Please see the Forum Policy on all Off-line meetings (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=136785)

I will be walking from Endcliffe Park up the Porter Valley to Porter Clough then back via the Limb Valley, Whirlow Hall Farm and Bingham Park.

Anyone fancy it? A stretch of the Limb Valley may be damp and there is a very steep climb up steps at one point but there is also a cafe and pub en route plus opportunities to duck out and get a bus back if bored with the company or tired or desperate to get some shopping done.

I will be starting at 10 from the Queen Vic monument. If anyone wants to come you can either post here or PM me.

I can't manage Saturday, but I'm up for walking on Sunday.

I hope all you Saturday-walkers have a great time! Anyone up for a walk on Sunday, as well, or instead if you can't manage Saturday?

:)

2 + beagle to add to your list please Taxman ;)

Where's the monument? Is it at the hunters bar roundabout entrance?

Yes it is and dogs are most welcome

There's a 94.7% probability that I can make it on Saturday (assuming everyone is OK with a mysterious stranger tagging along ;) )

Hmmm....I've never noticed a Queen Vic monument in Endcliffe Park...I'll just look out for a beagle

He'll be wearing his hi-vis jacket too ;)

The monument is about 50 yards in from the main entrence from Hunter Bar roundabout, I'm sure the hi-vis Beagle will enable us all to find each other

Pic of monument here

I'm almost definitely coming. (Gets more definite by the day). I'd be honoured to walk alongside a Frank Black lookalike, so make sure you turn up, BF!

I've just got back from a delightful meander around Burbage with SHsheff and Grissom (thanks again for inviting me SHsheff) and hopefully they will confirm that I wield neither an axe nor any overly offensive personality traits.

I know we agreed not to mention the axe, but you didn't say we had to lie about anything. :suspect:

:hihi:

Nah, we had a lovely walk in light drizzle, mist and low cloud (across the valley), and then clearing weather and a spot of sunshine to finish up with. Great to get out and smell the heather! And a quick bite to eat at Fox House after. Beat sitting in the house looking at the clouds (and the rain, which is falling again as I write this...). Most happy to recommend BlankFrack as a walking companion! :)

(repeated from health and safety awareness thread)

Taxman - would you say saturday's walk is a 'good pair of walking shoes', 'dog walking boots' or 'proper hiking boots' kind of event?

Are there any 'escape' points en route? and where are they?

I was thinking about this earlier. I would normally do this walk in my comfy, well worn in, everyday walking boots. However there is one stretch at the top of the Limb Valley that was very muddy last time I went down so I'd be more tempted to wear my heavier duty boot.

There are a few points where people could dip out. They could decide to get to Forge Dam Cafe and simply double back, or get to Ringinglow near the Norfolk Arms Pub and catch a bus, or after exiting Whirlow Hall Farm onto Ringinglow Road, buses can be caught. No-one is going to be force marched. If people want to have a couple of pints at the Norfolk Arms then they can, and make their own way afterwards. Similarly some people might want to visit the Farm Shop for some free range eggs.

I haven't checked the weather but we aren't going far from civilisation!!

Another thumbs up from me - BlankFrack doesn't carry an axe

Although SHsheff seemed convinced I was gonna push her over a cliff :(

And yes I can also confirm that SHsheff is indeed female and not a bloke as some people seem to think

Pics taken on our mountain expedition can be seen here :

and follow the Burbage link from there

Thanx again for the invite and the history lessons !!!

I can't believe you said that (hehe) - I thought we were friends! I can't help it if I nervously look over one shoulder before going within ten foot of a drop, can I? :P

I've just been roped in to an exciting trip to London so no walky goodness for me this weekend after all. Sorry for any inconvenience :(

Special apologies to Purdyamos - hopefully someone else in the group will also bear a passing resemblance to a member of Pixies to lessen your inevitable disappointment at my absence. Perhaps Strix's beagle looks a bit like Kim Deal?

Strix

Does Kim Deal have fuzzy chops and big dangly ears then? :suspect:

Please dont hang around too long for me even for a gentle amble in the park - too many very late nights followed by extremely early mornings with little sleep inbetween has taken its toll and I'm most unlikely to be in my best humour.

Sorry, taxman. I'm taking your thread off-topic too, and that'll never do... I'm not used to all these rules and regulations; we're a lot less uptight in the Knitting Group ;) .

Well another successful walk I think without a mad axe murderer in sight.

The five of us plus 2 dogs had a nice ramble up the Porter and down the Limb and met Alpacca, Llamas, piglets, horses and assorted other dogs.

And a pint in the pub to finish off.

Thanks to all who came:thumbsup:

I really enjoyed the walk. I've done the Porter so many times, but not with a botany expert on hand to point out the plants and fungi (and yes, as I said I would, I've forgotten most of it already!) Taxman modestly left out that we saw a big picnic table he'd made when a ranger, complete with barbecue burn-holes in the top. It was a pity the BBC lied so reliably about the weather, until we reached the 3000 steps, then we were grateful it was cool and damp.

I've had a packed fortnight meeting lots of forummers, so it was great meeting The Strixes and Tamarind.

It was also great fun sharing the walk with the four-footed superstars Adelaide and Brude. This could be the start of a beautiful friendship; though heaven knows what the children would look like!

We'll find out soon if Brude gets his way

I didn't check this thread before we left, so I hadn't realised it was you Purdyamos!!

It was great to meet some new people, and a new friend for Brude :D, and next time I'm determined to ensure I get to hear all of Taxman's botanical info - which I missed this time whilst trying to keep a stray Beagle under control :(

We went home the long way round, with a labrador sleepily resting her chops on the retracted boot cover :hihi: Thanks for the cup of tea Tamarindl :)

It'll probably take a week to get the mud out of Brude's hi-vis, and I'm hoping I'm still fit for Edale tomorrow, but we had a fantastic walk covering some bits we've been to before, but had no idea it was possible to link them all up!

Fantastic group Taxman & Wendy :) Thanks for starting it all!!

(Where's these piglit pics then Tamarind? :) )
