View Full Version : Blackberry bushes - where can I buy them glassrat 18-08-2006, 10:02 AM Is there anywhere I can buy blackberry bushes from, garden centres dont seem to have any. Also where could I get herb plants from? Thank you buffy2006 18-08-2006, 10:04 AM believe it or not I saw some in the 99p shop on snig hill. buffy2006 18-08-2006, 10:06 AM Herb plants you can buy from Morrisons. I bought a Basil plant and it is three times its original size. You have to repot them as soon as you get them home. They cost around 55p each. They are usually with the fruit and Veg and called "Living Herbs" nick2 18-08-2006, 10:43 AM Blackberry bushes are very easy to grow from cuttings, as they grow just about everywhere getting some cuttings should be pretty easy. Helly 18-08-2006, 11:40 AM I have several in my Garden, all of which are about to get a liberal spraying of weed killer come this weekend. If anyone wants any cuttings, you're welcome if you tell me how to do it! nick2 18-08-2006, 11:51 AM If anyone wants any cuttings, you're welcome if you tell me how to do it! If you're getting rid of the plant then just dig it up and divide it into smaller "clumps", each one will grow fine as long as it's got some roots and some leaves. Helly 18-08-2006, 12:05 PM So could I put the bits in plant pots until I found someone who wanted them or would that not work? torin8 18-08-2006, 12:09 PM So could I put the bits in plant pots until I found someone who wanted them or would that not work? Pretty much - just make sure each clump has a decent set of roots and some leaves and they should be pretty much happy in the pot. Helly 18-08-2006, 12:21 PM Thanks! I may well do that. Oh, hang on a minute, the blackberrys are all ripe now. Will that make a difference? nick2 18-08-2006, 12:42 PM Thanks! I may well do that. Oh, hang on a minute, the blackberrys are all ripe now. Will that make a difference? Nah, shouldn't do. Blackberry plants are very tough, they are incredibly difficult to kill. Helly 18-08-2006, 01:15 PM That sounds like a challenge! Helly 18-08-2006, 11:54 PM It's all gone terribly wrong! I hate gardening, I hate blackberrys and I hate mud! yuK! duckweed 19-08-2006, 12:34 AM Blackberry bushes are available at the right time in poundstretchers, 99p shop angel street, pound shop on moor and wilkinsons. I've got blackberries already but I have successfully planted raspberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants and gooseberries , just check they have healthy shoots, plant, water well and they'll grow. neeeeeeeeeek 19-08-2006, 12:58 AM plantconnection.com or co.uk good for herbs and other stuff. Also try Wilko as they sometimes have plants. depoix 19-08-2006, 12:41 PM ive just cut a forrest of the damn things down, what started as a shoot from next doors garden spread up my fencing along the next doors and is now two doors away, ive cut mine down as it was taking over, if you want fresh cuttings theres loads on the pondarosa or beeley wood, but keep them contained, theyre like triffids Winemaster 19-08-2006, 12:58 PM Thornless chester in a pot, excellent yield after the first years growth ;) Dick 20-08-2006, 12:08 AM Blacberries are the worlds easiest plant to grow. Go for a walk anywhere in the countryside or in town by the river. In a few minutes you'll see a blackberry bush. Cut off any stalk a few feet long. Take it home, stick it in the ground and watch it grow purdyamos 20-08-2006, 12:39 AM Can I step in with my muddy philistine boots and ask what is the difference between a blackberry bush and common bramble? In the next few weeks I'll be raiding the abundant overgrowth of the general cemetery for my annual 'blackberry' bonanza. If blackberries and brambles are different, what should I call my feral corpse-fed fruit? And why shouldn't taking a cutting of bramble constitute acquiring a blackberry plant? (I'm not being a snobby plant luddite, here. Genuinely interested!) Strix 20-08-2006, 02:54 AM The best way to get a 'cutting' from a blackberry, is to allow it to 'tip root' Strawberries reproduce this way too :) Peg a straggling branch down into a pot of compost and it's guaranteed to grow roots. Cut it from the main plant, and you've got yourself a new plant. I'd recommend you get your parent plant from a place such as www.kenmuir.co.uk though - as most of the 'blackberries' you find growing in overgrown gardens or along the road are actually brambles, and have a comaparatively low 'yield' ;) glassrat 21-08-2006, 04:56 PM wow, lots of suggestions :) thanks! ummmmm blackberries...... abbydoo 22-08-2006, 11:38 PM Is there anywhere I can buy blackberry bushes from, garden centres dont seem to have any. Picking some more this sunday for wine :) Don_Kiddick 28-08-2006, 05:06 PM There are hundreds of varietal differences in blackberries. Taste them as you go round, they'll be different sweetness/ tartness from different plants. Take cuttings from the plants that yield the nicest berries  craigpugh 24-03-2007, 01:47 AM oh my word. I just spent half an hour replying on another post helping explain to someone how to kill em. I just spent 3 years clearinbg them from my allotment, they are public enemy number one, if i want blackberries they are everywhere anyway growing wild. My advice is- DONT plant them. Nightmare!! |
