Tracie 26-08-2006, 03:15 PM This thread is for forummers to recommend their favourite local garden centre or nursery.
I don't drive, so it's rare that I get to take a trip out to a garden centre (other than B&Q!) but when I do, I like Markham Grange in Brodsworth, Doncaster. It's a bit of a drive from Sheffield but well worth it - as well as the main nursery, there's a large pet shop and a branch of Viscum Water Gardens (pond supplies stockist) on site.
I'm familar with Markham Grange because I lived in Doncaster for three years, and I don't really know which are the best garden centres in Sheffield yet, so I'm looking forward to hearing your top tip! :D
craigmason 26-08-2006, 03:36 PM i can recommend wards
http://www.wardsgardencentre.co.uk/
or the high peak garden centre
stackmonkey 30-08-2006, 03:29 PM The Herb Garden, near Pilsley, Chesterfield.
Handley Nurseries, nr Eckington.
torin8 07-09-2006, 11:27 AM I would have to recommend the Nursery in Old Brampton (Chesterfield) - the are only small but have a great range of plants and they are cheap as chips :)
irenewilde 22-09-2006, 06:32 PM I like Rhinegold out past Wisewood Cemetery. It's a huge place, selling gifts as well as plants and garden sundries. Loxley Nurseries, nearby, always seemed to be in a state of chaos and I could never find anything I wanted there but I called in a few weeks ago and it's transformed! I found plants there that Rhinegold didn't have and they seem to concentrate more on the garden-based stuff, rather than scented candles! So between them I reckon you could get everything you wanted!
viking 23-09-2006, 08:59 AM DUKERIES, (http://www.dukeries.co.uk/)near worksop. This is a very good and large garden centre.
WENTWORTH, (http://www.airey1000.freeserve.co.uk/) garden centre. Who also have a craft fayre every month.
bogweed 29-09-2006, 08:15 PM I can reccommend New Leaf garden centre on dyche Lane Sheffield S8 on the road to Coal Aston
Chumley 29-09-2006, 08:53 PM The guy who sits in the hut at High Peak Garden Centre is extremely helpful and knowledgeable, not to mention very enthusiastic.
They have a good selection as well, although I don't claim to be an expert.
If you're not buying anything too heavy, you could always get the train to Bamford.
stackmonkey 19-10-2006, 11:22 PM I can reccommend New Leaf garden centre on dyche Lane Sheffield S8 on the road to Coal Aston
I bought some good plants from there last week end - apparently owned by the same people as Dunston garden centre a few miles closer to chesterfield - also worthy of recommendation.

little-face 30-10-2006, 03:46 PM Id like to reccomened my dads friends place which is an Alpine centre at Calver! Its a great centre which stocks lots of home grown alpine plants that are great for rockeries!
It is on Froggatt road, derbyshire and is open fri, sat and mon 10am-5pm and sunday from 1pm - 5pm. Though closed january and February
Iv found a like to it though so here you are http://www.peakdistrictonline.co.uk/products.php?productId=127&categoryId=2327&page=1
sTaGeWaLkEr 30-10-2006, 04:03 PM Lee dragged me along to the 'Dukeries' near Worksop the other day to check out the competition. I have to say their Christmas stock is excellent.
Wentworth garden centre is pretty good albeit a tad pricey.
My sister keeps raving on about Tong garden centre - although I have no idea where it is!?!
I went to one a few months ago in Leicester - I can't remember the name, (will find out) It really was fantastic, probably the best I've ever been to.
EDIT: Apparently, it was called 'Woodlands'
stackmonkey 07-11-2006, 04:05 PM There's a Tong garden centre on the southern outskirts of Leeds. it is good, but I doubt it has anything sufficient extra over the more local places to justify a special trip.
Yellowrose 07-11-2006, 11:01 PM I have ordered something from gardening express and its taking ages. Its an online garden centre, so I wouldnt recommend it. Its also hard to chase them up.

Supposed to be the UK's leading expert on Alpines -so is definately the place to go :)
tanya175 28-11-2006, 10:34 AM loxley garden centre going out to bradfield has an excellent choice of exotic plants.bamboo, palms, tree ferns, and most other types of exotics. the prices are very low compared to other centres and b&q. they also can help with planting advice, winter care. excellent place.
shellym 16-01-2007, 09:28 PM I know it has been mentioned already but I like wentworth garden centre. It has a good selction of seeds, thomson and morgan, suttons along with others plus the same cheep potato seeds that wilcos stock. It has a beautiful garden for walking around and every second sunday there is a farmers market there selling organic veg, baked goods, fish, meat, pickles and cheese to name a few.
I don't think it is the cheepest for plants and not sure if they propegate/ grow their own plants but it is a great afternoon out, lovely cafe with home baked goods and pet shop. There is even a little farm for the kids and a nice play area.

If this is the one further down the road that the Admiral Rodney is on, I went here last week.
I agree the prices are competitive, but they had hardly anything in.
Strawberries - no not until Spring. Seed potatoes, next month they said. I got my terracotta strawberry planter from there though, and also bought a bird bath which was very reasonable. I walked round the perennials but there wasnt anything to excite me. It was almost as if they were still shut for Christmas.
torin8 28-01-2007, 11:36 PM Ok - it's a bit far from Sheffield - but the one at Tansley / Tibshelf (Near Matlock) called Scotland's Nursery's is a great one. Was just looking around and it's so nice to be approached by a knowledgeable nurseryman who actually gives a damn about what you are buying!
nads9 09-02-2007, 01:51 PM My favourite garden centres are:
The Dukeries near Worksop: Quite big with good choice of plants and now even an aquatic centre where you can buy pond fish. Makes a good day out since there is also a small musem, farm shop and small restaurant next to it.
PSI- Plants of Special Interest in Braithwell, Rotherham. A bit of a trip from Sheffield but well worth it. As the name says they don't have the normal plants which makes a change. They've got loads of different trees too.
The restaurant/cafe attached to it had really good food that's why it is always busy.
Tickhill Garden Centre in Doncaster, Tickhill: Also fairly big with loads of different plants too chose from.

Matlock garden centre round the corner is good too.

this is the best watergarden place in our area
holidayhutch 09-04-2007, 03:40 AM As others have already suggest I like Wentworth Garden Centre too, but it is a tad expensive.
My other favourites are Cannon Hall Garden Centre in Barnsley, great garden centre, cafe, country park, large house and kids farm to look round too.
Not far from there is also Tom Horsfields, he is an International Rose Grower and the setting is beautiful it is in, his daughter runs the Potting Shed restaurant also on site which has fantastic food.
If you want some great clay pots just past Cannon Hall is Naylors who make clay pipes, but they make fantastic pots too at a fraction of the costs elsewhere charges.
Not sure what it is called but passed one on I think it's Manchester Road towards Broomhill, yesterday, not far from Weston Park Hospital (Wyvern or something like that) fantastic plants at reasonable prices too.
kate55 11-04-2007, 12:15 PM There is one in Chapeltown - forget the name but its sort of behind the jet station. There is also a fruit & veg shop next to it. Will probably be going soon so will post the name and name of the road.

As an update, I got some great aquatics two weeks ago from a greta garden centre, very reasonbale prices, very extensive stock, just off a littlwe roundabout on the way to batemoor/ jordanthorpe/ lowedges estates on the southern perimter of sheffield.
kim69 15-04-2007, 09:29 PM Today we have been to Dore Moore Nurseries and they had got some lovely veg plants ready for planting, really nice quality.

do you mean newleaf gardencentre
http://www.newleafplantcentre.co.uk/
Alastair 18-04-2007, 05:01 PM I'd like to recommend the garden centre at Worthwhile Occupational & Recreational Krafts on Ringinglow Road. It's a bit of a hidden gem with only one small sign to show where it is (opposite the old fire station), but it beats any mainstream commercial garden centre hands down on plant prices. Not only do you get cheap plants, but you're contributing to a good cause as well.
Never been in before till yesterday, but I'll certainly be using it again.
I couldn't find out much online about it, just this from the council website -
[I]WORK (Worthwhile Occupational & Recreational Krafts) was founded in 1995. Based just off Ringinglow Road at Bents Green, WORK is an independent charity providing meaningful training and education in vocational and life skills for adults with learning disabilities.
The workforce learns skills in concreting, painting, horticulture, sewing, catering, woodwork, customer service and various types of craftwork. Currently around 40 adults with learning disabilities are benefiting from the charity.
The project comprises a workshop, industrial sized greenhouse, craft workshop, concrete casting room, display area and a café and sales shop. They offer a wide range of bedding plants, garden ornaments, hanging baskets and craft goods for sale in the café.
craigpugh 18-04-2007, 11:40 PM alistair- have you got a postcode for WORK?
Alastair 18-04-2007, 11:56 PM alistair- have you got a postcode for WORK?
It's behind Bents Green School, postcode S11 7TB
Tricky 19-04-2007, 10:29 AM Another recommendation for Rhinegold on the way to Bradfield...a huge range of plants and gardening products, helpful staff, and really well laid out with lots of mature specimens to help you see what the young plants will grow into.
Wonder Boy 29-04-2007, 09:52 AM Valleyside garden centre on manchester road is excellent. It is crammed with quality gear, the plant displays as you walk in are the gardeners sweet shop, truly excellent. A proper garden centre with no cafe, pot pourri or other tripe.
craigmason 29-04-2007, 10:07 AM went to one yesterday mill garden centre chesterfield not a bad little place not much plant stock on sale but they have a large reptile section also a large aquatic section with some indoor koi pools full of expensive koi

riverside gardencentre

unstone plant centre
has any body been to either of these two ?
Can anyone give me some advice on pond plants? We've recently moved and inherited a sizeable pond which has loads of goldfish. It's a man-made thing with a liner that starts from a shallow 'beach' and gadually gets to a depth of about 5ft. We've had a filter and pump installed as it was very murky, but I gather that if you put enough of the right sort of plants in you shouldn't need the filter - is this true? In anycase we'd like some plants to make it more interesting. I did buy a couple but find it quite hard to stabilize the containers - they keep keeling over. which are the easiest. most reliable plants that won't take over the entire pond? We're kind of 'stick it in and forget it' sort of gardeners (at least I'm honest!).
craigmason 12-05-2007, 08:43 AM get some lillies but do not get the white alba one as it will take over your pond here are some websites you may find useful

Henrietta 06-06-2007, 12:28 PM Not sure what its name is, but there is a great little nursery opposite the turn off for More Hall Reservoir/Bolsterstone, just after Wharncliffe Side. Its on the left as you head towards Deepcar. They have quite a few pond plants too. Some lovely varieties in the greenhouse and plenty of other plants outside - and all at a fraction of B&Q prices! :)

paulo232323 13-08-2007, 11:23 AM If you want to shop online, I suggest PVGC2. I know that online ordering can be a bit hit and miss with gardens and allotments, but I found them knowledgeable and helpful when I emailed, and they did my garden lime at a special price cos it was for the 'lot. Was very impressed
MaureenHB 17-08-2007, 10:42 AM Glapwell nurseries, Bolsover road, Chesterfield.. really good prices, especially for seasonal bedding. Well worth a trip out.
magsie 20-08-2007, 08:30 PM Dore Garden Centre opposite Door Moor Inn is the one for me. Enthusiastic and under new management. Very friendly which means a lot. Found log border rolls last week after visiting B&Q, and lots of other garden centres and cos I asked for 5 he gave me a discount! Lovely people. Great plants.
craigmason 21-08-2007, 09:16 AM for me a good gardencentre has to sell a wide choice of hardy tropical plants i do wish this place was in sheffield

Burncross Nursery and garden centre, on Burncross Road.
Gets my vote as well. Very knowledgeable, helpful and the place is cheap as chips.

They even sell the fabled Lion Pooh! (http://www.dobbies.co.uk/acatalog/Cat-Deterrents.html) :wow:
karenat35 26-11-2007, 09:54 AM The best plants I have ever bought have been from Wortly Hall plant sales, the last one was in August and the dates for next year will be on their website. There are a number of stalls from small nurseries and each stallholder knows their stuff and are happy to give advice. The prices are fantastic, but get there early else you will miss all the really good buys. I must be mad letting on about this one!!!

Valleyside Garden Centre is on the outskirts of the city along Manchester Road. There is some sort of bus service out there, but not that frequent at a guess.

helenasq 25-03-2008, 11:24 PM mill garden center near chesterfield, mostly pets (furry, reptiles, tropical fish.koi etc) but also has a gardening section. Well worth a visit, also has a cafe with homemade things!

Hi all
Wanted to recommend one of my favourite garden centres its called Millthorpe Nursery- see address below. They are really friendly and helpful and even came out to my home so see my garden to give me more advice on what plants would work etc. It is only a small nursery but really good value and if you want anything they havent got they can usually get it in for you.
Millthorpe Lane, Holmesfield
Dronfield S18 7SA
Tel. 07876 700071

They also bring a stall to Sheffield Farmer's Market (Last Sunday of the month outside Coles (Sorry, John Lewis) )
Definitely worth a look, as they have a slightly different range to the mainstream, and are very friendly
Orian11 22-04-2008, 12:37 PM Hi there,
I too have a garden nursery this is in London. May be you could drop by there sometime
blazekitty 07-05-2008, 06:16 PM What times is Valleyside Garden Centre open? I'm also in S10 and don't have a car but want to start a little fruit and veg area in my garden.
Hi
Would like to recommend the nursey at Barlborough - don't know what it is called but has good plants at really good prices
Rebina 07-06-2008, 12:25 AM I recommend Braithwell Nurseries. Its just past Maltby on the way to Braithwell but before you get to the larger Plants of Special Interest. Visiting both would be an excellent day out.
The man at Braithwell nurseries is very good and knowledgeable. He sells a lot of unusual plants, semi hardy exotics, tree ferns, cacti, perrenials as well as the more common bedding stuff and its very reasonably priced.
Yog Sothoth 09-06-2008, 11:28 AM Valleyside Nurseries on the A57 out towards Rivelin is very good, not cheap, but excellent quality plants, friendly and knowledgeable staff, a brilliant selection, including lots of unusual stuff, and the place itself is actually quite beautiful.
One of my other favourites is High Riggs Nursery, up on a high ridge above Stannington. An old-fashioned farm nursery, selling plants at very good prices, and I doubt you'll find cheaper.
lectrolove 28-06-2008, 06:49 PM We've just got back from Great Longstone where they're holding an open gardens weekend, and there's a great little nursery there specialising in hardy perennials. We had no idea it existed until today. We came home laden with plants and all at very reasonable prices.

sahill 17-08-2008, 03:49 PM i think horsfields nursery, at silkstone is the best in the area, it is family run and been going for years, they have a large selection of everything and it's very reasonably prices as they grow lots of their own stuff. Cannon hall is not far from here too if you want an afternoon out, it's quite expensive and rather little, but nice walk in the grounds.
I agree with MaureenHB about Glapwell nurseries, Bolsover road, Chesterfield..
Went last week got loads of plants all decent prices. Got a Fuschia for £1.95 and Laverteria (is that how you spell it?) for £3.50.

I'll third that.
It took me a while to find out about Glapwell nurseries (no website i'm afraid) but now that I have, I wont go anywhere else.
It's one of those great, but rare, cheap and cheerful nurseries that only sells plants, landscaping materials and a few pots. They have a great range and are much cheaper than the other garden centres around here, at least the half price.
bobbuilder 18-10-2008, 07:37 AM Can anyone recommend a good nursery where we can buy raspberry cane plants? We want to get some planted before the end of the month.
sahill 19-10-2008, 03:06 PM one of my gardening friends got some from horsfields nursery, in silkstone the other day, yellow, red, autumn and summer she said they had quite a few different varieites. their website is www.pothousehamlet.co.uk
bobbuilder 20-10-2008, 08:32 AM Thanks - that sounds very promising. Several nurseries that I phoned over the weekend said their raspberry canes were being delivered at the end of October, which was rather late for what we wanted.
Hello
Can anyone recommend a nursery for fruit trees - my mum and dad have asked for apple/pear/blackberry for christmas! I have seen some to order over the internet, but i would rather see them "in the flesh" before I buy them. Anywhere in the Sheffield/Doncaster area would be fine.
Thanks
Anita
lilqueenie 08-11-2008, 09:59 PM Hello
Can anyone recommend a nursery for fruit trees -
AAAA - I think I heard about this lot from Pickering on the radio or Gardener's World - I've bookmarked their website for when I have room for an orchard ( I have a dream...!). They seem to have an apple for every possible occasion. It would be really cool to get them a heritage variety
http://www.rvroger.co.uk/
A bit more locally - Burncross Nursuries near Chapeltown have fruit trees. One had an apple on it that I wanted to pick when I was there last time! And Loxley Nursuries have fruit trees too.
What a lovely Christmas present!
sahill 22-11-2008, 03:12 PM Hi AAAA.
Horsfields nursery in silkstone have lots of fruit trees in pots, we got an apple the other week £19 which i thought was pretty good, they had about 30 or so varities, I saw some pears too but not sure what type.
From Sheffield it's exit 37 of the M1 so not too far away.
