ive had a few problems with my pc, at the moment when i turn it on i get a blue screen with some eror stuff on it.
if i reboot it i cn not getin to the set up or anyother part of the workings.
is it totally goosed or can anyone offer any advise
Sounds like it's given up teh ghost Jane.. Have you had a particularly nasty virus go through your PC lately or anything? Could be that wot's buggered everything up.
Spiritfly 27-08-2006, 16:35 Your info on the hard drive could probably be saved if you connect it to another PC
melthebell 27-08-2006, 17:05 we cant tell you anything unless we know what error it is
it could be a hard drive error (possibly not fixable)
it might just be a missing dll file stopping windows from booting up (fixable)
aswell as a million and one things
the blue screen says
a problem has beem detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer
if this is the first tine youve seen this suop error screen restart your computer. if this screen appears again follow these steps: -
run a system diagnostic utility supplied by your hardware manufacturer
in particular run a memory check and check for faulty or mismtched memory
try changing video adaptors
disable or remove any newly installed hardware and drivers. disable or remove any newly installed software, if you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components restart your computer, press f8 to select advamced startup options and then select safe mode.
ive tried this but i still can not gain access to the computer
Phanerothyme 28-08-2006, 12:15 Depending on what operating system you are using (Windows Xp, windows 2000, windows 98 etc) you will probably need the original CD with the operating system on it.
But the first thing to try is to get windows starting up in "Safe Mode". To do this, just keep tapping the f8 key as the computer starts up from cold.
If that works, then your system is probably rescueable.
If that doesn't work, get your original Windows CD out.
Put the disc in the computer and hit the reset button. The Computer should now start up from the CD drive, and offer you some sort of "Repair" option. Check the internet for more information on your particular flavour of Windows
If you still get a blue screen, you will probably need to go into the BIOS and make sure the computer tries to start up from the CD first.
Getting into the BIOS is easy if you know which key to press. Sometimes, when your computer starts up you'll see a message in white text on a black screen.
"Press <Key> to Enter Setup."
At which point you should press the key indicated to get into the Basic Computer Setup Screen. The key might be Delete or Backspace, or F2 or F4, it all depends on your computer.
Then you'll get a frightening looking menu. You are looking for something like "Basic Settings - > Boot Order". Somewhere in there you will be able to set the computer to try various drives in order when starting up. Often the floppy drive (FDD) is first. Try moving IDE CD-ROM to the top of the list and starting the computer up again.
Let us know how you get on.
I have had exactly the same problems - turned out to be memory chip had come loose!!!!!!!
Thought I was goin to have to buy a new pc!!! Lots of on/off problems for a couple of weeks then ...........

Memory and PSU are two of the biggest headaches, certainly in this case the memory should be high on the checklist.
HI everyone,
Ive got back in to my pc but its still very unstable. The writing on the sites is very big. pop ups galore, trying to get anti virus but trouble downloading it.
anyone any advise
Savannah2 03-09-2006, 08:52 Sounds like your PC is infested with spy/malware.
You need to scan your computer for spyware, if you do not have any programs installed, I have posted direct links to the download sites.
Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)
Adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/)
CWShreader (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php)
CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) Cleans out temp, cache plus lots of other junk file that are no longer required.
SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) This will update your host files and will prevent lots of dodgy site installing.
PCHell (http://www.pchell.com/) lots of useful information here.

What Sav says.....
Also, which antivirus are you trying to download.....please please please don't say Norton?
If it was Norton, forget it, and try downloading one of the freebies listed here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/faq.php?faq=vb_faq#faq_sf_computer_help) (I think Sav compiled some of this list).
When you've done all that, it's probably a good idea to install a decent firewall, which you will find in the list at the link above.
As for your screen being big, it may be that you might have to set your screen resolution to how you like it. Also, there may be a graphics card problem. I have a Windows 98SE machine, that I must really try to fix, which seems to have similar problems, but that does seem to be memory and/or graphic card problems.
fnkysknky 03-09-2006, 09:08 The actual error message from the blue screen would have been helpful - there will have been a STOP message or similar. If the blue screen still comes up when booting to normal mode then write it down and post it on here.

fnkysknky 03-09-2006, 11:07 Yep and there's normally an error message after the first line - which happens to be the important bit :) The rest doesn't tell us anything useful.
Ok, Next part, im trying to download an anti virus, AVG.
My pc wont let me it just closes the window before i can download.
advise please
RiffRaff 03-09-2006, 18:42 Er....if you're having trouble with your PC, how are you getting posts up to the Forum??
As previous posters have said, F8 it on boot-up, choose "Safe Mode" and see what happens from there....
RiffRaff, that's really unhelpful.
I may be wrong jane91, but you may have to do a full system recovery (which wipes all your stored data, so you will have to backup on to a separate disk). Someone else may know better though.

Sorry lass, but how is that unhelpful exactly?
If she's got another unit that can connect to the Internet, she can maybe download the anti virus/spyware jobs to that machine, and then copy/run them on her poorly one......
Just a thought....
Ive managed to get avg Yah, ive got a toolbar called mirar
it wont remove, any ideas
Thanks to everyone who has helped over the last few days
Savannah2 04-09-2006, 20:29 Download the trial version of Ewido (http://www.ewido.net/en/) or you can remove manually if you confident with editing the registry.
Do not use this method if you are not confident editing the registry
Click Start > Run.
Type regedit
Then click OK.
Navigate to the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
In the right pane, delete the value:
"ToolbarInstall" = "MirarSetup.exe"
Navigate to the keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser

Navigate to the key:

Savannah2 06-09-2006, 17:57 HI, Im back again, Ive now got problems with virus on System 32.

System32 is located in the C: drive under C:\Windows\System32 or C:\Winnt\system32. Several of the Windows system files that you use to run your computer are stored in the System32 directory, making it a very attractive place for viruses.
I presume you have used AVG to virus scan and detect this virus, has it not put this into quarantine?
You could, if possible, do an on line virus scan with Trend Micro (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/) this will ask you to download an activex to your hard drive, this will be OK.
Then scan your hard drive and see if this will remove the virus.
Also you could use the free 30day trial of NOD32 (http://www.eset.com/download/index.php)
Johnybee_uk 08-09-2006, 00:25 Unless you got something very very important in your harddisk that you cannot affod to lose. otherwise, just bite the bullet and reformat the hard disk and re-install the operating system it farmorequikerand less hassle. tidy's up your computer too.
