View Full Version : Commotion in town, Carver street closed off (7/7/04)?
Plain Talker 08-07-2004, 08:13 Apparently, carver St was closed off overnight.
A woman has been stabbed on carver street, from what I heard,
and a teenage female has been arrested...
any info?
(PT)
Bloody hell!
I face Carver Street and at about midnight(ish) there was a load of shouting and screaming coming from there, just around Flares and Freshmans. I had a look but it just looked like an argument between a couple of girls, there were a few guys with them as well who seemed to be trying to calm them down.
To be honest it didnt look like it was going to kick off so i just went to bed!!
I wonder if that was the beginning of what happened?
PT sadly the young woman concerned has died.
What sort of society do we live in where people settle disagreements with knives? I know that the 'liberals' of this forum will disagree but in my mind until the punishment fits the crime this situation will only escalate. Yes I do believe the capital punishment as I think the majority of the general public do.
Its now hit BBC News

Even women are at it now.. so, so sad.
My teenage daughter was in town last night, it just makes me worry more.
When will we actually start punishing people again? She's ended someone's life and finished her own.. over what? Someone looked at her in the wrong way? spilled her drink? talked to her boyfriend?
If the thought of years in prison doesn't stop someone killing, what will? Kinda scary that people are taking knives into clubs... i can only assume they are looking for trouble. Why are these people so angry?

I feel terible! Chances are that what i saw was the beginning of the argument as it involved 2 girls. Had i just stayed awake and kept my eye on it i might have been able to help the poor girl, as i have medic training.
They should lock murderers up and throw away the key, no questions asked!
Condolences to the girls family.
I agree with Mo - capital punishment.
How do you know that the threat of capital punishment would have prevented this terrible incident?
Mod: Posts about crime and punishment have been split off and can be found in this thread. (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13618)

Hmmm.. well according to the news stories the girl being questioned had carried a kitchen knife from home. Which makes me think it probably wasnt a random attack and was pre-meditated.
So your daughter is probably fine...
Oh I know that my friend
She's the least likely person in Sheffield to get involved in that sort of thing but I still worry about her being down there. Like my missus says 'we can't wrap her up in cotton wool forever'.
That poor girl was somebody's daughter.
HarrietStar 09-07-2004, 10:57 how do you know the reasons for the attack?
Who? Me? I don't.. I was just saying it makes me worry about my daughter being in town at night thats all.
AlbaKirky 09-07-2004, 11:19 Why the hell would anyone take a kitchen knife on a night out down town???? Not your general accessory is it
ultracynic 09-07-2004, 11:23 keys - check
money - check
kitchen knife - check
flares is rough as anything but i sometimes feel that if you try and point this out to people they think you are being snobbish
nothing snobbish about NOT wanting to mix with people who are likely to attack you for the merest perceived sleight!
HarrietStar 09-07-2004, 11:32 of course you worry, i'd worry if you didn't! I just meant that if it was a kitchen knife, it's unlikely that the girl was attacked for reasons like jealousy or a row, it is likely it was pre-meditated and although it is very tragic, it seems we don't know anything about why the girl felt murder was necessary. I'm not excusing it at all, but we don't know the background relationships and issues between the attacker and victim.
I agree Harrietstar. For a teenage girl to think "Oh, i musn't forget my carving knife when i go out tonight" seems very strange? Had it been a flick knife or something, then maybe she would have had it with her all the time, but not a carving knife? I honestly never thought carrying weapons would be something girls did? Men, yes i understand that there are ones out there that dont feel "tough" unless they are carrying, and im not condoning them carrying by the way, im just saying they are out there!
In my opinion nowhere is fully safe anymore, even the classy places. All it takes is to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and you never know what can happen!
Maybe the government should provide everyone with stab/ballistic vests to make us a little safer? (JOKE!)
Jamesbrown - Cheers, i spoke to them last night. I couldnt tell them much at all, but they said if they needed me further they would be intouch.
HarrietStar 09-07-2004, 13:03 i wouldn't expect either men or women to carry kitchen knives around with them unless it was for a reason - which makes me think it was pre-meditated.
as for girls carrying weapons, i guess it is for defense purposes, to make them feel stronger and less vulnerable - similar reasons to men who carry weapons i expect.
magicgem 09-07-2004, 15:48 Scary stuff! Worse when you walk past the place. Really makes you wonder about some people?
