View Full Version : The Wicker Man remake 2006
Well, seeing as how hollywood has raped and pillaged another classic movie turning it into an utter shambles of a film for the masses in 2006 I just had to say how crap it looks from viewing the trailer.
Now, for people who have seen the edward woodward original- how good was it?
It was excellent was it not.
Did it involve a car accident in the original hmmm?
No you say- the new one does.....
Does the original involve the ghost of rowan hmm?
No again you say- the new bastardised version does....
Can you see where I am going with this?
I'd rather rub rotting manure in my eyes than have to watch the remake in all honesty.
Beakerzoid 21-08-2006, 21:36 Not forgetting that the new version is a 12A........
...oh dear!
guest121 21-08-2006, 22:32 How can they do that - i want to and will cry at the disgrace this is bound to be.
fox20thc 21-08-2006, 22:36 I must wholeheartedly agree Ang. Ed in the Wickerman is not to be surpassed by any yankee crap with a cgi budget.
I for one will be watching my directors cut at home in protest.
when does this come out??
Sweetcheeks 21-08-2006, 23:59 Why do film makers need to remake everything, usually doing a sub-standard version of the original. Have they no original ideas anymore, or is it just easier to steal other people`s work, in a similar vein to the music industry. The one exception to the rule that I can remember was John Carpenter`s version of The Thing (from Another World) which used superb special effects to enhance the creepy horror of the original. This however is a one-off, as most remakes are worthless shadows of the original films. Oh, sod it! After all that clap-trap, I just remembered another, Nosferatu! Time for bed and a lobotomy.:hihi:
Beakerzoid 22-08-2006, 00:14 There are, on occasion, remakes that are worthwhile, and either offer a new take, or exceed the original. Some examples are..
Scarface,
Insomnia,
Ocean's 11,
Dawn of the Dead (not better - just a good alternate take)
Cape Fear
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (again, not better - just a good alternate take)
The Fly
Ben Hur
The Magnificent Seven
A Few Dollars More
Solaris
However, what makes these films stand out from the tired rehashes that we see too much of is that a bit of thought has gone into adapting, referencing, and paying homage to the original, whilst offering something new without dumbing it down.
Ark-Seven 22-08-2006, 08:55 i think the best bit of this is that it stars nicholas 'cage'
now is it a remake of the film - or a new film based on the book & screenplay.
or whats the difference.
now psycho is a remake of an old film.same characters, exact same story line.
surely the film is a modern interpretation of an old story set in a modern setting.
Banjo Griner 22-08-2006, 09:20 Cape Fear
The Magnificent Seven
A Few Dollars More
I agree with Cape Fear, but Kurosawa's films are legendary and, much as I love Leone's Spag Westerns, there's no way that the reworks were better than Yojimbo and Seven Samurai - Kurosawa is just too much of a cinematic genius to be bettered by anyone. Plus Toshiro Mifune is the greatest actor who ever walked the Earth.

ok Cape Fear - impressive remake.
but surely the others are re-interpretations of a story. they may have been based on seven samurai but they weren't a remake. otherwise it would have been full of samurais & set in japan or china.
after all never say never again is a so called remake of thunderball.

I wasn't saying they were better than the Kurosawa originals, just that they were good reinterpretations which offered a different view of the same story. The fact that the spag western 'remakes' are so great show that some remakes can work.

You'll notice I called them 'reworks' - by doing so I acknowledged the fact that the stories were transposed to another time and place, yet the characters and plot (the main parts of the film) remained essentially the same. And samurais only existed in Japan, not China.

BasilRathbon 22-08-2006, 12:14 Back to The Wicker Man - I too think this is a pointless and atrocious remake of a film that was pretty much perfect in its own right.
Haven't seen the trailers yet but according to internet gossip, Lord Summerisle is now a woman running some loony lesbian commune, there's killer bees (?) somewhere in the plot and Edward Woodward's character is no longer a virgin.
Needless to say, the music's bound to be far far worse than the mesmeric folk of the original.
Well I don't like the original so whatever I think doesn't really matter.
12 angry men was a decent remake also I shall add.
As for Banjo Griner, you know you are such a purist ;)

Heheh - hello Howard...
Yes I'm a complete **** when it comes to films, but it does mean I've got specialist knowledge - I'm also obsessed with Kurosawa.
Cool, carry on chief
Without your input, there are several films I would have never bothered with.
But you are a purist, just an objective taunt
Makes me feel sick when I see those ads on the buses with that iconic image of the burning Wicker Man! How very dare they!
What's so great about The Wicker Man is the whole cheap creakiness of it, it makes it creepy and almost real. You can even still see the actual stumps of the thing if you go up to Whithorn! And then the cave where Rowan is found is actually an incredibly important Christian site that people make pilgrimages too, which makes it even more sinister and 'real' to me. :o
Plus that soundtrack is ace, with all those weird little folk songs (by Magnet, apparently). And it has Christopher Lee in it!
Stupid f***in Cage as well. He's useless.
:hihi:
carcrash 22-08-2006, 21:19 I watched yojimbo the other day for the first time in years. Great film.

I love the original soundtrack- they got it just right to compliment the film I though.. and the legend that is Chris Lee is in it was well... its just one of the best films all the time.
Its just a shame that hollywood loves to defile the best films of all time for a under age audience.
I think this remake is a travesty and I will never ever ever watch it. They could never get the knitwear to look quite like that again.

Completely agree - never gonna watch it. The original is brilliant.
So true about the knitwear :hihi: :hihi:
steve_sufc 25-08-2006, 15:50 If it's a film of Nicholas Cage being burnt alive for 2 hours I'm definitely watching it.
donuticus 25-08-2006, 16:49 I do hope nicholas cage is a method actor !!!!

Have you got that cool new CD package that has the songs and then the incidental music? It's got bits of dialogue on the incidental music. Good prank potential there. ;)
Why have they turned Summerisle into some women's community too? That turns the whole film into something with a sinister political message and ruins it!
Spiritfly 27-08-2006, 16:29 I'm sick and tired of remakes, the fog, the omen, wickerman? bloody directors with no originality.
melthebell 27-08-2006, 17:13 ive not seen the new version yet, it fills me with trepidation and fear, not cos i think itll be scary but cos i do love the original version, and fear theyre gonna butcher the memory of it :(
Bikertec 11-09-2006, 19:13 The Wicker Man remake is the biggest pile of pants to come out of America, I am ashamed to say I wasted a hour and a half watching this crap. The only thing that ties it in with the original is a copper looking for the missing girl on a island and second is getting cooked at the end. The rest of the film just doesn't make sense at all, not even a good horror film utter utter garbage.

bernie54 12-09-2006, 00:54 Didn't think it was too bad not a patch on the original though, did anyone notice the poster in the police station of a young Edward Woodward with "missing" wrote under his picture, thought it was a tongue in cheek take on it, don't think they would still have missing posters up after 30 years even for a missing policeman.
donuticus 12-09-2006, 01:04 Did like the fact that despite there being no phone signal or landlines they had setup a website. Hollywood dont you just love it.

Especially not when the remake is set in a different Island off a different continent.
As for the misogyny apparently prevalent in the remake I vaguely recall reading that Mel Gibson’s company was producing it, misogyny would hardly surprising from a film that ultra conservative, uber catholic, anti-semitic nutjob had a hand in.

I knew it would be s***e so I just bought the original from Amazon instead.

That really is just taking the p***. The film not you:)
