View Full Version : Anyone see Billy Connoly In Sheffield on TV last night?
jimso999 19-08-2006, 13:24 It wasn't a very big piece, He was toodling around the town on his motor trike mostly. Later in the programme, he took to the water on a canal barge. Being only an occasional visitor to the city, I am intrigued as to where the waterway is located. Can anyone say where abouts the film was shot?
What are the canal side areas like in and around Sheffield? Any nice waterside pubs or restaurants to look out for?
The area of the canal shown was on the attercliffe stretch heading towards rotherham.
slimsid2000 19-08-2006, 14:08 He never showed the sewage farm at Tinsley. Shame, i always think that is so representative of our city.
Jabberwocky 19-08-2006, 14:11 I was dissapointed, theres much more to Sheffield than a 5 minute drift along a canal. They should have devoted an entire prog to the city like they did for other towns and citys.
We went to see Billy at the City Hall a couple of years ago, in fact it was just after the infamous 9/11 in New York, but he still did jokes about Afghanistan and bin Laden (called him bin Liner, lol pmsl)... Most other Comedians would be wary of making a joke of something like that, especially so soon after it had happened...
slimsid2000 19-08-2006, 16:02 Remember when Billy exposed himself in the centre of London that time. I think he'd been drinking and it was Comic relief or some such. What a lot of fuss over so little
midvixen 19-08-2006, 17:22 Billy went down the canal at Tinsley, behind Valley Centretainment and Meadowhall Retail Park.
A friend of mine is the lock keeper there and met Billy and had a good Sheffield cuppa with him.
There was hardly any time devoted to Sheffield in the programme which I also found disappointing.
I think this was filmed wel over a year ago though, maybe he wil be back!
It was well over a year ago; I was struck by how much has changed in the few reasonably short years since he did that tour. The egg box and the Sheaf Square roundabout have been gone a good couple of years or more now.
chattycathy 19-08-2006, 18:56 At least we got a look in! And yes its at least three years ago now - look how much we have changed. Have seen Billy several times at the City Hall and he is worth every penny of the ticket money - we always laugh so much our sides hurt.
thats as to be sheffield worst dump down towards tinsley i say let rotherham have it lol along with the sewageworks just like they have the landfill be really nice a visitor to rotherham first sights a landfill, 2 cooling towers, a run down town alltogeher, s**t works lol and run down council estates.
and no i missed it last night what chanel was it on?
I missed it to, thankfully. How many expletives did he have to use to make himself appear funny?

The canal runs from the centre of town, through attercliffe to meadowhall and then continues to rotherham, swinton, mexborough - where the river don becomes 'the canal' and then separates nr Doncaster into its own channel to go through thorne and then joins the trent just before scunthorpe.
It's a lovely walk from town to meadowhall, at times you would never realise you were in a city.
At Meadowhall there is a point where you are within 'spitting distance' of the canal, the river don, the M1 (the tinsley viaduct), a railway line, the supertram and a whole load of roads and footpaths - almost every form of transport known to 'man'. It's not far from the airport there, where there used to be planes.
It's good by bike too - no hills!!!
I recommend it!
Our canals are one of the wonders of the modern world and are up for recognition as being of world heritage importance. The canal basin is one of the best 'historical' places in sheffield although there are several pretty uninspired modern buildings and the destruction of the oldest factory building in sheffield 'Sheaf Works' never fails to annoy and upset. This was 'destroyed' by the sheffield development corporation.
coyote13 21-08-2006, 01:26 as for billy, he's a comic genius, but obviously not to everybody's taste. I've been watching his act since the '60s in glasgow.
I like his tv prog but not that silly trike he rides, but, so what
jimso999 21-08-2006, 12:26 Thanks to you all for your posts. Coyote13, I will most definately take a look at the canal walk. Sounds like a good day out.
Johnnywarren 21-08-2006, 15:41 "Lake Derwent"

Grandad.Malky 21-08-2006, 16:49 What about the report in the Star regarding the five weirs walk?
“ a dangerous trail of bloodied junkies needles , used condoms, human excrement, beer cans and litter”
Does this walk pass the canal, the river, or both?
coyote13 21-08-2006, 18:28 'Five weirs' refers to the river. Barges find it hard to get over them...
Not that the canal is very neat and tidy.

For sure - takes little more than an hour or two.

Don’t the canal and river run side by side in places?
