hello everyone....seems my Gran was born in a place called wincobank sheffeild...i never knew such a place excisted but i am told its near meadowhall....
my gran....my dads mum...was SARAH ELLEN LOWE...born around 1888....she was born in wincobank....her family once a year would travel to watch football in Nottingham...i beleive thats how she met my grandad...he was either walter or Harold Smith....they went on to get married and have several children...my nan died in 1964...any help would be wonderful...many thanks.

As Angela said on the Indexers thread, you need to get a copy of your father's bith certificate if you don't have one already. This should give you your grandfather's name (and occupation). You can then work back in the marriage index, starting from the date of birth of the oldest child you know of, to find the marriage of this man and Sarah Ellen LOWE.

If you don't have that all important birth certificate, search for the reference at Ancestry (http://www.ancestry.co.uk/). You want the England & Wales, BMD Index under MORE COLLECTIONS.

When you have the reference (including year and quarter), you can go to the GRO site (http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/births/obtainingbirthcertificates/index.asp) and order the certificate online.

Sometimes there is no short cut, but there is a clear way forward nevertheless.

i know a Peter Lowe, a very hard working young man, well respected in his area, he lives in the southey green area which is not far from wincobank, about two miles, i ask him next time i see him
