Having searched for a particular leisure management post-grad course I want to do, Sheffield is the only Uni in the UK that offers what I'm looking for so am seriously thinking about going there for a year.

Are there any Sheffield current students/graduates here who would like to tell me all about what Sheffield has to offer? Being from Scotland, I don't know many English cities and have never been to Sheffield (though the cities I have visited so far were great!).

Looking for info such as

- Accommodation - is it easy to find places to let with other students?
- Plenty student employment (part-time) opportunities?
- Nightlife (get my priorities right!) - any good? Better than Glasgow?!?! :hihi:
- Health clubs? What's the Uni gym like?
- Easy to get to Peak District? Is there plenty mountain biking?!
- Transport? Cheap?
- Is it a friendly and safe city? Are the Scottish made welcome?! (hope so!)
- What is the university area like?

Would be quite daunting heading off down on my own and not knowing anyone so any info helping me make this decision would be much appreciated! (couldn't resist this wee chap)

I think my mate is probably doing the same leisure management course at sheffield uni now. Seems like a reasonable course.

Sheffield is great to live in, low street crime compared to leeds/manchester/london. Nice green areas, close to the countryside, reasonable shops and great nightlife.

there's lots of threads on here about most of those things so get reading!

I'll just add: Great for mountain biking - you could prob cycle from uni to the peaks in about 20 mins/half an hour but if you live in crookes it'd be even closer.

Uni gym isn't that cheap but facilities are good - if you just join off peak (7-5 M-F and all day at weekends) it's a lot cheaper - the swimming pool is great.

It is fairly easy to find places to share with other students, it can be easier to form a group first and look for a place together, but you shouldn't have any problems finding one room for yourself either. There are loads of specialised private letting agents, estate agents and check out the university accomodation site too. Being a post-grad you may qualify for university accomodation.

Again, you shouldn't have problems finding work, check www.shef.ac.uk/careers and use OPUS to find work.

The sheffield nightlife is pretty good with loads of pubs and clubs and gig venues such as the leadmill and corporation. Oh and the classic rock bar too :) I can't cpmpare to glasgow because I haven't been!

The uni sports facilities are ok, but in my opinion, quite expensive. Sheffield as a city is great for sport and you can buy a pass which allows you to use facilities at Don Valley, Ponds Forge and Hillsborough sports centres.

From the West of sheffield it is very easy to get to the Peak District and there is a great cycling centre at the Derwent Resevoir

Transport is reasonably priced with a good tram and bus network. Taxis are quite cheap.

I find sheffield very safe and friendly, especially near to the uni. A friend of mine from scotland studied at hallam uni and had no problems :)

The uni area imo is one of the nicest in the city, very green and a nice atmosphere. areas near to the uni - broomhill and ecclesall road are good shopping areas too :)

hope this helps, harriet

Thanks for the advice guys! I thought I was too late for Scottish funding but apparently not so I am applying to the course! Will be visiting Sheffield for the first time some time soon so if I've got one day, what places should I definitely check out? (apart from the uni!)
