View Full Version : 06:30am bottle clanging wake up call
I moved into West One last week and every single morning I am woken up at about half 6 by the bins being emptied at one of the nearby bars. Even with the windows shut it is so loud it sounds like the bottles are being tipped on you. I am on the Cavendish St side and from my window an unable to tell which bar it is (i'm sure its the same one)
Does anybody who lives in or around West One know which bar it is and is it worth complaining to the council, even if they emptied it every other day it would be a lot better.
Thanks, Adam

richynomates 09-07-2004, 08:32 i don't mean to appear rude, but what is the point of moving into the most saturated part of town for bars and restaurants, and then complain about the noise they make? it was widely known that the West One development would have bars at the lower level, and with the Swim Inn (which will be the one you heard) being there long before West One was inhabited, maybe it's something that should have been thoguht about. i suppose the residents of the Glossop Road baths will be complaining about the tram, as much as the residents of West Point are complaining about lack of parking.
Sorry, but it annoys me that people want the buzz of the city centre, without any of the noise that goes with it.
theflyingfish 09-07-2004, 09:25 but the right to peaceful enjoyment of our own property is enshrined in law, so yes it IS worth making a complaint if they are waking you every morning at 6.30 am, IMO
I'm with Richy on this one, you can't move the centre of one of the busiest cities in the country and expect peace and tranquility.
If it's bugging you that much, please do us all a favour and try a polite word with the landlord first, rather than pursue a complaint through the council. Sounds harsh, but I'd rather my council tax wasn't used to make up for your lack of research/common sense. The guy's only trying to make a living and was there before you......
richynomates 09-07-2004, 10:00 there is an implicit right to peaceful enjoyment of a property, but in relation to the situation to the property. a complaint of noise associated with the running of a bar is likely to look as stupid in West One as a complaint by the farmer who lives on the central reservation of the M62 complaining about Eddie Stobart going past too many times daily.
But if you do complain, you might aswell mention the tram making noise, junkies shooting up in the car park, drunks singing and the polic helicopter on match days. in fact- let's complain to move the central business area to High Peak - it won't interfere with people's lives too much there..
ultracynic 09-07-2004, 11:20 i also hear this noise (it is from swimm inn) but it doesn't really bother me.
however, I feel sorry for anyone that lives above the airconditioning unit at the back of swimm inn as that is so loud and appears to be on nearly all the time
The tram and other noise during the day and into the early hours i don't mind, you get used to that and I expected it when I chose to live here. This however was not expected and is almost deafening compared to background noise. As for the council tax thing, I pay more than enough council tax just to live here. I too can hear the air conditioning at the swim in but that does not bother me.
HarrietStar 09-07-2004, 11:29 unfortunatly when the planners were deciding on the development, they would have taken into account all the surrounding land uses in the area and the noise which is a consequence of the bars and resturants. The development itself incorporates bars and resturants and the planners would have weighed up the benefits of the development and its location with the drawbacks such as noise and anti-social behaviour in the area. It is unlikely the council or landlord can do anything about the noise which comes from running businesses such as bars and pubs. But, perhaps you could have a word with the offending business and ask that they wait until later in the morning to take rubbish out, or ask that they do it more quietly?
Whilst people living in these developments complaining about the noise from 'nightlife' businesses that existed before the apartment blocks were built annoy me too, I think when we are talking 6:30 in the morning he has a fair point!
It's not just the fact that it's 6:30 am it just seems so unnecessary to bring a huge dustbin wagon round to collect bottles every single morning, surely they can't use that many bottles in a day that their bins need emptying every single day.
It's probably done at 6:30 because the bin lorry wouldn't be able to get through the traffic/parked cars if it came any later.

At least your bin men actually come! That's better service than we get from the Council refuse department :loopy:
richynomates 09-07-2004, 11:45 Having lived in that area for 2 years, i can speak from experience, and you will get used to the 0630 bins - wait 'til summer when the bin crew come at 0530 so they can finish earlier!
if the bin crews come later, all access roads are blocked with parked cars, and also people then moan that this sort of service shouldn't be conducted in the rush-hour. So it is a no win situation, but as it is a city centre, it isn't unreasonable to expect noise 24/7. I can imagine now that if they do only come once/twice weekly, the complaints in that particular area will turn to rat infestations etc. just count yourself luckier than the Glossop Roads Baths residents that are right ontop of the Swim Inn - they paid upwards of 200,000 for the pleasure.
ultracynic 09-07-2004, 12:19 Does anyone know anything about those flats opposite the back of swimm inn?
i saw a fire near there yesterday and some general commotion - they look a bit scarey to me
Ah! Now this is different - if you are talking about bottle bins being emptied into lorries you will be able to do something about this - it is easily avoidable.
It sounds like they are getting the early morning cleaners to empty the bottle bins outside bins for the binmen, which is admittedly better than doing it at 1 am! It would be better still if they did it at 10.00 am. ;)
It is true that you should put up with the lifestyle, but there will be a restriction within the planning consent and possibly the liquor licence about hours of deliveries. It is likely to restrict them to after 8.00 am and not on Sundays or Bank Holidays.
This is a pretty standard and reasonable planning condition.
Speak nicely to the Landlord of the Swimm Inn first, but if you get no luck, the Planning Dep't and the Environmental Health Dep't (Shiva Prasaad) will be able to help.
I used to live in the flats behind the Cavendish on the second floor, so the bottle lorry was right outside my window. It collects bottle from the Cavendish, s1 (was o'eils back then) and bia hoi (was revolution). As much as I expected noise where we were living, it really was a shock the first night there at 5am I awoke to one of the loudest things i've ever heard. I did get used to it, waking up every morning. I don't think anyone would expect to hear something that loud at that time in the morning. It was horrible.

Except the farm was there long before the motorway...

I live in Royal Plaza and i only tend to hear them on a monday mornings. Doesn't really bother me tho,i'm out of the flat for 6 a.m during the week.
magicgem 09-07-2004, 15:40 I had the same until recently when I lived behind the forum.
I did grumble about from time to time but I didnt feel too guilty as many of those bottles would have belonged to me and my friends hehehe.
Wait until they have another concert time thing on the green-my room shook from the last one-not good when I had a hangover! hehe!
It's the price you pay for city centre living. It could be worse, it could be a 24 hour city centre that you chose to live in. ;)

Apologies for asking a very trainspottery question - is the glass from bars/pubs/clubs recycled? Is there any legislation regarding this? Would occur to me that they must go through a serious amount of glass which would make lots of sense for recycling.
A.B.Yaffle 13-07-2004, 17:50 I was wondering the very same thing at the weekend when I was in the Swim Inn. They do get through an awful lot of small glass bottles, and I was thinking surely there be a more efficient way to do it. Is it that some drinks wouldn't last in the big barrels, is it that the drinks manufacturers want to sell drinks in bottles to display labels, or is it that customers just like to hold a bottle instead of a glass? It does seem very wasteful!

I'm sorry you must have got me confused with someone who works in a pub? :D
If I were to take a guess then I would say yes there is a process for recycling.
I used to work in a restaurant and the bottles that belonged to coca-cola (coke, sprite etc) we collected to be washed and used again but the rest were just thrown away.
LittleWitch 14-07-2004, 10:49 I would have thought that any apartments built in the city centre near to all the pubs and clubs etc would have been sound proofed to prevent you being disturbed by outside noise. I've stayed in apartments in Barcelona and Germany, right in the middle of everything, and, unless you had the window open, couldn't hear a thing. They must have better sound proofing over there or something.
If it doesn't get any better, go back to the estate agents you bought the apartment from, and demand your money back. Customer satisfaction and all that....:D
