Been thinking recently how I actually really like Rhianna's 'Unfiathful', EXCEPT for her whiny, nasal voice. If someone did a cover version of it, I would actually be pleased...

Anyone else have any songs that they love, but find the singer/band ruins them?

Most of David Grey's stuff. I really like the song 'This year's love' but I don't like his voice.

Weird I was also having this discussion about Keane and Coldplay - that I'm not keen on their voices either. Gabrielle is another one - that Out of reach i heard sang on a karaoke the other night and the girl sang it lovely.

Tom Waits' 'Downtown Train' - for some reason, and with a sense of great embarassment, I prefer the Rod Stewart version. :)

I can remember a tribute night on TV a few years ago for Bob Dylans 50th birthday. Loads of quality guests like George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Norman Petty etc all went on and did a Dylan number and were great. At the end, they wheeled on Bob Dylan himself to join the others and he completely ruined the whole thing with his nasally whiney voice.

two things about mariah carey (dont make up your own jokes)

1. she sings notes so high only dogs can hear her (probably for the rest of her family)

2. she NEVER sings one note when she can get by with 1047

she has got a couple of good points though (own jokes here)

Leonard Cohen can be a great songwriter, but most of his own versions of his songs leave me cold - all those cheesy synthesizers and Pop Idol-style backing singers. Cover versions like Tower of Song by the Jesus & Mary Chain, or Avalanche by Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds, show how good the songs themselves are.

I cant think of one at the moment, but I can tell you that 'Unfaithful' was written by Ne-Yo - who writes a lot of good songs for other artists. He prob would have done a better job singing it too.

I also have to confess, I often prefer Beatles songs when the Beatles aren't singing them...

'Jealous Guy' by John Lennon. I prefer the Bryan Ferry version. Sorry.

:o staggers backwards! Your Tom Waits appreciation licence is hereby revoked!

Although to be fair I can't stand Bob Dylan's voice (or his terrible harmonica playing), but I usually love covers of his songs.
