I know 'Knit Today' (http://www.getknitted.com/acatalog/August_Additions.html)magazine has been mentioned on here recently, but I've just spotted it at Get Knitted. Due in very soon. I wonder if it's going to have the availability of 'Knitting' and 'Simply Knitting', or whether it's going to be another buy online magazine?

I'll be buying the first issue, of course, to see what it's like.

I have just received my copies of Knit Today. I have of course commandeered my copy and so have 9 copies for sale at £3.99. It is very like Knitting/Simply Knitting. Quite a few Rowan patterns in this first issue plus Rooster Almerino DK, Sirdar Firefly and Colinettes Lasso. Opal sock yarn is in there with a pattern in their Acapulco range. There is a motif library (intarsia and fair isle) and even a quick recipe to give you more time for knitting! No more info otherwise there will be nothing to look forward to.... Vogue Knitting Fall edition is here too. Bliss!

I wonder if it'll be around in the shops.
I'm not keen on KNitting magazine, but I love SK, so if its like that I will grab a copy.

It's depressingly similar to SK. It's got some nice pictures but that's it. Meh.

Bum. I was looking forward to something a little more experimental. I would have settled for adventurous or just plain different. I haven't seen a copy yet though, so I'll wait and see...

Not sure it is as good as SK.......can't see it being a winner on this first showing. (as usual, not trying for the saleswoman of the year award....)

BTW - have ordered more copies of Vogue as someone called in and cleaned me out of copies today ;-)

I still haven't seen a copy. I had a look in Borders but it isn't in stock. I'll be ordering Vogue Knitting over the weekend, so I'll order a copy of Knit Today too. I do enjoy this time of year for browsing the knitting magazines, patterns and catalogues. There's always so much more that takes my fancy.

Who on earth would buy all your copies of VK?!

(They have all been sent to their new owners who are now very happy bunnies - incidentally Jill, Get Knitted are selling it for 4.25, perhaps you should be upping your prices!)

Just ordered my copy of Knit Today from Get Knitted. Also remembered to tell them that I only order because of the pens and lollies. If it is similar to Simply Knitting I may not bother with it again as I already get far too many magazines and there's no point getting them if they rehash all the same kind of stuff. Also placed my order for the first issue of Yarn Forward...there's no way I'm committing myself to a subscription just yet, although the preview posts of some of the patterns included that they have on their website looks good...

I've just ordered a copy of Knit Today too, along with the new Vogue. I really need to cut back on the number of magazines I buy. I did make a commitment to only buy the American ones (Vogue and IK), though I've recently been tempted back to the UK ones  .

I'll assess this new one, and Yarn Forward when it's out, and shall probably decide which of the four UK knitting mags I'm going to continue to buy regularly. To be honest, I'm much hapier with the quarterly format of IK. It has sufficient patterns and articles which are of interest to me to keep me entertained til the next issue is due.

I usually get SK, Knitting, Vogue, and any others I happen to chance upon throughout the months. I do like the american ones, but being afairly new knitter I am often more compfortable with things like SK as I find them easier to follow. However, I think the American ones offer far more for the experienced knitter, so I can see why you prefer those. It would be nice if the new magazines were more like Vogue with more articles and more 'fashion' knit. Some of them I wouldn't knit in a million years but they're pretty to look at :)

I do like the patterns in SK; many of them are more down to earth than some of the monstrosities that Vogue occasionally offers :hihi: .

I prefer the articles in IK though. I know I'm running the risk of being called a knitting snob, but I sometimes find the articles in the British knitting magazines to be a bit superficial for me. ::Hecate runs away and hides:: ;)

My Knit Today arrived. Not impressed is my first reaction. It's too similar to SK. The beginners guide to knitting booklet that came with it is just wasted paper to me. It just seems to be re hashing the same stuff that's already out there. Limited pattern sizes, neutral and bland patterns, info on workshops etc that is included in every other mag. I also find it very uncomfortable and hard to read. I don't know if it's just me but the pages seem a little bigger than other magazines, and there just seems to be too much to look at on each page with no kind of order to it. Oooh listen to me, the magazine critic :)

In short, don't think I will order again.

Oh, and I'm annoyed cos there is a gorgeous beaded cardi top type thing that I would LOVE to knit from the new mag but it doesn't go up to a suitable size for me. Last time I tried to resize I got so stuck in the maths you wouldn't believe! Hmph!

My copy arrived today too. It is very similar to the other two British magazines, which is a shame because the market is crying out for something along the lines of a British IK.

The embroidery masterclass appealed to me, though that's mainly because I have an interest in embroidery as well as knitting. Interesting to see Mary Hickmott (sp) there too, authoring a couple of articles. She's big in the cross stitch world.

There wasn't anything about it I disliked, but then again nothing immediately jumped out at me either. It will probably be a magazine I'll buy if it features a particularly attractive pattern. I'm looking for excuses not to buy more magazines, so I don't think I'l go out of my way to buy this one again.

The embroidery totally puts me off. I'm not an embroidery person at all. In fact, anything that involves a tiny needle irritates me. I don't even sew up my own knitting because I am useless at it. That pleasure gets passed to my mum!

I agree - we need something more like IK.

:o :o :o :o :o

I love embroidery. I've just ordered about a ton of threads of various descriptions from Ebay, as it'll be a big chunk of my college course. Be prepared for loads of photos of wonkily embroidered artistic expression come September :hihi: .

I thought Mary might appear a bit because I subscribe to New Stitches which is her magazine and I got a leaflet and email telling me about Knit Today. I decided to wait and see what everybody else said about it before I tried it but with the reviews I seen I don't think I'll bother. I'll wait for Yarn Forward to come out at the end of September.

I am happy with the percentage I make on the mags. It covers the cost of my copy! I would prefer to give people the chance to buy more for less than less for more! (Do I sound sickeningly kind.... :-) You know that isn't true..)

I'm back in business both driving and knitting now and yesterday went down to the Wool Baa to pick up my copies of Knit Today and Interweave Knits. Maybe all the posts had lowered my expectations but I don't think Knit Today is too bad. I certainly love the little shrug in KidSilk Haze - I haven't really read it yet, just glanced through. Yesterday was one of those days, a struggle fom start to finish so I ended up with a tension headache and couldn't really face either knitting or reading. Back on track today though.:)

I agree, LadyElanor, I don't think the magazine was bad. I think it's because I was hoping for something a little different. 'Knitting' and 'Simply Knitting' are very similar in their approach, and 'Knit Today' seems to be very much in that fold.

Bought my first copy of SK this month (mainly for the free needles), but I'm not that impressed with it, for the money you could buy a pattern book from one of the yarn companies with more stuff in. Does anybody really want to knit a toy dog bed anyway? The articles aren't particularly interesting either, though the adverts for yarn stores got my attention... mmm....self patterning sock yarn....;)

Do you buy any of the other knitting magazines, knitbird? I highly recommend Interweave Knits and Vogue Knitting. They're both American publications, and as such are a little more expensive, though as they're published quarterly it isn't too bad really. The patterns usually appeal to me more than the ones in the British magazines, and the articles are usually more interesting too.

Had to grin at knitbird's remark about 'does anyone really want to knit a dogbed anyway?' Answer is 'yes'! I have a little grand-daughter and as soon as I saw the dog and accessories I thought that when she gets older she'll love that! I plan to buy the wool and knit it over the next 18 months or so, little bits here and there. Takes all sorts:D

Ooh no! I would never knit a dog bed!

There's a really lovely cat bed in one of the Stitch n Bitch books I'd like to make though :P .

I've just bought Knit Today, as I though i'd have a look into it.

Gotta say it took me all of about 3 minutes to flick through, nothing caught my eye, I usually enjoy reading 'readers letters' and such, but with this being a first publication, and all the questions being decidedly obvious 'How do I do a Yarn Over' it stinks of some editor somewhere just calling herself Beryl from Twickenham for the first issue

Shame because it'd be great to get a British Magazine that was a bit more modern, saying that I really enjoy SK :D

That made me laugh out loud because I thought the exact same thing as soon as I clapped eyes on that page

Bought a copy whilst I was away in Wells last week and was not impressed enough to buy it again:( Did like the Jaeger yarn that the kids jumper was made from (looked kind of camoflage - so son 1 may get one of those for Chrimbo).

I generally subscribe to rowan as most magazines have quite a lot of patterns I want or can adapt, though I didn't think much of last summer's. :loopy: This winter's issue though I think is fantastic.

Have just subscibed to interweave knits as I've only heard positive stuff about them, and I LOVE knitty (but then again who doesn't?)

As money's tight this is about it. I get some pattern books for yarns I like (the calmer collection is old but I love it) Maybe if I had more disposable income I'd buy the monthly stuff. :(

Yes, I was concerned that Rowan was starting to lose its way a little. I wasn't much of a fan of the R2 stuff either. The new Rowan has some lovely stuff though.

I don't buy many pattern books, though I have a couple of the RYC ones. The last one I bought was 'Gathering Roses' by Louisa Harding - a booklet of beautiful accessories (bags, scarves, hats and gloves). I really like her yarn, especially the angora/wool mix.

I think Rowan was trying too hard to be the Topshop of yarn companies with R2, plus the price of the yarn for the patterns I thought was WAY to expensive for something that would go out of fashion quickly.

I thought the first RYC books were a bit too "mature" for me, but I really like Classic Summer and the yarns are fantastic (though pricey). The designer seems a bit too keen on cables at times though.

I've not seen the Louisa Harding book, though her yarns are fantastic, I really like her use of colour.

I know what you mean. The ones I have are 'Classic Bambino' and 'Classic Holiday'. The former I bought for a gorgeous ballet-style wrap to knit for a friend's little girl and the latter for the crocheted shawls. Unfortunately, my crochet skills are way too poor to actually make any of them, but they're lovely to look at. Must start making my way through 'The Happy Hooker' :D .
