View Full Version : Reality TV to Sink to Lower Depths t020 11-07-2004, 11:01 See link: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/07/11/nporn11.xml JoeP 11-07-2004, 11:08 Jeez..... The media world gets increasingly more decadent. If you want to see a breeding ground for a 'backlash' against liberalism then just keep watching the TV producers strive for more lowest common denominator viewing. It would be interesting to see how much the rise of Nazism was fuelled by the apparent decadence of the Weimar republic, and how the Nazis exploited it, as well as the economic conditions. At the risk of sounding like a judgemental old-fogey, this sort of thing just strips us all of dignity. We are definitely heading towards a 'bread and circuses' culture. As soon as you start removing taboos from the media, there is evidence to suggest that it's 'thin end of the wedge'. This year Bravo Channel, two years time Channel 4 or 5. There we go, rant done. Joe saxon51 11-07-2004, 15:21 What's it going to be called? "Screw the viewing public!"? Carmine 12-07-2004, 10:16 I hate this brand of tv and all it stands for, perfect example of keeping the masses fat, stupid and convinced that they have their finger on the pulse and understand the world outside of their own empty heads. PuressenceUK 12-07-2004, 10:55 Forget the ranting, how do you apply to get on it!!!! Carmine 12-07-2004, 10:57 I think you might have taken yourself out of the running by proving your ability to communicate via the written word! PuressenceUK 12-07-2004, 11:01 Can't apply anyway, her indoors would kill me. And yes I have corrected my typing error! I just think there are bigger things to worry about than reality tv and was merely trying to lighten the tone. Too much gloom and doom on this board. You took the words right outta my, errrr, keyboard, heh. Same problem, would love to apply but er indoors would not just murder me, that would be just the tip of the iceberg, lol. And yup, the people in the forum need to lighten up, this is 2004, not 1904, sheesh, so what, it's sex on TV, like people ain't been doing it for years, besides, if it is after the watershed, big deal, it's adult entertainment, nothing wrong with that, if you don't like it, go get a sign, go picket something and stop moaning. Lou 12-07-2004, 11:27 OK I admit I have been watching BB but this idea is taking things too far. It worries me that this sort of stuff is becoming deemed as OK to show in an uncensored fashion on TV. For those that want to watch porn there's plenty out there to get hold of, but putting a programme like this on mainstream TV pushes back the line of what's acceptable to show on TV and it concerns me where it's going to stop. At the risk of sounding like a prude, it sounds tacky, distasteful and an unnecessary programme to me. I'm fully aware of the fact that I don't have to watch this tripe, but that doesn't mean that I have to like it and applaud it! Just another monstrosity spewed up by tv's bottomless chum-bucket... JoeP 12-07-2004, 20:59 Originally posted by Kry10 And yup, the people in the forum need to lighten up, this is 2004, not 1904, sheesh, so what, it's sex on TV, like people ain't been doing it for years, besides, if it is after the watershed, big deal, it's adult entertainment, nothing wrong with that, if you don't like it, go get a sign, go picket something and stop moaning. We're not moaning, just expressing an opinion. A wider context is that whilst we are fed the myth of 'choice' in the media, we are actually getting large amounts of cheaply produced tat. It's not sex on TV I have an issue with - there are oodles of porn channels out there and I don't recollect ever complaining about them. What I have issues with is the presence of an explicit programme like this on a Channel that is NOT specialist porn. Bravo is 'laddish', but to some degree so is Channel 5 and to a lesser degree Channel 4. What concerns me is the fact that given a year or two and the 'baseline' of acceptability on more mainstream TV will change for the worse. TV production companies will attempt to push the boundaries in all sorts of ways, usually towards more lowest common denominator, cheap TV. If you want TV that is challenging and TRULY provocative, or that provides good drama and comedy, then this is NOT the way forward. Joe, the Victor Meldrew of Walkley! Carmine 13-07-2004, 10:26 Nothing quite as amusing as someone suggesting that people swapping opinions on a current issue that has important and far reaching implications for anyone who watches the tv or reads a newspaper need to "lighten up". Why not start another thread that encourages people who actually like the idea of soft-porn becoming an integral part of the mainstream media, then you don't have to worry about the debate rising to the lofty heights and you can keep the focus on the t&a? t020 13-07-2004, 22:45 It's not a case of "lightening up", it's a case of what personal standards and morals you have as an individual and if the media breach these then you have every right to complain, although it is unlikely to go anywhere. I've never watched a full episode of BB, and have only ever seen about 10 mins maximum over the last 4 years since it started. Since it is so hyped though, everyone talks about it, you walk in a shop and you see the tabloids and mags staring at you with BB headlines, and you just can't escape it. From what I've detected over the last 4 years though, Big Brother started out as a vaguely scientific social experiment and has descended into 24/7 softcore pornography. This latest programme is the next step and it's only a matter of time before Channel 4 or 5 snap it up. Cols 14-07-2004, 09:30 As John Lennon once sang... "Keep you doped with religion, sex & TV And you think you're so clever and classless and free But you're still ............" I think you know the rest :) Was he ahead of his time and referring to reality TV ? mojoworking 14-07-2004, 09:56 Frank Zappa took this typically cynical view of TV back in 1973. Now THIS is a man who was ahead of his time. Do you think perhaps he'd had a premonition of Big Brother? I am gross and perverted I'm obsessed 'n deranged I have existed for years But very little has changed I'm the tool of the Government And industry too For I am destined to rule And regulate you I may be vile and pernicious But you can't look away I make you think I'm delicious With the stuff that I say I'm the best you can get Have you guessed me yet? I'm the slime oozin' out From your TV set You will obey me while I lead you And eat the garbage that I feed you Until the day that we don't need you Don't go for help . . . no one will heed you Your mind is totally controlled It has been stuffed into my mould And you will do as you are told Until the rights to you are sold That's right, folks . . . Don't touch that dial Cols 14-07-2004, 10:23 Nice One  saxon51 14-07-2004, 20:48 .................BIG BROTHEL? |
