Could someone tell me what English beer/ale is closest to an American light beer? I'm told that you drink your beer at room temperature. True? I'm traveling to England next week. Just wanted to look like I not a typical tourist (which I am, unfortunately). Would like your advice though. Looking forward to visiting your wonderful country.

We dont drink beer at room temperature, who told you that rubbish! its much warmer than room temperature more like tea.
Seriously though most of our lagers on tap are cold and similiar to your Bud (which I didnt really like when I visited Arizona)

Enjoy your trip (vacation)

the closest thing to american light beer is known as alcohol free lager.

the nearest you'll get is the standard draught lager, about 4% IIRC

You can get Czech Budweiser (i.e the original stuff) at the Sheaf View Pub in heeley

I recommend that you try some british ales . Don't listen to dragonsoup about beer temp tho, most stuff comes out at about cellar temp i.e 5-10 deg c below ambient, but never 'ice cold'.

...Of course if you want to try ale but want it cold, try a bottle of Newcastle Brown.

Try a guiness too while you're here.

Best place for Guinness IMO is where it originated, ie over in Ireland... Proper Irish Guinness, lovely stuff!

That's not to say the English version isn't lovely stuff also, it's just that the genuine Irish article is even more so.

...again you can try the guinness extra cold if that is more to your tate. If you like that then try a guinness (normal) which has more taste (the coldness kills the taste)

Thanks, I'll try it. I'm used to my beer being ice cold. It will take some getting use to to drink it otherwise.

BODDINGTONS?! what the hell? That yellow ****? Don't think so. Dishwater!

Anyway. What you really need to NOT do when you come to England is go to any old bar/pub. They vary in what they sell a lot, many have beer from national breweries (Like said Boddingtons) and try to get a pub with pumps, not taps (the beer's crap out of them). Are you coming to Sheffielf specifically? If you are then we can give you a concise list to pubs selling the best beer in the region (unfortunately, they are usually in the scummiest areas too, re light district and all that :s)

Big Kev is totally right.

there are many local pubs that have (Real Ale). This is the real stuff, although you might take some time to aquire a taste for it as most has quite strong flavour. And most USA beers that I have tried don't really, which is prolly why they have to freeze your throat off.

Also there are many hundreds of pubs in sheffield. You would be better hooking up with someone as a guide, as some are really bad.
