View Full Version : Story: 'The Soul Cages.'
Mantaspook 17-08-2006, 11:36 PM More rabid nonsense for you, this is a longer story than normal so grab a cup of tea and some chocolate digestives and settle down, I really don’t recommend reading this just before bedtime unless you are one of those people that actually like nightmares.
I thought it might be interesting to tell a story from the perspective of the opposite sex, but for brevity I cut out the thirty six pages describing shopping. :D
For your information
Stewart Copeland was the drummer in The Police.
This story shares its title with Sting’s 1991 album.
If Shoeshine’s moggy avatar disappears this is nothing to do with me.
I’d really appreciate it if after reading the story you DO NOT call the police.
Any feedback good, bad or indifferent very welcome.
Enjoy! The Soul Cages. (http://sheffieldwriters.ath.cx/SFStoryArchive/1155850543.doc)

shoeshine 18-08-2006, 01:26 PM What've you done to my lovely "Cat" avatar Mantaspook?
It'll have to be Mickey and Minnie until the cat comes out of hiding. :)
shoeshine 19-08-2006, 12:25 PM Touch and go there for nearly a full day, Mantaspook.....my cat's back.
Mickey and Minnie have been put back in the box for future use. :)

Only my third story and I'm getting rave reviews! Can I use the above quote to promote my book? :D
42fta 20-08-2006, 10:57 AM So long as I can say I knew you before you were famous! :hihi:
Mantaspook 20-08-2006, 11:47 AM That’s INfamous 42fta, INfamous….
The books going well, here’s a quick preview of the back cover.
“That’s not writing – it’s TYPING!” - Typical rejection slip
“He doesn’t need to put more fire in his work, quite the opposite, in fact” -OSCAR WILDE
“Damn you!” -42fta
“This book is soft, strong and very, very long, please remove the staples to avoid injury” - the usual disclaimer (at the insistence of the publishers lawyers.)
“A waste of trees.” -TERESA GREEN

coyleys 14-12-2006, 01:37 AM Sorry it took so long to get to this one Mantaspook, but I’m trying to catch up with the back log.
I really did enjoy this one, a fine piece of work, just my sort of thing, it definitely warrants ten house points and you can give the pencils out tomorrow.
I went through it twice and the only two things I found worth commenting on were….
1- pyroclastic magma flows.
I assume you mean pyroclastic cloud or flow and not magma
2- The End
Did Simon get his comeuppance?
What happened to Nat and her dad?
And what happened to Brono? On his wanderings did he end up on someone’s cdr/w and get used as a frizby?
I take it there will be a sequel?
Nice one Mantaspook.
Mantaspook 14-12-2006, 08:32 PM Whoops! You’re right Coyleys, pyroclastic flows are mostly hot gas, ash and flying rocks, I don’t know what I was thinking when I put magma in that sentence. They’re certainly a spectacular sight and I would like to nominate the cameraman who shot this footage (http://www.maniacworld.com/erupting-volcano.htm) for an award for services above & beyond the call of duty.
I thought that leaving the end of the story vague gave the reader the opportunity to make up their own mind whether the Simon got his comeuppance; I’ve thought about a sequel but not seriously, maybe another writing group member would like to give it a go?
As for Bruno, he was captured by Microsoft and has been incorporated into Windows Vista as a file shredder. :hihi:
pattricia 14-12-2006, 09:03 PM I like your stories so much Mantaspook that I read a bit at a time.Sometimes its like having ice -cream everyday ,and theres too much to read. So I read a bit, then go back the next day. :D
seriessix 14-12-2006, 09:39 PM Great story, esp. liked the ending - I was not expecting it at all, nice twist.

I don’t know about nominating the camera man, I think he may have been immortalised like the occupants of Herculaneum.
