this freezing weather. I try to get out as much as possible but it's soooo cold!
Any other ideas of places to take 2 kids on my own with a small age gap would be greatly appreciated too!
Ta very much
Alyson
All the playcentres I have been to have a small bit for toddlers but they also have the big frames that my lo always decides he must go on therefore I have to go on with him. Of the ones I have been to I would suggest Runaround at Halfway. The toddler bit is all in one section with a variety of things to do so that should keep his attention and keep him contained. In other places where you have to move from one toddler bit to the next my lo just runs of to the big stuff. Here he will stay in the toddler bit for quite a while before he decides he must go on the big frames! You can also sit in the toddler bit with your baby which many people do.
As for other places I'm always trying to think of new things to do! Do you go to any mother and baby groups as there are often people there with multiple children.
Graves Park is good because it has the animals, the playground and the cafe and it's free! Although they have donations tins.
x-GiGgLeS-x 11-02-2009, 07:19 I would say Tots to tens is quite small compared to the ones I go to. Its near the dog racing ground in Hillsborough
This is probably too far away unless you live in the North of Sheffield - but Jelly Beans at Springfield Mill at Denby Dale would probably be ideal. http://www.springfield-mills.co.uk/childrens_playcentre.htm
Space fun zone at hillsborough (next to co-op) is quite small and there's an area for smaller kids with tables right next to it, so you can sit and have a coffee while the kids play and still see them.
SpeedDemon 11-02-2009, 10:26 Play Time on Kent Road / Nicholson Road at Meersbrook is good. They used to do toddler sessions every morning, not sure if they still do. If you google it, I'm sure it will come up with a phone number or something. It's not too big, so u can sit n have a coffee while they play :)
Wow!
This is my first time using this forum and I'm amazed at all your fab responses! There's plenty for me to look into!
Thanks loads!
princessfluf 13-02-2009, 11:37 We went to the new play centre Monkey Bizness at centertainment after hearing all the hype and can only say it was a major let down.
It was really expensive and parents have to pay to get in. Was quite rough around the edges, seemed like they had tried to do everything on the cheap. The toilets were filthy and looked like they had been there since the old club wow days. They had been advertising Sky TV & comfy relaxation area for parents to enjoy while kids were playing but all they had was some sofa's. When we asked where T.V area was they said they hadn't had any delivered due to the snow, they opened in January, the snow was only around last week!!!
They also do kids parties but at nearly £15 a head i doubt they will be over run with requests.
On the whole it was quite rubbish :(
we looked into going there for my son's birthday, and to be honest the £15 per head party price did put us off. We ended up going to jungle mania and all the kids had a great time and the staff where fantastic as always.
looks like we made the right decision.
CorkerSWFC 13-02-2009, 11:55 We went there the other day with my 3 so you can imagine how much it cost, its way to expensive for what it is, they could at least do a family ticket if you have got a few kid's.
Defo won't be going back any time soon.
We were supposed to have been going bowling which we worked out would have been cheaper even at peak time.
CorkerSWFC 13-02-2009, 11:59 We went to alphabet zoo a few months back and the kids loved it a lot more there and its no where near as big.
princessfluf 13-02-2009, 12:08 I dont mind paying premium prices if its for something a bit different. Camelot in Rotherham near B&Q is fab and reasonable. Just dont see why Monkey Bizness can justify chargin that much when they aren't offering anything thats different to the rest
Delinquent 13-02-2009, 16:15 I tried Monkey Buziness with my little one the other day.
I found it was expensive. £4.95 for under 4 and £5.95 for 4+. Babies free. Adults £1.
However it is a big place, has 3 play area's and adults are able to play with their children in the area's too. My little one loved it and so did i, we had lots of fun. But if your taking your little one every week as i normally do to Jungle Mania its too much money to play and eat, especially if more than one child. If they lowered the prices then it would be a great place for the kids to go.
The seating areas i thought were adequate. Leather sofa's and dining tables, plenty to go at.
I didn't use the toilet but my nan did and she thought they were nice, as they had equipment for young children to use the toilet.
It does do meals and drinks similar to Jungle Mania prices.
I think its worth trying to see what you think but not worth going weekly if you have more than one kiddie! :)
I noticed they did a toddler group and kids eat free with an adult main meal on friday and saturdays. They have a website, i found it on google.
VinceNeil 17-02-2009, 19:47 Do they open Sundays at all?
If adults have to pay to get in, does that mean they also get to play on the fun equipment?
shells2909 17-02-2009, 19:58 I took my little boy who's 14 months old and he loved it....plus because he's not really walking yet i had to carry him round the playcentre (in the ball pit, down the slides) was great fun!! I went a week after it opened and to it seemed to me like the staff were still getting to grips with the place. The entry prices are quite expensive, especially as the adults have to pay too (dont even get a coffee either lol) It was good as a one off but i couldnt afford to go every week
Disturbed 23-02-2009, 17:43 Anyone know where the mother and baby groups are in the richmond, woodthorpe and stradbroke areas. My daughter is nearly 2 so for around that age.
Thankyou :):)
waynejnr 23-02-2009, 19:09 theres a really good one in woodhouse village called twinkles, if its close enough for you!
summertimeuk 23-02-2009, 19:15 One at handsworth
There is one in the southern light church at woodhouse every tuesday and thursday 10-12 which is really nice and friendly and them there is the new "world of wild playcentre" at handsworth that do toddler mornings every day 10-12 am
oldlady1980 08-03-2009, 20:28 just wondering wat u thought of it as i am thinking of having a party 4 my 5 year old there. any views would b great.
Hi,
I've been. It's really nice.
A nice big play area and good toddler area. It's always been nice and clean whenever i've been and the food is nice too!
Thread merged AGAIN, please try to make use of the shortcuts folks.
Can anyone recommend a good venue for a 5th birthday party. Done the usual ball pools etc and last year went to Planet Pot which was really good. Looking for something a bit different this year, probably going to be approx 12 kids.
cainedkaty 26-04-2009, 10:16 whats your budget?
clea_4eva 26-04-2009, 11:51 pirate ship?
laughalot01 26-04-2009, 12:13 i took my son to monkey bizness yesterday he really enjoyed it what about there
cainedkaty 26-04-2009, 12:15 If you and the parents of the other children can travel then i'd suggest here:
http://www.sundownadventureland.co.uk/childrens-birthday-parties.htm
We took our kids there a few weeks ago, they are 5 and 3 and they loved it and want parties there. It is absolutley amazing and all the rides are perfect for young ones.
freaklikeme 26-04-2009, 19:24 I think the ski village does childrens parties with some activities. Do you have a local leisure centre? Some do kiddies pool parties. Bowlings always poplular too.
anniemee 26-04-2009, 19:28 Camelot Play Castle at Rotherham is really good.
we went to a tobaggan party at xscape near leeds a few weeks ago which was very good and a bit different
laineyiow 26-04-2009, 22:37 What's wrong with having a party at home? When my daugohter was growing up we had loads of parties at home with her friends plus ones at Burger King/McDonalds/church halls etc. but she always enjoyed the ones we had at home - I even hired a clown one year. I made it a buffet type party and the children were able to eat their food whilst sitting on the floor - picnic style. I think we even managed to get about 15 children in the house one year and we played all the "old" style party games - pass the parcel, sardines, etc and they all truly had a lovely time. My daughter always told me that she enjoyed the parties at home more than the ones where we went to a venue.
Angels4eva 26-04-2009, 22:41 What about play bus are is it party bus
Thanks to everyone for the ideas. Where is monkey bizness and what and where are pirate ship and play bus?
Thanks again
Would love to have a party at home but unfortunately not enough room.
laughalot01 27-04-2009, 09:54 Thanks to everyone for the ideas. Where is monkey bizness and what and where are pirate ship and play bus?
Thanks again
its at the centretainment park across from the arena have a look on website
You really should check out Kidz Kingdom at Westfield - opposite Direct Cars. Their party packages - four different price ranges depending on what your needs are - have a reputation for being fantastic value for money. Check out their website. Their telephone number is 0114 2475989. I'm sure you'll not be disappointed if you book.
mrsporty 27-04-2009, 10:18 We run children's parties. We can either hire you a venue, we use CDYST in Crosspool, or you can hire a church hall and we'll do the entertainment. Our parties consist of lots of imaginative play and ball skills it is suitable for both boys and girls and we come very highly recommended please see our website for further details. www.playballyorkshire.co.uk
If thats not what your interested in then i know that Weston park museum now do parties and have many different packages.
sheff bantam 27-04-2009, 11:48 Hire a local hall / community center & get Sparky Marky the best childrens entertainer around. sparkymarky . co.uk
White Horse 27-04-2009, 21:42 If your looking to hire the venue and provide your own entertainment/party then The Institute in Heeley might be suitable. Give Heeley Development Trust a call on 0114 2500613. The rates are pretty reasonable for childrens parties.
Camelot Play Castle at Rotherham is really good.
I agree. It's family business and they make the child feel really special. Had my daughter's 5th birthday party there and she was the princess and loved it. There's dressing up clothes to choose from too. Very reasonable.
Check out netmums.com for loads of other ideas too.
Good luck!
Can recommend the Party Bus. My youngster really enjoyed that!
Parks outside your house (convenient for kids needing loo!) lots of fun and entertainment....party food on top deck of bus...so no mess indoors to clear up.
We thought it was good value for money.
redclaire30 06-05-2009, 15:14 I thought id let you know that we are doing a 2 4 1 offer !! Monday - Friday 9.30-6.30 Term Time.
So why not pop in and dont forget if were not busy then you can stay for as long as you please. Sit back relax and enjoy a nice coffee while the kiddies wear them selfs out.
Hope to see you soon x

Shanksy21 15-05-2009, 13:05 You can have a pool birthday party at hillsborough Lesiure Centre. Its cheap and the kids love it.
A.B.Yaffle 21-05-2009, 21:10 We've taken our 10-month-old to Monkey Bizness four times in the last few weeks and he has really enjoyed it.
We have taken him to Space Fun Zone at Hillsborough twice this week and both times he has had toys thrown at him and been smacked in the face by older children.
tired mummy 28-08-2009, 08:50 is funzone good for my 17mth old or are there any better places near s5?
Shef_Fitness 28-08-2009, 09:00 We took a 16 month old to fun zone, and he spent 90 minutes sat on a small Rocking Cow just watching the world go by.
There is a small section for toddlers, so he or she should be OK
The big play stuff is more aimed at older kids.

Yes you can go onto the playstuff/climbing frames yourself, however you have to careful you don't get stuck.
Remember the gaps that the kids climb through are ideal for kids, however on many occasions overweight dads/mums find the gaps too small:hihi:

Its gen the 30 something dads that try to use the equipment, and find it a bit of a squeeze
The Circuit Class restarts on the 22nd September.
(Bit of a cheeky promo there)
I was shocked when McDonalds at Hillsborough got rid of there play equipment, as the kids loved it in there.
Hi, Just been to the pirate ship today, I go weekly with my 2 1/2 yr old and he loves it, its nice and clean and no matter where you sit you can always keep an eye on your child, But after talking to the manager/owner she seemed worried that theres not enough people going and she thinks people dont know where they are, So heres the address The Pirate Ship Ltd
.Unit 4
.Baxter Road
.Sheffield
.S6 1JF
Its great for the little ones and they do hot drinks and food, its £2.95 per child for 2 hours of play and theres a car park, so go and visit it! :hihi:
Hi I'm thinking of holding a 5th birthday at Monkey biz @ centertainment. Any recommendations or comments welcome? Has anyone been? I usually do Easy tigers but we're getting a bit bored with that although it's brilliant.
Birthday is in January so must be indoors.
Cheers mesen
Bexstars 08-12-2009, 16:24 I can recomend monkey bizness although I have never held or attended a party there, I go once a month and its always clean and is a great place for kids to play and lots of space to run around as its huge
Thanks Bex
That'll do nicely then.

monstermummy 08-12-2009, 19:04 I have been twice now at Monkey Business and was not impressed at all.
The play area was dirty, tissues, crisps, crisp wrappers all over the place - the tables were also dirty, the staff could not care less that loads of children were running about without socks on and the queues to get anything were massive.
Pinkmiss 10-12-2009, 12:23 Playspace at ranmore is excellent! very clean, very friendly and i think its free!
nikkit285 10-12-2009, 12:24 I love monkey biz i used to work as a nanny and took the kids quite often when it was rubbish weather.
Also as adults can go on the play area its a great way of keeping an eye on the kids (and having a good time yourself)
rainbow_maid 15-01-2010, 19:36 I have just had a party at Monkey bizness and have had an appalling time. I paid for 10 children it was 12.99 a head and they didn't get much to show for it. I then paid £6 a head for their 'play and eat' deal for older siblings who weren't part of the party to get in. The meal was inadequate and very small portion size. I complained to the manager who was argumentative and disinterested, and her attitude was 'tough'. I insisted they provide some sandwiches to the older children, they were still hungry! At first she said no but reluctantly agreed. I was going to book my son's party there but no chance now, overpriced, poor service, rude staff, not a happy party outcome at all. :(

We had a party there for my son in December, the actual play area was really really quiet so the kids had the place to themselves more or less. It cost me just over hundred quid for 10 kids (younger ones) we got it a bit cheaper cos it was a friday apparently more expensive at weekend. The kids absolutely loved it but have to agree the food wasnt much cop, and not enough. A few cocktail sausages, pizza, chips and fishfingers - which lasted all of 5 mins!! i asked for some extra sausages to be told there werent any more (even tho there was a party booked after us) i mean let's face it a few extra sausages arent going to break the bank are they. Another annoying thing was Joe's name was spelt wrong on his welcome poster (spelt Jospeh - not rocket science surely???) The party bags were ok, had a few sweets, couple of toys in etc - the kids loved them which was the main thing!!!
lulu3abby 25-01-2010, 17:43 Hi to all- hoping someone knows of any place other than Western Park Museum that will do a arts and crafts type birthday party for a 4 year old. Happy to do our own catering- would have it at home, but not enough space.
Thanks for any suggestions:)

And put some very nice people (one very close to me) out of their jobs.
You didnt like Junglemania rainbowmaid so not sure which one to choose from your side of the City as Halabaloo's did themselves no favours on a thread about Alphabets demise by advertising their services and one of their employees/ex employees started the thread off
On this side where I live there are a couple of reasonable ones but the travel is probably too far
punkbarbie87 28-03-2010, 14:10 Hi

Hi
Just to let you know monkey bizness isn't that expensive on weekdays during term time. Its only £3 for their toddler time...avoid it during the hols/weekends as it is busy and expensive!

Alphabet Zoo has closed down as the couple who ran it are going bankrupt!!
There was a thread about this but I think the Mods closed it down cos there was some arguments going on within the thread by various people.
tim schafer 02-05-2010, 11:33 Hi the Handsworth Parish centre just up from the big ASDA has some great rooms you can hire on the weekend - the big hall holds up to 100 people so its great for kids to run around in put up a bouncy castle play some games etc its just £20 an hour to hire or there is a second room called the nunnery that holds up to 40 and is £15 per hour. there is a large grassed area outside that you can use too. Free parking for up to 36 cars
ring 0114 2692537 or look on http://www.orh.org
honeyb35 07-06-2010, 20:51 Which soft play areas are still open - looks like a few of these have closed down! My eldest is still on school holidays so I thought I'd take them to one tomorrow before she goes back.
We usually go to hullaballoos, which we love, but want to try a different one ideally. Preferably in the North Sheffield area too. It needs to be suitable for a 9 year old and a 3 year old.
Kayleigh43 08-06-2010, 18:03 Hullaballoos is dirty with rude staff not a place i would choose to go again
honeyb35 08-06-2010, 18:06 Hullaballoos is dirty with rude staff not a place i would choose to go again
Why have your only two posts been about this place, do you have some grudge against it?
Kayleigh43 08-06-2010, 18:13 not at all just find it a bad place for children, i dont like it you do x
Mentalmomma 09-06-2010, 06:52 Hydro Kids, Hullaballoo, Monkey Business, Pirate Ship all Jungle Gyms.
macdonalds, Pizza Hut etc all do parties for kids at a price, as do Ice Sheffield, Super Bowl or you can book Odeon Cinema for parties etc...
Big Picnic in a local Park with a childrens entertainer or hire a hall and have a proper kids games, clown, balloons and jelly day!

Go on you can tell us, Did you have a bad experience there?
Were you fired or turned down for a job?
Or maybe one of the staff doesn't want to play anymore?
Has anyone recently had a party at the Megacentre? We've not been before but the format sounds good - only thing putting me off is that the party is only for 1.5 hours whereas usually it is for 2 hours. I'm in between the Megacentre and Runaround. Any views?

HI my work colleague had her daughter's party at the Megacentre in January and she said it was very very good from beginning to end and the staff did a great job!
We had my son's party at Runaround and we have been to 2 other parties there and have been happy with them. Plenty of food, a few games at the toddler party and the staff are polite and helpful.

I now know it is forward for kids and have been there several times...my DDs really enjoy it.
Joannes78 23-02-2011, 06:55 Hi, I think its called Forward for Kids - Ive been a couple of times with my 3yr old - its quite nice as not too big and doesnt get too busy either (but this may be because its not been open long and I go when kids are at school). As its not very big its not that good for bigger children - my 7 year old niece prefers the bigger playcentres. Staff are friendly, always cleaning away cups/plates and keep it clean. Food nice and has papers/magazines fo you to read. Has a carpark. Its on the industrial estate near where the old Asda used to be. I think its £3.50 duing school time and then £4.75 after 3pm and weekends.
jellybellybean 23-02-2011, 20:35 I often go here with my daughter who's nearly 2, as mentioned above we like it because its small and generally quieter than the other pay centres so ideal for my daughter with her only being young.
I love it there. It's my new favourite. Agree that it's probably better for smaller kids. My lo is 15 mths and really enjoys herself. The cafe is lovely too ;)
Finally got to visit this playcentre today, I have to agree it is smaller than others but this made it ideal for my DD who is 2, to feel happy to have a go on everything!
Was extremely clean, the staff very helpful and the coffee was really nice and a reasonable price!
We will be going back again soon!!
eeejay174 14-08-2011, 15:05 Hi, just wanted to let everyone know that the new inddor playcentre in meersbrook has opened. Took dd there today, its brilliant, cant recomend it enough, loads of stuff for the children to do. It has a 'rides' area, free, a baby area, toddler area, sensory 'comfy' zone, sports area, mini quads track and all the usual clmbing/slide stuff. tried the cafe, food very nice, not over priced and staff were lovely. £6 a child, so not hideously expensive, dd has had a great time, must be said!!
Its behind stokes painters on little london road, so u can get to it via chesterfield rd or abbeydale rd.
Enjoy!!
Just thought I'd mention the new playmania at Little London Road. I've been today with my little girl and it's brilliant! Great stuff for little ones to do and for the bigger kids there is stacks to do too. Was pricey to get in at £5.95 cos its not term time but well worth it. Food seems really great, good facilities for toilets and changing, very nice and clean too.
Is that the new play arena? Looked at website and considering taking DD 1 and 2 sometime in the next few weeks.
Yes, it's brilliant. By far the best one that I've been too. Bit pricey I suppose but well worth it. Have fun!
Have been this morning/afternoon!!! It was fantastic!!! by far the best playcentre we have been too. Was worth the money!!! :-)

Its called Forward for kids but my niece calls it "The shape one" as there are shapes on its logo.
honeyb35 11-10-2011, 21:55 Does anyone know any halls or similar in the S35 area (High Green / Chapeltown or close) which are suitable to hire for a childrens party? I'm looking for somewhere for my daughters 5th birthday. Don't want a play area as shes only just started school, so I think it will be a whole class effort, as she doesn't really have 'friends' yet, therefore need something affordable!
Don't no if its still there but alphabet zoo near meadowhall is good.
Play Arena: good impression, clean, lots to do, friendly staff on whole. Negatives: quite a few electronic toys not working, food only "big" meals for children, needs to have basic sandwiches and hot dogs. Will be back
Hi.
Forward for fun is on the old Asda site at Hansdworth, and i must say its brilliant for up to about 5/6 years old. Any older may get slightly board, but our yummy mummy group goes every Friday morning to the Todler group. The kids and us mums love it.

shells2909 16-01-2012, 20:19 Just thought i'd let everyone know about the "offer" Monkey Bizness has at the minute. The next time you visit you pay full price (cost me £9.20 for my 2 and 4 year old and me) but then you get an offer on your receipt which gives you 50% off your next visit - our next visit then cost £4.50. You get a receipt everytime you purchase something from the cafe too. The vouchers are only valid for 6 days after purchase but i've used them a couple of times now. Not usually a big fan of Monkey Bizness but it makes a visit there cheaper than most of the other play centres when using the voucher xxx
