I'm looking out over West St, towards the church behind Boots.

I can see _HUGE_ flashes that take up the whole sky, they're lighting up every cloud I can see.

They're completely silent, and are far too bright to be fireworks.

Anyone got any ideas?

Sheet lightning?

Storms on the way me thinks. Not raining here yet though.

Hmm, no it's a different kidn of flash.

It's like it's lighting up the underside of the clouds, like a huge spotlight from the ground.

Here in rotherham theres a big storm with thunder and rain. Itll be coming your way. Plenty of really bright lightning which was silent for quite some time before the thunder. Youre welcome to it too!

I've been seeing these flashes for most of the evening over in Shirecliffe, but not heard a thing (apart from interference on the Radio / TV)...very strange.

YUp, it's just hit us here. :)

Weird, it really didn't look like lightning at all when I first posted.

Oh well, mystery solved.

My daughter was watching Poltergeist 2 with me last night and was just saying 'huh, as if clouds would gather over your house like that and you wouldn't notice.. dad, what was that flashing outside?' - perfect timing LOL

It could be Parkwood exploding again?

the 6.7.04 was a most outstanding event.
Went to bed at 10.30 pm and some 15 min's later rain began to fall. Next came the blue flashers followed by a distant thunder that seemed to roll on for a long time.

Yeah I saw flashes, definitely over Rotherham direction.
Quite bizarre that there was no noise though isn't it? could be something to do with atmospheric conditions not bringing the noise so intesnsely in the Sheffield direction.

Lightening. Its very common not to hear any noise. I remember sitting on the beach at night in the Domincan Republic watching silent electric storms inland over the mountains - awesome!!
