When I was a youngster I was hooked on reading Tintin & Asterix books! They were the best things ever. Im also not ashamed to admit that I still have almost the whole collection's :P
But I always enjoyed the Tintin stories that little bit more because they were more realistic stories.
Did anyone else read these? If so what was your favourite adventure?
I loved The red sea sharks & Tintin on the moon.
You might be interested to know that there's currently a major exhibition at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich called 'The Adventures Of Tintin At Sea'. Loads of original artwork and stuff I believe. I'm going down in a couple of weeks to see it.

I think I started out enjoying Tintin the most, but as I got older I began to really appreciate the humour and subtle jokes in Asterix a bit more. Still love both though.
Sure I remember reading that Tintin had a Nazi subplot or something like that!!

Not really - I think this probably refers to a couple of very early Tintin stories, particularly 'Tintin in the Congo' which has a somewhat 'colonialist' storyline and has often been accused of being racist. It's very much a product of its time - the early 30s - and it's widely felt that Herge was just following the conventions of the time rather than being actively racist.
Damon, I did once read something about a missing Tintin adventure called Tintin in the congo - Is that really the reason it was never put into mainstream publication, because it was seen as rascist? I can't believe that as all the other adventures he went all over the world from India to the Picaro's!
Thanks for the info about the Tintin exhibition, will check it out.
Also, did you ever read the book about how Herge came up with all the characters and Marlinspike etc? I remember looking everywhere for that book but could never get my hands on it!

I don't know the precise history of 'Tintin in the Congo', but I think it was generally available in other parts of the world - it just wasn't published in an English edition until a couple of years ago. It's now available as a bit of a curiosity for Tintin enthusiasts:

I think the other book you're referring to is probably 'Tintin: The Complete Companion' by Michael Farr. I do have this book and it's great - gives all the info about where he got his ideas, plus it reproduces lots of his original source material so you can see where the images originally came from.

I love both Tintin and Asterix. I have all the Asterix books and videos and some Tintin vids. On a recent trip to Brussels I went to the Tintin store and got some goodies:D I was brought up on them with my dad and grandma being from Belgium.
