It's not that they can't talk to each other - have you any idea how big a computer system would be needed to link the whole of the Civil Service together? Quite simply, the legal requirement is for the person making the claim, of any relevant person to inform JC+ of any changes in circumstances. The relevant person in case, would actually either be the Prison Service, or the Courts, as it's highly unlikely that the client would be able to contact JC+.
When the prisoner is released, and should he/she need to make another claim, the overpayment, if identified, would still be on the system and be recovered at a set rate from their benefit.
The only way to stop this, is for the Prison Service to contact a JC+ Head Office admin contact, who can then identify the office where the claim was made, and then start to shut the claim down. Housing Benefit and Council Tax benefit would automatically be affected by this too (not necessarily stopped as there may be dependants).
If Jobcentre Plus aren't told of any changes, it can't stop the claim.
never wrong 18-08-2006, 14:28 The framework for this as been in place for years the prison service asks every person that goes into jail for Ni number and then its entered into the computer and any beenefits due are cancelled but now everybody tells them they dont know there number and therefore no entry benefits carry on

Wrong. The Prison Service have no access to the payment processing system.

No. They don't have that facility at all.

happyhippy 18-08-2006, 15:19 how do you know that never wrong is wrong:o
Because I worked for the Employment Service, in Jobcentres and at Head Office, and latterly Jobcentre Plus and the Corporate Centre of DWP until very recently. And my other half(ish) still works for them.
so why not just say that then

No I'm not (re PM's), but we'll leave that there, shall we? It should be remembered as well that in the case of JSA, a maximum of 2 weeks benefit would be lost, as the prisoner would be unable to sign on at the right time, unless the sentence were for 21 days (maximum) or less.
For other benefits of course, that wouldn't apply.
never wrong 18-08-2006, 17:09 it,s me again so in the light of things £13.000,000 over three years is not a out of the way figure is every prisoner gets from one to thirteen days they would have got it anyway so there is no need for a big hue and cry. I hope you can grasp what I AM TRYING TO WRITE

Benefit entitlement stops on the day they enter prison.
I think this is outrageous:
"Figures released by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) show that over the past three years an estimated £13 million in income support, jobseekers allowance and various other social security benefits has been paid to inmates serving prison sentences.
Astonishingly, a DWP spokesperson said ‘We have only just started producing the data on this – but we are not complacent’!
The Government has no idea exactly how much taxpayers’ money has been spent on rewarding thieves, rapists, murderers and other felons over the past few years nor does it have a plan to deal with the problem.
Every day the tax take goes up and up and - it would seem in direct correlation – the level of competence and fiscal discipline goes down and down. "
