View Full Version : Pavement by Decathlon
I am amazed again at the spectacular money wasting by the council. I have been going past decathlon and up near Staples for a while now, and it seems to have taken a lifetime for them to do the pavements.
Does anyone actually walk up there????
They have put down really expensive block paving - WHY? I never see anyone there and there are no shops there. Its just sooo annoying when the put down really bad tarmac on Eccelsall road, which no doubt they will have to replace in a year due to the high quality.
I don't walk there but I agree.
But on the plus side, i drive past there all the time and it sure looks a lot nicer.
I haven't seen the finished pavement because i've moved away from sheffield, but I guess the idea is to allow more pedestrian 'permeability' into the area around the Republic etc., in an effort to attract more investment into the CIQ part of the town (and all that goes with it). If you think about it its an area ripe for investment, close to/in the City Centre, near railway station, on one of the major bus routes into the city centre. There are also plenty of buildings between Eyre Street and Shoreham Street that are suitable for residential conversion, so increased permeability would lead to an increase in the feeling of safety within the area (whether actual or otherwise).
Just my thoughts, but i do wish people would stop being so cynical about the Councils efforts to redesign sheffield City Centre. Stand back from the immediate issue and look at the wider reasons behind this so called 'money wasting'.
The fact is that Sheffield has only just started to move away from the days when we were forced to put up with the awful pedestrian underpasses that criss-crossed the city centre.
Nostalgia for the iconic Hole-in-the-Road aside, these were filthy, delapadated and dangerous places to be on one's own at any time of the day or night. Each one that has been filled in has elicited a fond reaction in my heart.
The changes being made in the location mentioned above are making the area in question more friendly to pedestrians and if they are anywhere near as good as those made on the other side of the Moor near Atkinson's, then they can only be for the best.
I am usually one to jump on the 'slag of the council' bandwagon when it rolls in but on this occasion they seem to be making a good job. Wide pavements with good visibility and good quality paving can only be good for everyone in the long run. These things are bound to take time as they are having to lay individual block paviors which are only approx 100mm square..thats a lot of work to do..and they look smart as well. It also seems to be expanding the area we would class as city centre thus making more areas accessible to everyone...good job!!!
ToryCynic 12-07-2004, 14:04 Is this the sport shop "Decathlon"? I know somebody that works there.

Im not saying that it is a bad thing to redevelop an area, I am definately for it, but my point is the actual paving, when everytime I go past I never see anyone walking round there.......but yet they lay rubbish tarmac in heavily populated areas, which ultimately breaks up, someone trips over and sues the council!!
Maybe they do that sometimes because if the area is used by thousands of people a day, tarmac is easier and cheaper to replace when it is worn down... or maybe they don't think that logically...
I think it looks great. I used to walk by there virtually every day when I was in Sheffield.
Further evidence that Sheffield council wants to be known as the most congested city outside of London, and they're doing all they can to achieve this status.
What's that got to do with the road IMPROVEMENTS on Eyre St?
Because the road "improvements" on Eyre Street mean losing lanes of road in exchange for unnecessarily wide pavements, hence strangling traffic flow and increasing congestion.
A.B.Yaffle 13-07-2004, 18:17 I think its beginning to look nicer than it has looked around there for years. It's part of the plans to make the area more pedestrian friendly. Congratulations to the council for the improvements! :D
Here here T020, another good point!
Sheffield council are intent on making the whole of Sheffield a pedestrian area - with the odd one way system - to send you a mile out of your way to where you want to go!
I am going to make another topic on the really intelligent planning on making Shoreham Street a one way towards the train station......If anyone doesnt realise this, there is NO WHERE to turn back until you get to Sheaf Square Roundabout! That could be a nightmare in rush hour. Why dont they make the train station roundabout a "roundabout" instead of a one - way roundabout.....?
It seems to me that no common sense prevails anywhere.

Personally i'm all for pedestrianisation of city centres, providing that there are enough parking spaces and associated facilities for those that choose to make their journeys by car, and there is an improvement in public transport and bicycle facilities. Not too fussed about making people drive out of their way to get there, perhaps it'll make them consider using public transport (when its appropriate)

Your losing one lane from Office World to St mary's Gate, not much really as during the work most people have found a way round this anyway.
This section of the road is less used then into town, which was always a bus lane and one lane for other traffic
The traffic light outside berlins are great becuase when it is busy it was nightmare trying to pull onto eyre street from blonk street.(?) (The road from the moor)
