View Full Version : Reliable vet in South Sheffield wanted
frenchfrie 25-08-2006, 18:54 Hi,
My dog is not well at all at present and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a vet in the South Sheffield area.
He is currently reciving treatment but I'm just not 100% happy that he's getting all the treatment and care that he should be and is appropriate. I don't think it is fair to name the vets I'm using presently as it is just my perception but when the first thing they asked is was he insured I kinda started to feel uneasy.
I fully realise that as with any business vets are in it to make money but I want primarily to know that my dogs wellbeing comes first.
Grateful for any suggestions as to where folks have used and feel comfortable with.
TIA
S8 Blade 25-08-2006, 19:04 I don't have pets personally, but my friends & family that live in this area have always used the vets on Abbey Lane.. not even sure on the name of it lol! Next to the Spar on the end of Abbey Lane near the Abbey Pub..
There's a new one opened on Abbeydale Road opposite the Millhouses pub too.. can't comment on that one but if it's new maybe worth giving it a try?
We use Peak Vets at Woodseats. They've been really good with our pets, can't recommend them enough. They have a website - I think it's WWW.Peakvets.co.uk.
We take our dog Max to this vets opposite the Abbey Pub in Woodseats
Abbeymoor Veterinary Centre

Never had any problems and have found their prices competitive and the staff very experienced.

That's Abbeymoor.....so that's two votes already !!
WallBuilder 25-08-2006, 19:31 I used to use the one down at Highfields and never had any problems but as it was a bit of a trek moved to the one on Abbey Lane. They however don't do emergency cover and so a few months ago had to get Max to Peak vets on Olivet road at Woodseats. They were great and couldn't do enough to put my mind at ease. Needless to say I'm now on their books or rather Max is and the follow up care is great and his boosters which he got last week were cheaper than my previous two vets.
I'd recommend them highly.
helenbean 25-08-2006, 19:33 We go to the Hallam vet in Crookes, we have had really good help regarding our kittens. Even when one of them was ill they were very helpful and understanding.
midgecat 25-08-2006, 19:45 we recently registered at Peak Vets at Woodseats and have found them very good. they have good car parking, excellent opening hours (late evenings and weekends) and are really kind. my cat had a tooth out the other week and i was anxious about it ...... the vet phoned me as soon as she woke from anaesthetic to say she OK and phoned yesterday to check how she doing. can't recommend them highly enough.
weenireeni 25-08-2006, 19:48 i use the vet at greengate lane in high green for our cats - highly recommend!
Go onto the Pets Group and ask, I'm sure someone will be able to help

unfortunately, that's North Sheffield, not South! :(
I use Highfield vets, on London road. they aren't too bad, but, as wallbuilder says, there's a worry over their not providing out-of-hours cover.

ooops, sorry i dont know the sheffield area very well!!!
Peak vets is excellant i have lods of small animals as well as dogs to care for.
They always listen and explain the condition , as a carer this week i have had to have a rabbits teeth looked at and at every step of the way the communication was fantastic with a good ending and a rabbit that won't be starving to death.
Also a dog was run over locally and they came straight out and did whatever was needed
Steve and Greg ar fantastic vets so this is my recommendation to anyone
MonkeyLover 25-08-2006, 20:54 Can't remember the name of our vets, but the fone number is 2485413 based at Hackenthorpe. They are really good - and don't charge the earth, They have another branch somewhere in Sheffield, but I can't remember whereabouts,
frenchfrie 25-08-2006, 20:57 Thanks all,
This has been really useful info. Sorry couldn't reply sooner - I've been trying to placate my pained pooch.

That would be A Crookes and partners and our dog is registered with them

Sorry to hear your dog is ill, and equally sorry that you should feel as you do about him/her asking whether your dog was insured. I think in this case you may have misunderstood his/her intentions. The vet would be thinking about your dog’s wellbeing — and yours. Yes, it boils down to money. I suspect that he/she asked this before diagnosing your dog’s illness. Treating any animal costs quite a bit of money nowadays, and I would prefer to think that he/she might have been hoping you were insured so that they could treat the dog without having to worry you about the final cost.
All the best for your dog, which I take to be “one of the family.”

I can't vouch for them personally but my mum takes her cat there and has had no problems.
I can recommend Vet 4 Pets on Abbeydale Road, they are fairly new, but we have taken our dog their a couple of times and they have always made a real fuss of him. It is a husband and wife that run the business and it's just up from the Tesco Garage. Plenty of Parking avaiable at the side of the run of shops.
...but when the first thing they asked is was he insured I kinda started to feel uneasy.
That will be the first question they ask if they can tell at a glance that he's going to need expensive treatment. If he is insured, it enables them to get on with whatever treatment they deem necessary, without phoning you every two minutes to check they can go ahead and spend your money ;)
You may, of course, be right. But only if there are other things raising doubts for you.

its crookes veterinary centre on main road at hackenthorpe they are perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !! excellent staff and vets and very competitive prices
I'm shocked at the variety in prices for vets. I've had to take my 2 guinea pigs in for Ivomectin injections for mites, and was charged £50 (!!!) for one appointment and they need a course of three!!. My friend was charged £10 for all three appointments and injections. Needless to say I'll be going to her vets for the rest of the course.
Are you sure that £50 didn't cover the whole course of treatment?

Absolutely certain. I'd already taken them to another vet for the first dose (I'd travelled to see my parents) and they were aware of this and had the records. That first dose had cost me £27 (again definitely only for one dose as I phoned to confirm what their next appointment would cost me), which was still over the odds but almost half the price. Whats annoying me now is that they've been being treated for three weeks and are showing no signs of improvement, one has open wounds.
That's shocking!!!
Isn't there some sort of regualtory body for vets?
I wonder how the insurance companies view this? :suspect:
