View Full Version : Windows Crashes, Running DDR 400 Ram
neutronium 25-08-2006, 17:29 I run a jetway motherboard, that is dual channel, and capable of using DDR 400 ram. I had been using DDR 333, in this configuration with no problems.
I have 3 dimm slots. 1 & 3 being the dual channel ones. My problem is. If i try to run DDR 400. I pass bios, start to load windows xp. Then the pc either reboots, or programms begin to crash as windows loads them. I have tried each of the new ram modules individually, in slot 1. With no problems at DDR 400. and with the modules in slots 1&2 with no problems. At DDR 400. They even work in dual channel mode at DDR 333, if I select the ram speed as that, in the bios.
So any ideas, why windows crashes, if I run them as dual channel at DDR 400? Well stumped to say the least
Couple of things to try with questions..
1. What is the FSB of your processor? If it's 166mhz (333) it'll not run if you manually set it to 200 to match your new memory. Adding to that, what processor is it?
2. Try altering the memory voltage. The new memory should have some info somewhere telling you what it should run at. My old mobo ran my memory fine as standard but on my new mobo I had to set it higher to stop windows blue screening.
3. Try a BIOS update......sometimes fixes odd things :)
neutronium 25-08-2006, 17:48 Bios all up to date, I have checked that.
FSB Is set at 166 mhz which is correct.
I have an AMD athlon 2500+ with barton core.
Although the memory package is PNY, the sticks are elixir. Says 2.6 volts. which also matches the bios setting.
Hmm, that's a little odd. One thought, maybe try doing the BIOS reset thingy, normally just a jumper on the mobo. You don't need the DDR400 for that processor though.
Also do they work together but in say slots 1&2 so it's not in dual-channel mode?
neutronium 25-08-2006, 17:52 yep work in slots 1 an 2 ok. thats not dual mode
work in slots 1 & 3 at ddr333, which is dual mode
What size is the memory? I'm kinda out of all ideas.... overclockers.co.uk have a good forum and some helpful people if you can't solve it here.
neutronium 26-08-2006, 13:40 memory is 512mb ddr400/ pc3200 x 2 sticks. working them fittted now, but not obviously as dual channel. Had a quick browse, at the overclockers web site, did not come across my problem, so would prob have to join. But thanx for the info.
Sounds to me like your timings are off, Whats cas Latency is the ram??
try setting the timings to 8-3-3-3 (If you dont know what i mean, let me know, i'll post more info)
I had a similar problem, But it was the ram that was faulty, I have seen this a few times, and it seems to be a common thing with either cheap(er) ram and/or cheap(er) motherboards (Jetway is a pretty cheap board if im being honest, I have never liked them)
neutronium 26-08-2006, 15:24 the setting in chipset menu are
t (ras)
t (rcd)
t (rp)
CAS latency
not sure whats whats.
I have tried various settings, the only one i am fairly sure of is the CAS, set at 3.
if these are out, why does the memory still work when not in dual mode? as i am using both sticks now, and no problems, other than not set up for dual mode. Thanks for knocking both my cheap motherboard & memory! LOL
:D :D
But he is right, I wouldn't recommend Jetway to anyone for a main machine.....budget makes like ASrock are much better :) Also what make of memory is it? Cheap no name or a decent regular make like Crucial?
I'd have a search for problems with your mobo on google.
Finally make sure you up your memory voltage a bit maybe .1 or .2V over standard.
Spiritfly 27-08-2006, 16:21 Try a bios update for your motherboard
neutronium 29-08-2006, 19:18 All drivers are up to date. Checked all that too. Today a friend tried it in his machine. He gets exactly the same symptoms. Its one weird problem. I just have a bad feeling, when i try to return them to PC World, explain whats happening, they will not stop laughing when i ask for a refund... By the way. my friends motherboard is not a cheap one, MSI ( so he tells me). and has said there are a lot cheaper memory sticks in the market than the PNY ones i am using.
Just out of interest are the memory module *exactly* the same? I.e. same size and same number of chips etc? if not they won't work in dual-channel mode. If you can't get them to work in another machine then they're buggered.
Suggestion from me is go to crucial.com/uk and get them from there. Never had a problem in 10 years of using them!
Spiritfly 30-08-2006, 08:14 Never buy anything from PC WORLD! they are simply crap.
Never buy anything from PC WORLD! they are simply crap.
They have some great offers on software at times tho!
But yeah for hardware don't touch em with a barge pole :)
neutronium 30-08-2006, 19:29 Yep both memory sticks are identical 512mb pc3200. still not sure why the packaging is for PNY dimm memory. When the chips are stamped ELIXIR, and it was the Elixir site i went too, to find the model number. As well as trying to find a solution. But hey ho. Its off for a refund i go. On Friday. So watch this space.
