Oh, so many lovely places around here. We need a bit more detail before we can be useful to you tho...eg, are you reliant on public transport? Do you want to walk when you get there, or sit in a pub/coffee shop and admire the view? If you do want to walk, would you like a gentle stroll by a river, a nice amble over moors, or a bit of a hike taking in some lovely wild moorland? Would you like to take in a stately home? Or a walk up through some nice parks with cafés along the way?

Whatever your needs and choice, someone on here will be able to recommend the perfect day out!

Edit: didn't read the wooded-by-a-lake bit, sorry! Oh well, I have maybe opened your eyes to other possibilities!

Ok, I'll leave the picnic-by-a-river-or-lake bit to someone else, 'cos that's not my kind of thing! :)

However, while he's up here, you might like to consider taking him on the bus out to Castleton.

There are caves (including one where you get to travel on a barge underground, and the guide moves the boat along by lying on his back and 'peddling' against the ceiling of the tunnel!) and high hills with fabulous views, and pubs n' cafes.

Honestly, if you haven't been there, it's worth the trip.
