Ok this should be good, and a little... nasty, but has anyone had any bizarre cravings while pregnant? I knew a lady who used to lick coal when she was pregnant.
Can you beat that?

Jabberwocky 31-08-2006, 11:41 PM Ok this should be good, and a little... nasty, but has anyone had any bizarre cravings while pregnant? I knew a lady who used to lick coal when she was pregnant. Can you beat that? Titian 31-08-2006, 11:51 PM My cravings didn't involve eating as it was a slight problem during pregnancy. I did have a strong craving for the smell of damp basements though and found myself tempted to lick the walls. Jabberwocky 31-08-2006, 11:54 PM They say that its an instinctive urge to get extra vitamins or minerals into the body. To help with making the baby. Titian 31-08-2006, 11:57 PM yes, that's true. I shall now go and look up the healing properties of fust. :gag: cosywolf 01-09-2006, 10:28 AM I know someone who chewed on natural sponges constantly, which I found very, very odd. Lucky me, I just wanted bananas. And lots of 'em! Zebra 01-09-2006, 01:13 PM Salt and vinegar crisps, anything pickled - especially onions, pickled onion crisps, onion and cucumber in vinegar - you get the picture! Hels 01-09-2006, 01:53 PM I didn't crave anything bizzare, but as someone who went totally off milk and anything milky about 25 years ago, it was strange that throughout this pregnancy I was craving all things milky - milk shakes, porridge, rice pudding, youghurt drinks etc tinkabel 01-09-2006, 03:43 PM pickled onions with chocolate spread *yummy* i was also a fellow sponge chewer/sucker!! Till Man 01-09-2006, 03:46 PM The current Mrs Till developed a craving for Ribena in all its' full sugar glory. Bit of a problem since pregnancy sent her diabetic! babychickens 01-09-2006, 05:03 PM no cravings at all here, i went the other way - i actually didn't want to eat really anything at all, as everything made me vomit. i forced myself to eat the bear minimum of fruit and veg, took vitamins, and otherwise subsisted from week 3 of pregnancy until 2 days after giving birth on the blandest foods available. actually, i had so much trouble with being sick and developing an aversion to food that i was prescribed high calorie/high fat milkshakes (like the ones that anorexics are tricked into drinking) as they were small enough that i could force them down and digest some before vomiting it back up. 600 calories in half a pint, no less! now i'm trying to shift the half a stone of pure lard that's still here 3 months later. acedj 02-09-2006, 02:48 PM my craving was the smell of wet sponges just use to sniff it for ages and ages littlestarshine 02-09-2006, 02:56 PM with my first son it was carrots and spare ribs in syrup, my second it was anything really meaty that i cud sink my teeth in,, like chicken legs and steak (not together!) with my third (a girl) it was sponges,,, dont ask my why,, i just used to sit in the bath chewing on a sponge but it wud have to be full of water so i cud squeeze it out with my teeth,, im pregnant again this time is meaty things (yep agian) and dime bars!! the wonders of pregnancy! Footiefreak 07-10-2006, 11:37 PM My only craving with my first child was chapattis (a little bland I know!) and I used to send my other half to the local indian take-away nearly every night for about 5! With my second it was chestnuts and pounds of them, but unfortunately the craving started about June (about 2 months into the pregnancy) and of course the chestnuts don't hit the shops til October, it nearly drove me mad! I used to dream about them and I could literally taste them! Anyway they eventually arrived in the shops and I ate pounds of them even though they gave me chronic heart burn! - on the opposite side to the cravings, in my 2nd pregnancy, I couldn't bear scented smells, anything that smelt 'nice' like perfume, washing power, air fresheners, conditioners etc etc I could have been sick. Shopping in the supermarket was a nightmare down the washing powder aisle!! I had to have EVERYTHING unscented which is so not me!! I'm back to normal now(though it took a while after the baby arrived) except I could still gip when I smell washing powder but I think it's psychological cause the baby will be two in February!!! MrsCarter 09-10-2006, 12:27 PM Hi Everyone. I'm 37 weeks pregnant and have had a MAJOR craving for Sherbert Fountains and Swizzle Lollies :-) I'm also partial to large glasses of fizzy pop - mainly Coke which is something that I normally cannot stomach :-) mrsb73 10-10-2006, 06:55 PM Hiya, I'm nearly 25 weeks, and not had cravings in particular but love fizzy pop, esp really cold sprite & 7 up, and I too have been eating fizzy and sour sweets. I had to stop using scented washing powders and softeners from about 8 weeks and stil cannot stand the smell of them, but I'm just about Ok with deodorant and normal handwash. Strange ain't it? NatalieSheff 13-10-2006, 03:47 PM crispy seaweed and the smell of that really strong old fashioned soap - cant remember name. i used to stand and smell it in tescos - how embarrassing! sarah1 21-11-2006, 12:52 PM Whilst pregnant with my son, I craved pork scratchings dipped in sea food sauce..Followed by umpteen rennies to get rid off the heartburn..:D :D NatalieSheff 29-01-2007, 09:56 PM do people really have coal cravings or is it old wives tale? Zebra 30-01-2007, 12:37 AM crispy seaweed and the smell of that really strong old fashioned soap - cant remember name. i used to stand and smell it in tescos - how embarrassing! Was it Wright's Coal Tar Soap? medusa 30-01-2007, 12:56 AM Big sis knows a woman who ate birthday cake candles and the plaster she'd scraped off the living room walls throughout her pregnancy. sauerkraut 30-01-2007, 08:52 AM do people really have coal cravings or is it old wives tale? With my 1st i wanted crispy seaweed and with this one its mashed pots and white bread mmmmm My cousin did. This was years ago in the days of coal bunkers..she could be found sitting out in the coal bunker literally eating the coal. Yuk. My first two pregnancies (girls) I craved maltesers constantly. The third (boy) I was too sick the whole time to crave anything. dramadiva 30-01-2007, 09:57 AM I had a thing for tinned fruit - not the expensive 'in its own juices' stuff, it had to be the cheap nasty in synthetic syrup stuff. I don't actually like it, but for a few months it was all i ate... NatalieSheff 30-01-2007, 02:03 PM ive been thinking about Crispy MOCK duck from Candy town for months and was really disappointed the other night when i had it :( Jess22 30-01-2007, 02:14 PM My mum craved raw ginger, she would eat big chunks of it, however the craving never went and she still does it :gag: Someone else I knew craved Avacado Jabberwocky 30-01-2007, 02:15 PM So what causes these cravings? In instinctive urge to get vitamins and minerals from bizarre things? Redissert 30-01-2007, 08:55 PM I craved the smell of a certain cheap furniture polish that I get from the little hardware shop on Newfield Green (not the nicer Mr Muscle stuff though!), smell of petrol and was sneaking whiffs of a petrol lighter (not inhaling though mind just whiffing it under my nose!), and the smell fo anything like that eg creosote (yummy, always loved that!), and another odd one- I eat the stones from the middle of peaches, necatrines and plums often spending hours gnawing on the tougher ones. Didn't eat the pips from inside the stones though! People thought I was mad. Oh and I only really smoked when drinking alcohol before preg but at bout 5 months I craved for fags which I found very odd. Didn't though. Weird what the body does. Didn't crave food! dramadiva 01-02-2007, 10:09 AM So what causes these cravings? In instinctive urge to get vitamins and minerals from bizarre things? i think it is - before i even knew i was preggers i had to have marmite on everything (enriched with folic acid) and after that it was the fruit thing. My mum craved broad beans - she even had em boiled with fish n chips! must have been the iron in them she needed NatalieSheff 01-02-2007, 03:48 PM there must be a reason for cravings like when you really need a sugary drink b4 you pass out (due to anemia etc.) or maybe its just because you CAN!!! Minesadouble 01-02-2007, 03:54 PM I craved Chalk ate loads of the stuff and still do nearly 4 yrs after - obviously this cocked my system up and had to go on iron tablets :hihi: snooze 03-02-2007, 10:25 PM nothing weird for me, but with 1st craved chicken, was veggie at the time. with boys it was minted lamb, 1st boy milkshakes also, 2nd boy hot currys, with baby no4 i craved liver, and mac ds, hate mac ds usually must have been somthing to do with the salt content. but couldnt stand the smell of fried food (chipshops:gag: ) BoroughGal 03-02-2007, 10:38 PM A lot of people on here have craved sponges - I'd be interested to know why that is, being so common? NatalieSheff 03-02-2007, 10:45 PM nothing weird for me, but with 1st craved chicken, was veggie at the time. oh god me too! been veggi years and all i can think about is chick-found a temp cure by gutting, cleaning, scrubbing and cooking one for hubby- after cutting all that gross skin, bum and yukky bits i get over it. cosmicjade26 05-02-2007, 09:13 PM I'm 35 wks pg and have the same uncontrollable urge for sponge, when i am washing the pots we use sponge and scour pads and i have to have MY sponge close by cause the urge is sooooo strong, i also like the smell of things like petrol or going into a car repair garage and smelling the air (i try to avoid the latter ones though, but for some reason i have a real big aversion for garlick YUK YUK YUK YUK. :gag: sazk23 09-05-2007, 06:06 PM bringing this thread back up. Sometimes I really fancy something like fish and chips, chocolate, fizzy pop but I don't crave them all the time (not yet anyway). Just now I really want some pop and I can't get none, I'm having to have water :( (suppose its better for us) It's really bad when you really want something but can't have it! lyndix 10-05-2007, 08:45 PM didn`t really have bizarre cravings but ate hundreds of packets of giant parma violets. I had packets of them stashed in key locations around the house(even in the bathroom) and if anyone took them i`d go mental. I knew I`d got a real problem with them when my oh stripped the bed and loads of parmaviolets flew out of the duvet cover! sazk23 10-05-2007, 11:40 PM im lovin sweets at the moment. refresher bars etc. got sum in my bag now. savin them for 2moz :D zweena 11-05-2007, 12:08 AM Fresh stuff, which is lucky. I also had a problem brushing my teeth as toothpaste made me :gag: anniec 06-08-2007, 10:05 PM Hi All, What's the weirdest thing you craved while pregnant? I had a variety with dd, first craving was haggis (I'm scottish so when she was born I lived in Glasgow and this is freely available) I then crave toast with choc spread and scrambled egg and then from about 6 months I just couldn't get enough pineapple. I'd never been a big fan of pineapple before but to this day I still love it! I hope this time it's something normal and I don't want to eat grated soap or anything lol raven13 07-08-2007, 07:20 AM I only craved right at the beginning-we're talking 5 weeks or so here. I wanted cheeseburgers and coca cola all the time. But the cravings faded after about a month and a half and I didn't get anymore! I think it just means that my little man loves all his food without bias lol. Can't wait til he starts on solid food! :D I hope you don't crave grated soap! Can't imagine that being very sustaining? I've heard about women dipping their fingers in ash and licking it too! Something about digestion? Eurgh! zweena 07-08-2007, 11:32 AM No real cravings here. In fact, I've had the entire oppposite and have really had to force myself to eat ANYTHING! To start with, I ate a huge amount of fruit but I'm not sure whether it was a craving or all I felt vaguely hungry for? And while I've obviously gained the baby weight for the past 20 weeks, it seems to have sucked the fat from the rest of my body... The other day one of my rings fell off while I was washing my hair - it's all a little strange! Not that I'm complainng, but it is comepletely different to what I expected! joi5ey 07-08-2007, 12:53 PM i havent had the same cravings all way through, i crave different things... for instance steak pie with mash, i craved a sausage butty and we didnt have any in, so i got a taxi to the asda to buy some then a taxi home. £25 for a sausage butty not bad!! recently its citrus flavoured things. such as orange callypo. dont want to eat fresh oranges as such, although there was a brief spell of them. and my mums citrus washing up liquid nearly got eaten!! baileys_mum 07-08-2007, 01:56 PM With bails at the start it was cucumber, I was eating about 3 a day.
