View Full Version : How come clubs in sheffield have gone down hill?
princess_rockchick 14-07-2004, 07:52 Come on what happened?
I remember a time when clubs and pubs where good. Had lots of choice. music was good, prices for drinks where pretty decent. so What happened to the quality of clubs in sheffield? what happened to all the good clubs?
Sheffield is in bad need of good clubs.
JonScaife 14-07-2004, 12:14 What kind of night are you looking for? If you like Rock or similar there are a million places to go. If you like Indie go to the Leadmill. If you like Trance go to Planet Zogg (although its only monthly).
Yeah - thing is with Sheffield, pretty much all aspects of clubbing are covered....however you just have to sometimes do a bit of searching because Sheffield council's development of the night time industry is so prehistoric and unsupportive that you don't see the emergence of new, cool, higher profile clubs and nights. (I don't mean in a Kingdom cool either....eg Fabric / Mint Club style)
.Zero is probably the best venue in Sheffield IMO, but i would say that. :D .....but i do seriously think that.
On a general note that is tied into this point, the day that Sheffield council actually grow up, taking in cities such as Leeds and Manchester as examples, and help develop nightlife in the city is the day that i will pass out in surprise.
I mean, on another point, if you're a young professional looking at potential cities to work, why would you choose Sheffield above Leeds and Manchester where so much is happening and just seem to ooze fun, buzz and excitement?
In order for Sheffield to liven up. The council needs to lighten up.
Agreed, the council does nothing to help with the city's social situation. The licensing laws here are a joke. Maybe the Sheffield councillors need to go out more and realise that life is supposed to be fun. Even if they don't think that, they should at least accept that the inhabitants of this city like to have fun.
I'm gutted at the mo as all of my clubbing buddies have left Sheffield and I have no one to go out with. Haven't been to UG for weeks. it's really frustrating knowing that all of these good nights are planned and I can't go. Grrrr!
Oh, and I also agree that .Zero is the best venue in sheff at the mo. It's big enough without being too big. Got a good lay out, a kick ass sound system and is always full of lovely people.
Can I just point out here that it is not councillors that make licencing decisions, it is the licencing magistrates at the court.
The council look after planning, and as far as I know their ambitions for Sheffield City Centre is mixed use residential, retail, small business and leisure. It is the dusty old judges who declare that we do not need any more nightclubs, nor anymore traditional pubs. They are also very tight with late licences.
However, as part of the licencing reform, which looks like it will take effect next year, the responsibilities for granting alcohol licences will be move to the local authority, who will follow a combination of guidelines, the city plan and local licencing policy, which will be formed after consulting various local interested parties.
So maybe next year?
Sorry, i was making assumptions there. Point taken. Thanks for letting us know who's really to blame.
andy78 ---- dont stay at home, just organise a meet up and we'll look after ya all nite..... :):):)
andyc ----- erm........the licensing dept advise the mags court along with the police, as to whether they agree/disagree with a license application, and the magistrates make a decision then.
youll find that the new licensing laws will not maketh our city, ive a funny feeling that more harder decisions will fall on our nighttime economy. :(
princess_rockchick 16-07-2004, 18:26 I just think the club scene has gone down hill, less choice these days i think. Wish we could bring back some of the old clubs, but everything has changed and that is not going to be possible. Oh well perhaps something will happen in the near future.

Green, yeah a meet up would be a good idea. think i should be braver really. It's not like like i'm scared of new people or anything. I'll have to do something, otherwise i'll just have to accept that I can't go out in sheffield, if the current situation stays the same.
andy78 - u know the score at UG, theres no big deal with going with mates etc, pm me when u have the chance and we'll organise a meet up for josh wink.

welchiewelch 22-07-2004, 13:40 THing is...bloke is right about the magistrates being the problem - a good mate of mine did a study as part of a masters or summut on the licensing battles in Sheffield between the magistrates and the council and the council have been trying to change things.
But Mr Male is right about the council on other points. For example, they use the diverse nightime economy argument in brochures etc but do not do anything to help the small man (or woman or thing). In the case of flyposting, I don't think any club promoters really want to cover the city with posters each week but the lack of low cost advertising space makes it difficult for smaller clubs. The council just seem to trumpet zero tolerance mantra without thinking that a birra compromise would help both the smaller and more experimental club nights and them as a result.
Leeds is not a good example of a thriving clubbing city. It's kind of developed a sort of clubbing tourism thing where people go from club to club just to hear whatever DJ Superpants is on and it's hard for nights to get regulars. Dunno about Manchester. Too far away.
I don't think Sheffield has anything less in terms of club scenes than any other city, (apart from actual venues which is a bit thin on the ground at the moment)..... in some ways it has a lot more.
Grass is always greener and that...A lot of it comes down to basic economics. Sheffield has one of the lowest disposable incomes out of any big city in the country which is why when the rich students go it all dies off......( don't get upset any impov. stu's.
Then there seems to be the "better days" phenomenon. Not as good as it used to be and all that......rubbish. People make a club not some big brand and not DJ Superduper. You make em happen it doesn't happen to you !!
So. Get out there and embrace, rejoice and remember we are the world we are the children we are the ones....etc...etc..and all that.
carcrash 23-07-2004, 14:58 Sheffield has 2 of the best club nights in the country with Headcharge and UG.
.Zero has done a great job in overcoming some of the problems and stigma that was attached to it over the last year.
Planet Zogg isn't my cup of tea musically but there is no denying that it is a great night out.
Sometimes it's better to look away from clubs. There is a massive party scene in Sheffield with places like The Shop and Spannered putting on consistantly good nights in a varity of places.
There are several free party sound systems who put parties on all over the place.
Look out for
Wasted.
Silver Widows
NTA
Transmission.
Must Dash.
if you are prepared to phone that number on a flyer and travel you are going to be in for a good time.
