if you go to upmystreet.com and type the postcode it'll soon tell you whether the whole area (school, estate) is decent. You'll find it really informative.

Apparently the 1988 Ed. Reform act did away with catchment areas and that's why we have Maggie's dear 'Open Enrolment' (open enrolment my arse). That's for secondary. I think you still have catchments for primary.

When i started secondary school in 1994, catchment areas still existed. It did with my brother a few years later as well. He was in the catchment area of a school, but wanted to go to another one. People in the catchment area got first choice. Luckily he got in though.

Catchment areas are still very much applicable to schools, including secondary.

PS. No need for cheap shots at "Maggie". If she was that bad, she wouldn't have changed the UK into the 4th largest economy after Labour ruined it in the mid 70s. Plus lets not forget that Labour have had over 7 years in power now and its 14 years since "Maggie" stood down, so its about time people stopped blaming everything they see as being bad on Margaret Thatcher, especially when (in the case of noseyrosie) they were only 3 years old when she stood down!

Yep catchments still exists. In fact it's the main deciding factor on what school your kids go to. You can of course opt for another but the kids in catchment get the places first.

If you go onto the sheffield City Council website www.sheffield.gov.uk and then education there is a form that allows you to see what school catchment you are in by typing in your street name.

You argue very nicely... perhaps a duel at noon next?

Going back to the original topic, the catchment system is still very much in place and I think the main secondary school covering Norfolk Park is Waltheof.

According to the BBC news today Tony Blair has mentioned some idea of giving parents more choice of secondary schools within the next 5 years.

when i was living in the Norfolk Park area, we had the joint choice of Norfolk, or Myrtle Springs. Now that Norfolk has gone, i'm guessing Myrtle Springs is the one - and it's awful, or at least was in 1994!
