View Full Version : Fungi Foray - Saturday 14th October - Glen Howe

I've done a night school course and led a fungi foray when I worked as a Ranger so wondered who'd be up for one.

Location is Glen Howe Park, time 10am, date Saturday 14th October.

Sorry its a bit of an early time but that is the best time to see the mushrooms before the slugs get them.

We'll meet in the car park. The 57 and 58 buses stop at Wharncliffe Side and people need to get off just after the Wharncliffe Arms. If you reach the Blue Ball you've gone too far.

Feel free to post on the thread or PM me with any questions.

Location would be Glen Howe Park, time 10am, date TBC but on a Saturday

Sure, if I'm around I'd love to join in! Thanks, taxman, for bothering to organise another walk. :)

Could be interested depending on which Saturday. I've got a good walk that goes from Glen Howe Park if you're wanting to go a few miles (5-6 I think).

This sounds really interesting - I'll say yes tentatively. I'll just need to work out how to get there :)

Thanks Strix - that'd be v much appreciated (but not taken for granted - I can lurk en route with petrol money & doggy treats :) ) I'm appallingly bad at finding my way anywhere. Which come to think of it maybe why I like walking so much seeing as I do plenty of it when I get lost :|

Anyone know the bus number at all? I can't see it marked on the travel planner map thingy or even the A-Z.

It's at Wharncliffe Side. The 57 and 58 buses to Stocksbridge pass through.

Hiya
Its still in the planning stage, I am just gauging the level of interest before setting a date.

What I had in mind isn't a "walk" in the strict sense, just an amble around Glen Howe for a couple of hours exploring this hidden gem and spotting Mushrooms.

I'd be up for this, would it be child friendly?

I see no reason why anybody couldn't come along. When I did the walk as a Ranger there were plenty of children who enjoyed being let loose on a woodland floor full of mushrooms. It just depends on the crop, if there aren't any around it could be a bit dull for everyone

Don't worry although most fungi is edible it's edible in the same way that dust or cardboard is. There are about 5% mushrooms that make good eating, 90% that are naff and not worth bothering about and about another 5% "special ones" to slip into an unfaithful partners porridge! :hihi:

That would be useful especially as fungi can't be guaranteed. Its a nice spot to have a stroll ariund anyway and any information you have would be greatly appreciated

Sorry taxman, as I mentioned at the meet on Monday, I have to work alternate Saturdays, and I`m working that Saturday I`m afraid otherwise I would have come. Hope ye find some, but knowing you as a fun-guy, it shouldn`t be a problem!
Incidentally, am checking out an area close to me this weekend , around Wortley Park, with a view to suggesting a walk from High green, thro Westwood Country Park and on to Wortley Park at some point in the future. Do you think ppl might be interested in this?

Bump! I got bored so I thought I'd be an interfering busy body and foist the bus timetable on you all so there's no excuse not to go on this splendid excursion!

No idea where we're supposed to get off! :hihi:

Car drivers look away now! (http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/yorkhumber/southyorkshire/timetables/timetable.php?day=2&source_id=2&operator=South%20Yorkshire&op_id=26&area=&service=57/58/58A/758&routeid=786205)

Also of interest up that way is Avalon's group's website, (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=150479) though I don't know how near the line we'll be in Glen Howe Park. Runs off to look....

once you've passed through Oughtibridge there is about a mile before Wharncliffe side.

The first stop in Wharncliffe Side is outside the paper factory. The second is just after the Wharncliffe Arms pub and the third is outside the Blue Ball pub.

It is the second stop you need. Looking back you should then see a sign directing you to Glen Howe

What a shame - it is over the other side of Sheffield to me and by the time I got there with Mr Parcher, who is an avid mushroom forager, you would all be on your way back. (and I will be at an exhibition anyway!)

For some reason, this year, our favourite haunts round the Killamarsh area are devoid of mushrooms.

That's strange. I wonder why it's doing that.

Easy to remember though. The 57 and 58 alternate, every 15 minutes. They leave at 00, 15, 30 and 45 minutes past the hour from the interchange. The journey to Wharnecliffe Side takes half an hour, so 9.15 will get there at 9.45 (giving a bit of time to find the flippin' place.) :)

hello!

this sounds cool just a couple of questions:

- how long do you intend to be out for?
- can anyone post a link to a map or give a postcode/streetname that i can identify glen howe park by? im struggling trying to find it and im not that familiar with the wharncliffe/deepcar area!

beckelina

Try google maps using postcode S35 0DW. This should take you to Storth Lane in Wharncliffe Side - the car park is at the end of this.
You can walk there from the Blue Ball pub south along the main road, up School Lane, via the footpath over the brook into the Park, or the stop before that and straight up Green Lane. The 57 at 9:30 should get there just before 10!

The walk should last 2 hours, 2 and a half tops.

Not so many pictures today for obvious reasons. I wasn't trying very hard, to be honest. Too much faffing about required when the light's that bad. And lots were out of focus, so here's some that work OK. (http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l115/purdyamos/Glen%20Howe%20Park/?action=view&current=DSCN0493.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch1)

Sarah greyhound really enjoyed the opportunity to socialise - she likes 'sprogs'. Sol, the lurcher, had a lot of fun running about, but at 10 years old had over-reached himself and spent the afternoon asleep on a chair. He was a little stiff on his evening walk.

Liked the photos purdyA and it was good to meet you again and to make new acquaintances.

Right, what I found are large mushrooms, with a brown cap yellowish stem, and spongy yellow undercap. When sliced the flesh is white, apart from the spongy yeallow bit. Also the flesh does not oxidise and turn blue when exposed to air.
I am Italian and used to go in October to pick porcini (Boletus Edulis or Boletus Regius). The only differences between what I have seen and what I remember is the size of the stem and the smell wich is less intense. I am not sure these are Ceps, but i think they still belong to the Boletus family.
Do you think it's possible to have Ceps in Beighton?

Hi - just wanted to say a belated thanks to Taxman and I'm glad everyone enjoyed the walk!
I probably mentioned that I was trying to start up a Friends Group for Glen Howe Park - well, for anyone who is interested we have a public meeting where you can find out a bit more.
It is on Tuesday 7th November at 7pm in Wharncliffe Side Community Centre, Brightholmlee Lane (next to the school).
We will also be planning a volunteer work day for January so watch this space! (or probably the space in the Events threads...)
