View Full Version : Why don't you shop at Netto?

Inspired by the supermarket thread I've made a poll asking why people don't shop at Netto. Most people acknowledge it now sells some reasonable stuff at rock bottom prices, but still not that many people shop there, unless you are a poor student like myself!

I do shop there, but only for cheap branded stuff like Crunchy Nut Cornflakes and washing powder.

Wouldn't touch most of the own brands with a 10 foot pole.

Mind you they do have some cheap beer offers!

I guarantee anybody who ever tries any of the cheaper brands from the popular shops would be very impressed with Nettos own brand stuff. Take for example those packs of meat you get for sandwhiches, if you look at the meat content of the large supermarket brands it is always about 10-20% lower than the stuff from Netto! That maybe a bit of a poor example :) but does prove a point!

When I lived at home with my parents they always shopped at ASDA and since I started doing my own shopping at Netto I really have noticed most stuff is nicer!

BTW I don't work for Netto!! :)

I shop at Netto, ok so you have to be aware that some of the cheapo lines are what they are ...cheap (catering can of beans 49p and bl***y awful) but they have got a lot better offer than most of the other discount stores, they even had radio controlled planes in last week...ask toby he went for one.

They do have some really good offers. I bought a printer from there not too long ago, the only place that could get anywhere near the price was Ebuyer and after postage etc they were still about a fiver more!

I shop at Netto.
You just have to go in with an open mind, and buy the good value stuff and don't buy the cr*p.

You'd be crazy (or just nicely well off) to totally write off Netto, when so much of what it sells is identical or very similar to stuff that costs 70 - 100% at a supposedly "better" supermarket.

I used to shop at Netto many months ago - only for tinned and boxed branded goods though, not fruit, milk or bread. Non-branded stuff is very cheap, but as the branded goods are very competitively priced as well, I'd play safe and buy branded. The Netto at Sheffield Lane Top is a lot cheaper than Somerfield at Firth Park.

The only problem with Netto is image...and that's down to the smelly scruffs who shop there. A more sorry bunch of losers you're unlikely to meet*.

*Not including me, thank you very much.

They only stock basic stuff though, but that's surely enough for most mere mortals.

If you're shopping on a budget, try Netto. It's Scandanavian for value (I think).

We shop at Netto, and it's great.... In fact back when I was an NVQ retail student back in 1997 I actually worked in the South Road, Walkley branch.

MrH
07-07-2004, 18:33
Because a friend of mine bought some flour there once which had some weevil-type things living in it. She had to throw all the stuff from that cupboard in the bin.

That's Scandinavian for value!

That's added protein Mr H...lol and at no extra cost.

I agree with Abdul: it's the people who shop there that give NETTO its bad image. I have mentioned in another similar thread to this about the full-blown fight between two dubious females that my wife and I witnessed in the Queen's Road branch.

The floor was strewn bits of shopping and clumps of ripped out hair.

Anyone know when the next one is?

I only remember somebody (well when I went over to a friends house), and the chicken nuggets were vile. Also, the staff were complete morons - well in the Bexleyheath store.
On another occasion, I bought some PG Tips Tea Bags in there because they were cheap - and I got the "monkey cars" remember them, around 9/10 years ago. With Geoff and Co. in the plastic toys!

On another note, Kwik-Saves coffe "No Frills" it certainly is that - it's revolting.

We mainly do the shopping in Erith - Morrisons, Bexleyheath-Asda, or if on the way home from work he goes into Sidcup Tesco.

Several reasons really. AFAIK, the nearest Netto to me is the Walkley one, which at 3 - 4 miles is further than just about every other supermarket chain. The image is poor, and I'd guess the product quality is dire but I've never tried anything from there to know for sure. Do they sell brand names there? If so, I can see the attraction if they are selling the exact same products for a lot less.

Ah, but you're talking about southern Nettos! They must be different down there.

I bet they don't sell second-hand steam mangles, ferret food or tripe and onion recipe books. I bet the assistants don't wear hair curlers and smoke happily away on clay pipes and swig neat gin from pint pots as they serve you either.

No: I bet none of that stuff goes off in Kentish Nettos.

It's nothing to do with the quality of the goods at Netto..It's that dreadful yellow and black carrier bag that you have to carry around after you've been there..It's the "Skoda" of shopping bags...A woman on our street says, she wouldn't be seen dead with one as she always shops at M&S..(stuck up cow)

No, they don't really sell brand names per se, unless you count their "own brand" stuff, although they do sell branded beers.

Well, I know people who "wouldn't be seen dead in..<netto/tkmaxx etc>". Even if in another city where no-one knows them from Adam! Their loss, buy the same stuff from a more upmarket shop if you want, I'll stick to paying less for the self same things.

And yes going to Netto is like driving a skoda. Cheap, functional and reliable (can you guess what I drive? )

Sure it's full of people pushing four-abreast prams, shouting full volume at their older kids Kylie and Jared to "gerroff that purrit daaahn and gerrere NAAH!" but why is that a problem? It's a shop, not a social club. Just ignore them.

When we shop at Netto we take a few M&S carrier bags to put the shopping in.

...and get some very funny looks at the check-out. :D

Some very interesting posts here, another highly informed post by t020! The product quality as I have already stated with factual sandwhich meat proof is better than some "up market" supermakets.

You can get some brand names ie Kellogs, Coke etc for much less than other stores. These offers are even better when they get hold of stock with old labels for example or with a finished special offer printed on them. I got some Lloyd Grossman (sp?) dressing for 10p once as they had just brought out a new label!!!

Feel I missed an obvious option off the Poll, if one of the Mods would be so kind as to ad "I do" to the bottom I would be most grateful.

I don't - or at leasst didn't for a long while - because for the Archer Road site they grubbed up and patch of scrubland that had sparrowhawks nesting on it despite the fact there was a brownfield site a couple of hundred yards up the road - grrrrr!!!!

Your wish is our command.

Nowt wrong wi' Netto. I alternate between Netto, Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons, Adsa, Tesco (now that the Porter tart's paid her whack for gerrymandering), Sainsburys and M&S. I'd have a loyalty card for all of them if I could.

There's not a lot to do in R'ham at lunchtimes and it'd look a bit sad going to the same s'market every day. :D

Most people agree that the people who shop there and the general look of the stores puts them off. I think they should re-name it to:

Ghetto. :D

Although Morrisons is where we do our main shopping, we do regularly use Netto as well. The only problem with Netto is that the stores are smaller and don't have a very big range of products.. although they do sell quite a few well known brands including Marmite

I certainly wouldn't be put off by the image... if the goods are good and the prices are good then that's the main thing!

We should all write to Netto and tell them to dump a Netto Supermart right in the middle of Fulwood. They're obviously crying out for one, and are probably sick of Harrods Hampers and M & S Cuisine by now.

I flew back from Heathrow to Sydney two weeks ago proudly carrying a bright yellow Netto plastic bag as part of my hand baggage. I needed a bag to carry some magazines and the people I was staying with in Sheffield gave me the Netto bag as a joke. They thought it was hugely amusing, but no one seemed to notice/care in London and as Netto haven't quite extended their empire to Australia yet, no one gave a monkey's at Sydney airport.

I'm coming back in 4 weeks, so I may get the same people from Sheffield to meet me at Heathrow. I'll be carrying the same Netto bag just to embarrass them.

Anyone who carrys a Netto bag should be arrested and locked up.

I shop at Morrisons and about once a month go to Netto at SL Top to stock up on wash powder, comfort, bleach ETC.
Ther is a definate stigma carrying one and when my 4 year old was born i took my wife and the new born to my regular club ( Pitsmoor) now gone, and unaware to me she put all the babys items in a neto bag for everyone to see.
I was very embarassed and gruntingly told her off.

I have also done the Marks and Sparks bag trick to.
I now just wheel the trolley to the car and shove the stuff direct into the boot and put the trolley back as fast as i can to avod being seen by my mates.
If i do see anyone i know in there i always say, just gathring a few bits what i could'nt get at Morrisons.

Look, if it's so bad, don't bloody shop there. I really sometimes don't know who are worse, the chavs that do populate Netto, or the lah-di-dah snobs who obviously are'nt so much better than everyone else as they like to think, but try to hide their shame at not being.

How utterly, utterly sad

It's not a case of everyone who shops at Netto is a chav, more that everyone who is a chav shops at Netto.

There is a difference

Actually, chav is probably the wong word, since they do make a (lame) effort with their image - "Argos Bling" is a term I love for their preferred style. "Tez" is more the correct word to use. Tez? You know, the one's that have the sunstrip on the windcreen "Tez & Shaz"

Skoda is basically VW - the Octavia - for all intents and purposes is a Passat.

Squiggs

actually the Octavia is loosely based on the Golf chassis.

The equivalent of the Passat is the Skoda Superb

...just to clear that up

and mine is a proper skoda...designed and built in Czechoslovakia without any german influence. And all it's ever had apart from tyres, brake shoes, spark plugs and other consumables is a new exhaust and radiator. Not bad for a 10 year old car.

The cashiers at Netto.....erm.....let me rephrase that...SOME, not all of the cashiers at Netto are impolite.

When in the queue the other day at the Queens Road store, the cashier at the neighbouring till started shouting at a couple who were piling things up on the conveyor belt, telling them to not go so fast and to slow down. Then she screamed at them...'just how much money have you got?'

Another cashier argued with me about a deal they had on. The deal said 24 bottles of Stella was £10.99. They had boxes of 20. I picked up a box of 20 and then four single bottles. Trying to get her to understand what I'd done and how I wasn't going to pay anything but the advertised offer was a chore. Management had to be involved. Funny dodgy transactions and shufflings happened on the till. They refused due to the lack of bar coding...until I started quoting my consumer rights and the trade descriptions act, then they gave way....the manager ripped down the offer sign off the wall sharpish!

Does this Netto place supply hampers like at Fortnum & Masons.
If so I'll send the wife in , in disguise of course!
and do they pack your bags and carry them to the car?
I couldn't help noticing in the poll that the poor bags put some people off, who are they and where do they come from.

i dont shop at Netto as the food is not as good as say morrisons or safeways.
and the first & last netto i went to dident have a butchers or a freshly cooked chickens/pies/saus&cheese rolls ect, like they do in, say morrisons or safeways.

Netto is too cheap, hesent enough veriaty, lacks in quality. maybee i was just on one at the time, but when i walked out the shop with my goods in a bright yellow bag with big black NETTO, slapped allover it i felt a a right charly.

i do think its good to have NETTO tho, as its a good place to shop for those people who are on tight budget's.

No, they have "crummy" bags, there logo looks like a horse with a bucket clenched in its teeth. No, do they take it out to your car !! - doubt it.

I was just saying that I don't see the point in a Sheffield branch of Harrods' cos only "posh" people from the likes of Eccleshall, Whirlow etc would be able to A) afford to shop there and B) Live up to the exclusiveness of the Harrods name...

We were im Harrods in London a few years back when we went down for a Cliff Richard concert at the Royal Albert Hall, and felt out of place to be honest, cos we weren't dressed to the nines with a chauffuerr (sp?) car, and we could never have bought anything there cos of the prices.
