At long last one of our little chickens has sprouted a tooth and I'm so pleased I thought I'd share it with you all! (Sad - maybe, pleased as punch - oh yes indeed!)
We've had whinging on and off at night for a couple of weeks and my lack of sleep has been torturous.
I was rather concerned as the girls are now 9.5 months old and no teeth, I had loads at their age, rather worryingly my partner had none until he was 15 months.
So, finally I noticed just the tiniest bit of tooth showing at the bottom and this is the twin who refuses to do anything. The other is Ms Development, crawling, trying to walk and talk etc but she fell behind in the tooth race. Rock on Twin No.1 for finally beating your sister in something!
Now, where did I put the rest of the teething gel.... oh and those wretched rings..... actually... where's the cats back leg gone?

Congratulations!!! My eldest was 13 months old when he got his first tooth. I was paranoid as all his little friends had a mouth full of choppers. He is 8 now and only lost 4 of these teeth, and again, all his pals have nearly all their 'big' teeth. I suppose when they come through, he will appreciate the need to care for them properly. My second son was much earlier getting his teeth and as a baby, seemed to suffer much more than the first so don't wish teeth on 'ms development' yet.

That's so exciting! Well done, Zebra... ( or rather, well done to Twinnie). Next thing, they'll be borrowing your makeup and you'll be complaining that their skirts are too short! :)

Hooray Zebra! My little one didn't get his first tooth till he was 9.5 months either. Now he's 12 months and only has 2 bottom ones and 2 further bottom ones coming through. I always thought they got 2 bottom ones then two top ones. Anyway, the later they come through, the better - the teeth will be much stronger etc. :P

Oooh, are you breastfeeding, though? Ouch! And this is my face when cosycub gets a good mouthful of any part of me and chomps down, lol >>>:gag:

Hehehehehe, sorry, must hurt like hell but the little emoticon face makes me chuckle.
Stopped breastfeeding some time ago so that's not an issue thankfully, she's always been cannibalistic and prefers a knuckle or fingertip instead. Still hurts but not as bad as a breast.

My little monster is pulling in his fangs, and his favourite trick when you're dressing him is to very sweetly nuzzle his face into your shoulder, then suddenly NIP REALLY HARD with his teeth and pull away...OUCH!!!!

I gave up putting anything bite-off-able like fingers anywhere near his mouth some time ago:P

Hi, my little boy has just started teething and the first two bottom teeth are on their way through. Most nights he's up 2 or 3 hours and Calpol doesn't seem to touch it, nor does Bonjela, those herbal powders you get from Boots or Anbesol. Any other suggestions to help the little lad (and his frazzled parents) get a good night's sleep? Is the whiskey on the gums such a bad thing (I haven't resorted to it yet!)?

Any comforting words on how long it'll last also gratefully received! :help:

Have you tried putting the bonjela on cotton wool and letting it soak in? also a teething ring that u put in the fridge works. I hope you find something as there is nothing worse than sleepless nights with an unsettle baby:thumbsup:

Heartshaped, you have my fullest sympathy. Don't worry, it won't last. How old is your little one? I moved on to Calprofen as soon as cosycub was old enough, for teething problems at night. It's a bit stronger, lasts longer, and reduces inflammation as well as pain and fever. We got far more sleep that way. But they do have to be a certain age...check on it, it's worth it.
I also used Teetha which seems to help, though I have no idea how as I never managed to do more than tip it down his throat. I had no luck with bonjela or calgel, as he just sucked it off my fingers and his gums and swallowed it, lol.
Best of luck and I hope you get a full night's sleep soon.

I used to use Nelsons teething granules, a homeopathic remedy which you can get from most chemists. It works very quickly and is really effective.

Thanks for the advice - he's nearly seven months and I hear that the first teeth are the worst (or that's the hope!). I have tried the Nelsons powders (Teetha) but they didn't seem to work and made him look like he has rabies! I might try the cotton wool and bonjela though, still haven't bought the whiskey! :)

i used to use a powder from the chemist, i cant remember the full name of it but if you ask the pharmasist for teething powder( i think its hendersons and parsons, or something like that) they will know what you mean. it worked wonders for my daughter, it was recommended by a friend and it is a powder that is sprinkled on the tongue! give it a try its great stuff!!

we bought some herbal powder - baby teething powder, looks a bit drug like!"?"?! but works a treat, you just have to keep them still, long enough to sprinkle it in
from most herbalists

There isnt any easy way, just hang on in there, it doesnt last forever. Freya keeps having sessions of fretfulness etc and we have Ashtons and Parsons, Nelsons Teetha, Calprofen and Calpol. Sometimes one works, sometimes none. She is 10 months now and still not one tooth!!! If its at night, I often give a cool drink to cool the gums too, some chilled fruit juice, which she seems to appreciate. Ive also experimented with a teaspoon of horlicks in her last bottle which sometimes helps her sleep better.

My heart goes out to you heartshaped- it's a tough stage for both little ones and parents.

I can tell you from personal experience (I had a large cyst on my hard palate that was incredibly painful) that Dentinox works better at killing the pain than Bonjela and every sort of generic teething gel that chemists could offer me.

Bear with it though- the stage doesn't last long.

The little nut/seed bar at Meadowhall sells dried apple rings. They are brilliant for teethers during the day. There's nothing added to them, just pure apple rings. Let the little ankle biter have a go on one of those.

(Can sympathise, we are going through this at the moment with junior surfin no.2)

Cheers

My 1 year old son's middle teeth are coming through, well 3 of them have come through, the other one on his bottom right is poking through the gum and he's in agony with it :( He's very ratty and irritable, I've given him some calpol and bonjela but are there any other methods I could use? He's really struggled with all of his teeth but bonjela usually does the trick but not this time :( Any advice appreciated, I hate seeing him like this, it breaks my heart to hear him screaming and pulling at his ears :help:

You poor thing, it's a horrible time, isn't it:(

Like you, I mostly relied on calpol and bonjela with my 3, but they also liked chewing on a teething ring. Sucking ice helped a bit too - you can freeze plain water on one of those d-i-y lolly sticks, or put a wet cloth in the freezer for 30 mins for him to chew on.

I'm sure you've thought of it already, but if he's pulling on his ear it's worth checking if he's got an ear infection.

Hope he's better soon :)

A carrot, which has been cooled down lots in the fridge helped my two. Gives them something cool to bite down on.

have you tried that herbal powder stuff from boots? white packet
looks a bit dodgy drug like (white powder in wrapped paper)when you take it out, but it works wonders

If it's really bad you could also try using both calpol and calprofen in rotation...calprofen, then calpol 3 hours later, then calprofen 3 hours after that. The caprofen (Ibuprofen) is better at dealing with swelling...together they work well.

The powders are called Teetha, and heaven knows why they work, but they do seem to.

Good luck!

PS it's me, cosy! Accidentally logged in as husband...

My little lad is 7 months old and getting his second tooth (bottom front), when the first tooth came through around 2 weeks ago he had a bad cold and now the second one is making an appearance he has a cold again. Just wondering if any parents believe there is a link between cold symptoms and teething?

He's had the cold twice before when he was much younger (and not teething) and it did seem different in that he was much more ill and miserable. The last two colds which have come at the same time as a tooth seem to give him a cough and runny nose but he seems less sickly....if that makes any sense?!!

cosywolf
13-10-2007, 09:53 PM
Teething can come with a number of symptoms, and the cold one is quite normal. They can also get tummyache and diarrhea (sp). Nothing odd about your child :)

Monsterbaby is always having a really snotty nose when he is teething, sometimes accompanied by a cough too. But he is not as grumpy as when he has a cold (differently moody though).

He is also (now that he is on solids) constipated when he is teething. Before he was on solids he just had green poo.

As cosywolf says loads of symptoms for teething babies and rarely two are the same.

Thanks that's a relief - was beginning to blame myself for taking him places where he was obviously picking up so many colds.

Had terrible night with him last night, hubby and I must have only got 3-4 hours kip because the little one wouldn't stop crying. Hubby took him for a drive at 8am this morning so I could have a break but what makes it all worse is that's it's the baby's christening today - gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

Going to try and get some calprofen (sp?) for him today, if he's old enough to take it. Hate seeing him this miserable.

Would not worry about taking him to places where he is picking up colds.
Sure, we do not like to see our babies suffer, but at the end of the day they have to build up their immune system so that is the perfect chance.

Isn't teething a nightmare!!!!!
Had my four month old son in the best routine you could ask for. In bed for 8 o clock and not up until 7 the next morning. I finally had my evenings back at 11 weeks old. But now he's teething and he's getting up nearly 3 times in the night. Anyone got any tips or suggestions to help stop him being in as much pain with it, I've tried anbesol and the teething rings.

I have heard the teething powders are good too, though not tried them yet. My dentist said not to use teething gels, bonjela etc unless its a one off if they cant feed or sleep, as it traps bacteria & can make the situation worse

My sister used these things called bicipegs (sp?) she got them from supermarket and they worked a treat during the day. they're like biscuits but so hard they don't break up. She gave my niece bicipegs in the day then calpol and gels at night. That way she wasn't constantly on medicenes.

Babycamrat is going through the same thing. Constantly drooling, chewing everything he can, and constantly rosey red cheeks. Found baby nurophen (sp?) works well when he is having a full on cry, but I've never heard of these powders. Where do you get them from?

HI, I've read through all these posts and have found some really useful advice but I thought I'd look for further reassurance that all this will end soon by posting a ....er..thingy...my little boy is 10 months and has slept like an angel for most of that time until suddelnly.. he is waking first just early (5ish) then through the night once and now is waking every hour or so and is just inconsolable.. will fall asleep in my arms but as soon as i lie him back down in his cot he screams and it all starts again... I resorted to having him in bed iwth me last night which seemed to settle him but I don't want to get into bad habits! I am in shock and feeling very tearful and exhausted and don't know hiw much longer i can cope with this! he is crawling and pulls himself up to his feet so when he wakes in the night he instantly pulls himself onto his knees and then to his feet and screams and there is no lying him down... is anyone else going through this or been through this.. tell me it'll end soon.. what do I do??? I'm giving him medised at night.. doesn't seem to do a thing,.. bonjela (he screams) calgel..(he screams) fozed teething rings etc etc.. oh...and he's also completely refusing to drink any milk... (he is formula fed) so I am panicking about his calcium and iron levels too.... HELP!!! I have the health visitor coming this week and will pour it all out to her (poor woman) but I thought I'd look for help here...

anyone.....anyone..... sniff :-(

My little boy started getting teeth at about 5-6month he got his 2 bottom ones together. Nows hes 7month old and the 2 top ones are nearly all the way out. Im sure hes getting another 1 at the bottom aswell.

I use Aston and Parsons powers for him teething and I think their great. There are only £2.99 from Boots or £2.35 from Tescos.

My little one has had a sore and bleeding bottom before when teething. It even went into blisters and was weeping etc. I bought a cream called Metanium. It's in a yellow tube / box and the cream is yellow too. I found it to be fantastic stuff. I thought I'd have to take him to the doctors but this cream worked wonders. I've seen it in Asda (Handsworth) and Tesco (Abbeydale Road).
