View Full Version : What are the Chances of Wednsday gaining Promotion this season ?
Lester_Bigot 20-08-2006, 21:54 What do you think? personally I think they will finish jusy below mid table ( 15th)
But what about getting promotion? this is what all owls fans want
Take part in the poll
Gypsy Hack 20-08-2006, 21:59 As much as I'd like the six-point express join blades in the premiership, there ain't a cat in hell's chance.

7th would suit me :hihi:
God helps us if they beat a good side, they all seem quite giddy on here after beating Plymouth :D
A.B.Yaffle 21-08-2006, 00:33 Very little chance of them getting promoted. I guess they will be in even more trouble by Christmas when Sturrock has moved onto another club with a more supportive chairman.
Jazzybmzoo 21-08-2006, 08:40 7th would suit me :hihi:

Yup, with 10 injured players. I think most PREMIER league teams would struggle after going 1 down with a casualty list like that.
fnkysknky 21-08-2006, 09:03 My money is on the seaside donkey.
We can hope of promotion, but at the minute I don't think our players could pass off as a Premiership team. I know it may seem a bit pessimistic, but we aint got Hirsty, Waddle and co anymore have we?
Notice how piggy-united fans post more on Wednesday threads??:loopy:
Owls fans may seem giddy because we carved out a great result! with our depleted team at the moment an away win is fantastic!
Well Done Wednesday!
fnkysknky 21-08-2006, 09:26 It's a poll and it doesn't say it's restricted to Wendy fans anywhere does it.
lol!!! It was posted at 10.47pm so i guess he might have been to the pub!
erm- no chance- i think they will struggle to avoid relagation, its going to be a long season for both teams in sheffield!
Jazzybmzoo 21-08-2006, 10:45 My money is on the seaside donkey.
I'm guessing you'd be right at home with them, yes?
fnkysknky 21-08-2006, 11:25 I'm guessing you'd be right at home with them, yes?
I was the Frankie Dettori of the Skeggy beach donkey world..... you coming out bank holiday (or do you even know who this is :))

Ha, ha. I'm probably gonna drop meself in it here, but some bird in a club (many moons ago) once said I looked like the man, himself. I am fortuantely 5' 11" so height wasn't so much of an issue and I didn't know quite how to take it, plus I think she looked like a young Gloria Hunniford!
Did you know he does his own range of tinned tomatoes?
How random are we today?

The penny drops...would you be one of the Heely massive? Mr Ibiza, perhaps?
fnkysknky 21-08-2006, 11:55 Indeed - although we all went
Lester_Bigot 21-08-2006, 12:42 Another question for Blades fans.
This year there will be no local Derbys (Blades V Barnsley, plus Blades V some other local teams)
Does that bother you ?
Or are you revelling in the fact that you will be entertaining the likes of Chelsea, Man Utd. etc instead and are the only local team to be doing this
And where did the extra 10,000 fans appear from last Sat against Liverpool, could it be that a few Wednesday fans popped over to see some premiership football, before heading back to Hillsboro next week to watch the likes of last years relegated premiership teams
or
Enjoying a full capacity crowd of 5,000 when attending the away match at Colchester
Owls fans may seem giddy because we carved out a great result! with our depleted team at the moment an away win is fantastic!
Well Done Wednesday!:thumbsup:I'll second that!
tinsel_ninja 21-08-2006, 14:13 Both Sheffield teams will struggle this season.
United to drop (heavily) and the Owls to finish ~18th.
There. I know how to make myself popular i my adopted home. :)
Not this season, but you never know,it would be great to have both Sheffield teams in the top flight. But good luck.
Lester_Bigot 21-08-2006, 18:18 Not this season, but you never know,it would be great to have both Sheffield teams in the top flight. But good luck.
Is that so the blades get their usual 6 point, when playing the Owls during the season ?
The chairman has to pull his finger out or Sturrock will be off if someone comes in for him.
A 5 year contract is needed, imagine if we had Maclean & the rest all fit, a settled side & not 14 fit players.
He's a miracle worker with what he's done & Allen needs to see that!

Robbie Loving 22-08-2006, 10:49 Yup, with 10 injured players. I think most PREMIER league teams would struggle after going 1 down with a casualty list like that.
but what your forgetting is, you still had 10 first teamers in the side

5 years for a manager who always seems drunk? signs some very dodgy players? scraped you in to the league one play offs playing "long ball football"?
there might be a reason for all the unfit/injured players? training techniques? which im sure Young PS overlooks. (although rumours from southampton was that he laid on benches for full training sessions)
also you want a fit maclean? who has never scored at this level except from a penalty (granted he has only played about 16 games, but still plenty of time)

Always drunk eh? On the basis of what some dodgy rumours from Southampton where they wanted him to fail (even though his record there would have kept them up). Lets break down your other 'points'
1. Dodgy players - Right Sturrock has bought a few players that didn't exactly set the world on fire (Rocastle, Graham etc) but methinks a certain Mr Warnock isn't exempt from a few now is he (Horsfield, Cullip etc). Except at least we didn't blow millions on them.
2. Long Ball Football - Now i know it's been a while since your 4th Division title but in the lower leagues i don't think you'll find many Brazilians playing. If there are they'd be booted from pillar to post, so long ball football is the only way to get out of those god forasken divisions. Anyway you seem to have conveniently wiped the successful Bassett days of big hoofs up to Deane and Agana. But then again it's a case of porcine selected memory loss.
3. McClean - Steve McClean has never had a proper run in the Championship so for you or anyone else to judge him is hardly right. He's either been thrown back in too early (like last season) or had a run up front on his own or with a different strike partner all in the 10 or so Championship games he's played!
I know you've got a bite here but you don't half talk some crap. Oh and about those other rumours it's BRITISH GAS, not GRITTISH BASS remember that ;)

Talking of extra fans where did the extra 20,000 fans come from on wednesdays promotion year? :loopy: short memories some people

Yup, at least we can call on an extra 20,000 fans. And for any Wednesdayites who actually set foot in the Lane...well they're not Wednesdayites are they? Robbie - that means you. I know you're a repressed blue at heart!
Oh, and our BASIC attendances will still blow yours out of the water a la last year when you got promoted (at least I think you did) and we finished what 19th?
Go Tottenham!

the always drunk part was coming from the players and fans, not the club itself...... but thats by the by.
anyways.................
for your points
1. every manager signs poor players, there is no denying that. but i can't recall a wednesday player that sturrock has signed that has made a big impact at hall, I'd say coughlan is possibly your most succesful signing under PS' era, and he hasn't exactly pulled tree's up. (btw loan signings don't really count so don't bring kenwynne "i can barely score above league one level" up)
2. you don't have to be brazilian to play "football" or even pass the ball. there is no doubting it was the long ball system that got you up, but ive never seen a decent passing game from wednesday for a few years now. although i though lunt would change all that (doesn't seem to be the case from what i hear so far)
you go on about the bassett era, no united fans have not forgotten it, but again thats in the past...... and im sure we are talking about wednesday here not united?? I have not come on this thread to compare united and wednesday, as there is no point, as it stands the blades are better, lets face that fact. I have come on this thread to air my views as a football fan who occasionally goes to watch the grunters over in s6
3. So what if McLean has never had a run in your side in the championship? (although im sure had had about 8 games on trot at end of last season, although im prob wrong) if he was as good as some wednesday fans would have you believe wouldn't he fit in with any striker you play with him? or be back on his feet. i know it is daft t compare but im going to....... if thierry henry got injured and came back and could only score from the spot, do you reckon the arsenal fans would be a bit worried? exspecially after about 16 games or so? i think they would be.
Jazzybmzoo 22-08-2006, 13:38 but what your forgetting is, you still had 10 first teamers in the side
What!? 10 first teamers & what else?! If they had been injured, tired or played badly than what do we do? We had no subs?! Seriously.
Is that so the blades get their usual 6 point, when playing the Owls during the season ?
No it would be great for Sheffield.
Robbie Loving 22-08-2006, 13:38 Robbie - that means you. I know you're a repressed blue at heart!

I know it isn't an ideal situation at all, but wednesday fans go on about itm like there was only a couple of first teamers. but there was in fact 10. yes i know the situation about the subs bench, but you have to remember, one of your subs came on and scored

What's with all the Paul Sturrock bashing? Personally I think he's done a god damn good job so far, where would we be if we still had Chris Turner in charge? Down in League 2 I wouldn't mind betting. Give the guy a chance will ya!!!!!!

woah woah woah, there was no doubting turner needed to go. im not saying sturrock is a bad manager, but i think he is tactically inept (along the same lines as warnock sometimes, but i did like our formation on open day of season :D)

I would never bash Sir Paul, if you read further back i've been sticking up for him. It was just a bit of a sarcy comment for Robbie_Lovin's benefit that i couldn't resist :D.
I'm sure if you go back and read the earlier posts you'll understand

Couldn't agree more, luv. Bottom line: Sturrock in little over two years, with little 2 no resources has got us out of the sh*t, kept us in the Championship and the way we are playing at the moment, if we'd got a fully fit squad, WOULD, be challenging! How its gonna pan out, who knows, but of all the managers we've had lately (& lets face it we've had far too many) he is the best and most equipped to kick us on.
If we are to get some financial backing, as are the rumours of late, we will be back. No question!
UP THE OWLS! WE LOVE THE WEDNESDAY!!

Yeah but his tactical choices have been sevearly limited to 5-5-0 seeing as we have no strikers. Even Champ Manager doesn't have that formation because it'd be touted as being far too unrealistic if all your strikers were injured. Maybe next years....

According to soccernet you are playing a 4-5-1 tonight against Wrexham :o
How are you ever going to score goals putting a young kid up front , he happens to be my 2nd cousin btw so I am hoping he does well but its
wrexham 1 wendy 0 already :gag:
Lester_Bigot 23-08-2006, 20:01 The Blades lost 2 - 0 last night to the mighty Spurs
The owls are losing 2-0 to the mighty wrexham as we speak
3-1...... :)
Attendance 8047
4-1:)
Attendance now about 5237 I should imagine.;)
Lester_Bigot 23-08-2006, 21:15 There were a few goals at Hillsboro tonight
No complaints from the owls about a 0-0 bore draw

As someone has already pointed out on another thread madowl, at least that's one cup out of the way so you can concentrate on the league with less chance of unnecessary injuries to the skeletal squad you are lumbered with.
It's a crap cup anyway.

Am I not right in thinking it's about 13 players were down on now?

Now the first part of your reply was a well thought out response to the question and I would agree that you have somewhere between a slim to none chance.
Now the second part is wishful thinking by a somewhat bitter individual who is devastated by the fact that not only are your chances slim to none, but you will not get the chance anytime soon to visit BDTBL. While SUFC shall be welcoming Man. Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool and the like you will have to look forward to, in probability, years of welcoming Plymouth, Colchester and Burnley unless of course you really balls it up and you'll be rolling out the red carpet for Yeovil Town, Gillingham and Crewe. Oh dear. :D

You are most welcome Mr Brooks. I was going to add to my original post that at least you can hope to welcome the 'top' sides as you still have the Cups to play in. I can of course now amend that to Cup after the debacle of Wrexham.
As for your wagers just what constitutes 'large' in the mind of a deluded Fowls fan. :P
