Got a letter from British Gas today, saying that my electric bill is overdue, but its all on a pre-payment meter
Anyone else had anything like this? I havent rung them up yet, just wanting peoples views on it first. Is it me, or does it seem a bit silly that i owe money when i cant use any electric unless i to pay for it first :help:

Yes I have one here for £58.00.
It is a waste of time ringing them as all you get through to is ayoung Indian girl who cannot comprehend what you are talking about.
It is along the lines of:-
Your meter was set at a certain tarrif so you are paying for it at that tarrif.
Since it was set the tarrif has changed so any units you use, after the tarrif change was made are charged at the new tarrif.
The meter will have to be reset to the new tarrif, and to collect the OS underpayment.
As they say 'its a load of old b*****ks'
Why they cant orginise it like the gas people with the computerised 'quantum' meters I do not know.
Like everything else these days, its money, money.

its only for £13.53, so not like its lots of money, have sent them an email anyway and shall see what they say....
I've heard of one case dating back to 2000.

You should be thankful it wasn't my phonebill last year. My contract provider missed a decimal spot!

When u have moved into the preoperty u should have supplied meter reading to British gas and been supplied with a NEW prepayment card. If you have been using other person's card or your previous card you might sometimes pay someone else's debt.

Having worked for british gas ago a few years ago ,let me tell you where the problem would be.
1. incorrect opening meter reading when u moved in
2. incorrect estimated reading on your record at british gas as of now.
3. payments not going to your account when u make purchases through prepayment card
If u call british gas and tell about the situation and someone in edinburgh would be dealing with such payment queries and the amount would be written off possibly within 28 days otherwise u are in for a hassle.
switch to a credit meter now ,or have a meter reset and get a new prepayment card off them.
