View Full Version : Summer's over - lets celebrate Autumn.
slimsid2000 30-08-2006, 13:36 Well it is that time of year again when summer fades into Autumn (the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness according to Keats). I like summer but I also think Autumn is a great season.
So lets look forward to Halloween, Blackpool Illuminations, the smell of bonfire smoke in the air, the distant crackle of fireworks, pomegranates and Terry Wogan's toupee on Children in Need (well perhaps not the last one).
Come on cheer up - it's almost autumn.
Sorry - I'd rather hang on to summer for a bit longer. I know there are nice things about autumn - but oh, so many dark nights!

we have the whole of september yet sid!!!!
i like things about every season but summer is my fave- the long nights- sat outside the pub, lovely walks in the sun, holidays, but autumn is kind of nice when you wake up on a sunday morning and its all quiet and misty and you feel ok about having bacon sarnis and of course goin for nice walks round twenty fields with the crows calling!!
Summer lasted for like a week!
Lame.
Autumn is a beautiful time of the year, but it has an awful inevitability about it.
The days must get shorter and shorter, until it turns into Winter.
As soon as September is done, we have another five months of bleak, cold weather to endure.
As you say, we are sorely in need of those celebrations to cheer us up at that time.
Haven't had my holiday yet- don't make me think that summer's over already!

I think that what happened this Summer is that it was so hot for a few weeks that we got acclimatised to it, so now we feel cold.
The temperature at present is 72 F (22 C) which normally would be considerd a warm day, but it doesnt feel as warm somehow.
Im not willing to give up on summer just yet!
SupraSteve 30-08-2006, 14:00 (Northern hemisphere)
Spring: March, April, May
Summer: June, July, August
Autumn: September, October, November
Winter: December, January, February
So we still have just under 1.5 days of Summer left. ;)
That said, September is usually predominantly nice & warm.
slimsid2000 30-08-2006, 14:01 Strictly speaking summer lasts until 20th Sept and Autumn starts on 21st.

the distant crackle of fireworks,
Distant? Try the 50-shot repeaters that rattle your windows 2 weeks either side of November 5th. :hihi: An ex of mine was trying to make an important call once and after waiting for ages she finally got through only for a 50-shotter to start up right across the street. The poor lass couldn't hear a thing and had to hang up. Oooooh was she mad! :o :hihi:
I do kinda like Autumn though cos on the colder days I can start wearing my favourite winter coat again and I love the colours of the leaves. It's nice walking in the lower temperatures too as long as it's not raining too much. :)

Well when i first came to sheffield in 96.. It used to be hot for ages, but now you lot barely get any sunshine! A week at best! And when u do u complain about it! :hihi:
slimsid2000 30-08-2006, 14:06 Yes, some fireworks are getting a bit bad now. But haven't they banned the really loud ones a year or so ago.

Nope, you're thinking of Equinox/Solstice, I believe.

So, in meteorology for the Northern hemisphere:
spring begins by convention on March 1,
summer on June 1,
autumn on September 1 and
winter on December 1.
I used to work with a Scottish bloke who used to leave his holidays until the end of September.
He used to go back home to the Isle of Skye. He maintained the weather in Scotland was better at that time of year than during the Summer proper.
much prefer autumn parks look so much better with all that colour.
Regarding fireworks, how do the dealers let the junkies know they have a new supply around bonfire night?
With all the other fireworks going off, it must be confusing for them. :D

Is that why your avatar seems to be ranting at us? :hihi:

I quite like autumn too. I associate it with new beginnings, perhaps because of the start of the school year. Early summer is good as it is full of promise but often as we progress into August it becomes an anti-climax.
I love, love, love autumn!! Walking in the woods seeing all of the colours in the trees. I love the days when it is sunny but there is a sharpness to the air and you can wrap up and go for walks collecting conkers and reminising about soaking them in vinegar and how naughty you were if you varnished them!!!
Does anyone remember a song at school called 'Autumn days' or was it just a Liverpool school thing?

Here you go:
Autumn days, when the grass is jewelled
And the silk in a chestnut shell
Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled
All these things I love so well
So I mustn't forget
No, I mustn't forget
To say a great big thank you
No, I mustn't forget
Clouds that look like familiar faces
And winter's moon with frosted rings
Smell of bacon as I fasten up my laces
And the song the milkman sings.
Whipped–up spray that is rainbow–scattered
And a swallow curving in the sky
Shoes go comfy though they're worn out and they're battered
And the taste of apple pie.
Scent of gardens when the rain's been falling
And a minnow darting down a stream
Picked–up engine that's been stuttering and stalling
And a win for my home team
