I can confirm that Ace Recruitment really do work very hard to make sure that drivers working through them are as busy as they wish to be (within driver's hours laws of course). My ex-hubby worked through Ace for quite a long time, and they found enough work to keep the wolves from the door when permanent full time work was nowhere to be seen.

Hope you don't mind me invading your thread with a little personal testimonial Unregistered.

Unregistered, may I ask what your connection is with ACE ? What are the advantages/disadvantages or benefits of working for an agency as opposed to a permanent job with a company ?

The reason I ask is, I passed my LGV Class 1 in Nov 04. I was concerned about turning up for different jobs not knowing what I would be doing from one day to the next if I went with an agency. I preferred to know what I would be turning up to do and be familiar with the vehicle I would be driving. This was mainly because of my inexperience and possibly the risk of something serious happening. I did get a couple of permanent jobs and worked several months for a couple of companies in 2005.

However, I really did not appreciate the working hours involved. I obviously did realise it was not 9 to 5 and I was prepared to be as flexible as possible. I left an office job to do the driving, so it was something I wanted to do but I was working between 50 and 60 hours a week. The jobs themselves were okay and I enjoyed the freedom, but I was constantly knackered.

Now, I admit I am no spring chicken and maybe if I was 20 years younger it would be a different story. I am now back in an office job, but I do miss the freedom and responsibility of driving.

I do not want to make the same mistake twice and ultimately, driving may not be for me, but any thoughts or advice you might have would be appreciated.

OK - Category B is an ordinary car licence that allows the holder to drive up to 3.5 Tonnes.

Previously (I think before 1997) the car licence holder could drive up to 7.5 Tonnes.

New drivers now need a Category C1 licence to drive up to 7.5 Tonnes.

PS... None of the nine were ACE Drivers.

oh i see... so you give ACE drivers advanced training to cope with high winds do you? - and what are you on about supermarkets for? the drivers went over because they IGNORED the hundreds of flashing signs saying NOT to go over the places they did... that's human judgement.

One of the lorries was a Malcolm Group wagon and they do nothing but SY to scotland - so these drivers have years of experience on the same route - just goes to show you can never tell..

Hi, I trained for my class 2 (C) and class 1(C+E) with Radleys, based at Hellaby (01302 539851). Barry and Geoff are absolute stars. Make it quick though 'cos all the rules for testing and training change in the summer. It cost me around £1700 in total and I think you can apply for a career development loan to pay for it. He drives class 1 and holds a digi tacho. Had years of continental work travelling through France, Spain and North Africa.
