People miss the point when talking about 80s music. The two best periods were 1980-82 (the dawn of synth-pop and new romanticism) and 1988-89 (the birth of acid house and pretty much all that we call 'dance music' today).
The time inbetween was all about bloated excess, stadium rock, 'digital' technology and the hideous self-indulgence that was Live Aid. Whether you agree with the sentiments or not, that concert was single-handedly responsible for prolonging the careers of numerous clapped-out old farts and is why so many people have such bad musical memories of the decade.

I'll post my top ten songs after I've had a long lie down......

I agree that 83/84 was a pretty rotten time but it all got better in 1985 when the Jesus and Mary chain came along.

And all the ace cutiepop bands in 86 and 87.

Ah, happy times :)

Anyhoo, back on track, I'm guessing that this thread wouldn't welcome "Steaming Train" by Talulah Gosh as a suggestion so how's about "Don't You Want Me" by Human League or "All Of My Heart" by ABC

How about a bit of blancmange?........living on the ceiling....don't tell me.
or echo and the bunnymen...killing time?
Also really like mad world by tears for fears.
Even dolce vita by ryan paris brings back great memories.

Love all 80's music up to around late 84,84 had some good tunes, reflex duran duran, flock of seagulls, two tribes frankie goes to hollywood to name just afew.
It all went a bit pear shaped after that.
Used to think i was a sad old git for liking it (iam but...) it's wierd cause i'm turning into my parents,1980's top of the pops on my dad saying "you can't tell what theyre singing blah blah blah.......i find myself saying it about alot of todays music. But i'm at an age where i don't care what people think, and hearing the old tunes brings back great memories..........The 80's a happy decade for me.

technically yes
BUT
soft cells is the best
and i think (not sure) but all the later covers are based on soft cells version? and never as good

i hear a song on the radio lately with the "honk honk" sound from it as the backing, wossat? gurls aloud or something?

Bohemian Rhapsody came out in 1979, so strictly speaking that's a 70s song.

As others have pointed out Bo Rhap was released in 1975. It was that year's Christmas Number 1. It spent 17 weeks on the chart.

It is unique in being the only single to be a number one in 4 different years. After the death of Freddie Mercury, it made number one again in 1991 (double A side with These Are The Days Of Our Lives) spending 14 weeks on the chart.

Thus it was number one in 1975, 1976, 1991 and 1992.

As for songs released in the 1980s try:-

1 Broken Land by the Adventures
2 Hey! Manhatten by Prefab Sprout
3 Sunshine on Leith by the Proclaimers
4 Come Live With Me by Heaven Seventeen
5 Mind of a Toy by Visage
6 The Voice by Ultravox
7 18 Carat Love Affair by Associates
8 Suedehead by Morrissey
9 Being With You by Smokey Robinson
10 Alone by Heart

Aargh! Anyone who describes Queen's biggest hit as "Bo Rhap" deserves to be shot (especially if they're Ben Elton) or be forced to choke to death on "Spag Bol".

It's called "Bohemian Rhapsody" - although a challenge to simple-minded folk, it really isn't that difficult or time-consuming to spell, is it?

That's interesting - I regard the 80s as being absolutely the WORST decade for music and talent.... totally forgettable Stock, Aitken and Slaughterhouse rubbish - each to our own, I guess! The era was only saved by The Smiths - and possibly the Jesus and Mary Chain.
