View Full Version : Introduce Yourself to the Group
taxman 16-08-2006, 09:13 PM Well the title says it all really. Hopefully there will be many forummers who will contribute to the group either by describing their favourite walks or planning new routes and arranging unofficial meets.
So by means of an introduction here goes -
I'm a walker, birdwatcher, fungi fan and wildflower lover. My favourite walk around Sheffield would be along Rivelin and up Wyming Brook then along to Redmires. I'm also a regular wandering up and down the Porter Valley.
I'd really like to get out and try new walks, going out in Derbyshire a bit more. I am not a fan of heights or edges which is a great shame. I'd consider a 6 hour walk as a good walk and although I may speedwalk on the street or on the way to the pub I prefer a more leisurely pace when out in the wilds.
A pint in a pub at the end of a walk is sometimes, but not always desired.
Hecate 16-08-2006, 09:52 PM I'm more of an ambler than a walker. I like to take my time and take in the sights. Not that I don't like a strenuous walk, of course, but I don't see them as an opportunity to clock up as many miles as possible in one day.
My last spot of walking was on the Pembrokeshire coastal path, which is stunning. As an ex-Sheffielder, I don't get the chance to walk in the surrounding area nearly as often as I'd like. This group should give me the impetus to rectify that. I look forward to seeing what others' recommendations are.
A pint or three at the end of a walk is essential... :)
EDIT: Will probably only be able to make weekend walks, and possibly Fridays, depending on my timetable.
wendygs 16-08-2006, 11:15 PM Like unpressurised walks with a bit of a challenge with my preference being to take in the scenery as I amble at my own pace with a few companions.
After meeting taxman today to discuss this forum and our role as co-mods, I realised it would be worth mentioning my preference is for small groups of at least 3-4 people with at least 2 women for a spontaneous weekday walk in the country ie, Monday - Thursday inclusive.
It would probably be better to send me an email as soon as I get a joint address for taxman and me to use.
Thanks to everyone for much appreciated support with this group.
Bikertec 16-08-2006, 11:18 PM I like to walk normaly the woods at grenoside or warncliffe or the rocks at warncliffe craggs. I tend to forget time when Im out walking.

Wharncliffe is great. I've seen grass snakes and newts up there and a couple of times I've been late evening to look for Nightjars. Heard them but never saw them and the walk back through the woods in the pitch black is scary but fun
Le Phantom 17-08-2006, 10:19 AM Tries to avoid the AA approach, "Hi I'm Le Phantom & I'm a self confessed - hushed silence - walker - wild applause
Take 2:
Well with Graves Park on our doorstep there is plenty just near by but I love the Peak District for a good ramble. As others have side it's important to take in what you see and not just pile the miles on.
Love Froggatt Edge, Millers Dale, Lathkill Dale and the walk from Mam Tor to Win Hill must be an all time great. I've done bits of both the Cleveland Way and the Pennine Way.
Further afield Wasdale Head (Lakes) is heaven on earth and I've done the real three peaks (Snowdon, Sca Fell and Ben Nevis).
Pint at the end? Defo!
probedb 17-08-2006, 08:03 PM I really need to start walking properly (not that I stumble or anything) and with the Peak District 10 mins drive away I have no excuse really.
I commute by train to Sheff so I do about 45 mins walking a day just walking to from the train station and work.
I love the countryside and really would like to get out for some short walks to start of so if anyone is up for one let me know. I used to love it out at Fox House and round there as a kid.
GrinderBloke 17-08-2006, 08:31 PM I enjoy a nice walk and a bit of steady hiking, full on military style yomping seems to be enjoyed by some, but not me.
Recently I was out walking with a friend and he almost stood on a slow worm, if I hadn't told him to watch his step it would have been a flat worm :( I prefer walking at a pace which allows me to take in the natural beauty of my surroundings.
If a walk takes in a pub for a bite to eat and or a pint I'm happy :)
I was lucky to be born in Sheffield with so much natural history / and many green areas to enjoy.
Bikertec 17-08-2006, 10:45 PM Wharncliffe is great. I've seen grass snakes and newts up there and a couple of times I've been late evening to look for Nightjars. Heard them but never saw them and the walk back through the woods in the pitch black is scary but funIts nice to sit up on the crags (rock outcrop) at deepcar at night and just meditate. So relaxing.
designbunny 18-08-2006, 05:59 PM I work all week and so couldn't really join you guys for daytime walks, but weekends are good, well the one's i'm not working on are anyway lol
I go walking mainly at Blacka Moor, Wyming Brook, and around Fox House and that direction Peaks wise. We went for a nice walk round Edale the other weekend, which was really easy going by train. I would like to meet some new people, who don't walk too fast, and don't mind stopping for breaks!
xbecx 18-08-2006, 08:17 PM Blimey, I feel like an absolute beginner!! Well, obviously I know how to walk, but not investigated too much round here despite living in Sheff for 3 years now! A place that I do like to go walking is Monsal Dale, though have to admit the pub is equally as attractive as the views!!
Id like to meet new people and enjoy some more of the sights and would also only be able to make weekend walks.
I have walking boots, but am not totally 'geared up' so wouldnt be up for anything too hardcore!! Hope that's OK!

The pub at the top of Monsal Dale is certainly an attraction. I've done a coiple of mid-winter walks up there and it is so nice in the old barn. My only complaint was that the beer was too cold, it had obviously been pretty cold down in the cellar.
sarbo 18-08-2006, 08:58 PM Intro? OK...here goes!
I'm not super fit but I love the Peak District and walked there most weekends last year, usually 6 - 12 miles followed by a beer and sometimes a bite to eat. As well as that I 'did' the Snowdon horseshoe one bank holiday when it was busier than Meadowhall just before Christmas. Not the time or the place to go if you want to get away from it all!
I work during the week Monday to Friday, but would love to meet a small group of people to walk with at weekends. Have you ever walked in the Peaks and had to wait 4 hours for a big snake of Ramblers Association members to go over a stile before you can? That wouldn't be my cup of tea. lol
I'm female, 37, and I love nature and the countryside. When I'm out walking my camera is glued to my hand as I love to take pics of wildlife and the beautiful places I pass through. I like all animals so walking with people who have dogs would be fun although not essential, of course. I used to take out RSPCA dogs for a walk and usually landed up in the woods near Grenoside. Is that Wharncliffe Edge? I'm not sure, but I loved it all the same!
If nothing definite is arranged on here, anyone who thinks they might like to walk with me, please drop me a line. Age isn't an issue for me at all, but a good sense of humour is vital!
sarbo
Strix 21-08-2006, 04:31 AM I guess I have to introduce us both, as Mr Strix is an infrequent forum lurker ;)
We both enjoy some relatively serious walking - jokingly referred to by Mr Strix's colleagues as 'extreme beagling' :D
The preference is for up hill and down dale, at a steady pace, designed to put the mileage under the belt without eliciting exhaustion ;) Stops are not frequent, but are planned for the best views/shelter depending on the weather!!
We mostly wind up in Edale, but we holiday in Scotland frequently, where exploring new territory is essential, and North Wales isn't a foreign country to us ;) Mr Strix has completed the real 3 peaks.
Having said all this, we frequent Graves and Endcliffe parks, and Totley Woods, and the fields and meadows of Woodhouse. We don't seem to spend much time in Rothervalley Country Park though
A good walk isn't complete without a good dog pub to finish it off
Anybody who fancies joining us is welcome to PM me, and we can take it from there ;) (sharp axes most unwelcome :suspect: )
PS - I'd fancy exploring somewhere south of here for a change, if anybody knows the territory ;)
Edit: Weekends are a favourite, but evenings are great for the shorter routes round Edale, when it's not chocker with 'weekend traffic' on the footpaths :D
I've only just realised this group is up & running (I think I was on holiday when it hit the forum) I'd just like to say hi & register my interest in joining in some of the walks
I'm fairly limited in my knowledge of the area (despite having been here for over 3.5 years now) but I'm particularly interested in walks that are reasonably easily accessible via public transport (as I don't have a car).
I have to agree with taxman when it comes to heights & edges (as walking with my eyes shut probably isn't a good idea :| )
Like xbecx I have walking boots but that's about it - I definitely prefer a steady pace. Rushing is for appointments only!
BlankFrack 21-08-2006, 03:24 PM I haven't been for a good long yomp for too many months cos all my walking chums rather inconsiderately started churning out tiny offspring. So please count me in for any weekend wanderings. I'm in the "walking boots but not much else" camp. Oh and ending up in a pub is a very good thing indeed.
and the walk from Mam Tor to Win Hill must be an all time great
mmm...that is such a lovely walk :)
EDIT: I'm can walk any day until 11th September. After that I can do most Saturdays, occasional Fridays and a few random Sundays (although short Sunday walks that let me get home by 3:30 are fine anytime). Is that complicated enough?
beckelina 22-08-2006, 12:56 PM Hi there - I am a recent arrivee in Sheffield from Cornwall and now working in Stocksbridge for the Steel Valley Project.
I am a keen walker and am now lucky enough to live on the edge of Totley well within reach of plenty of lovely peak walking - am interested in learning about new areas and meeting new people!
At the Steel Valley Project we also organise guided walks for everyone to join in - our next one is on Saturday 26th August.
It is the High Bradfield Wood and Water Wander - a guided walk around Agden and Damflask reservoirs - if anyone is interested meet at The Old Horns Inn, Bradfield at 10am. This walk is probably medium level - hoping to return to Bradfield for 3pm. Call Matt on (0114) 283 0880 for more details as I am unfortunately on holiday! I am planning one for Wharncliffe Crags in October though, also as part of Steel Valley Project.
purdyamos 23-08-2006, 06:16 PM Oh that sounds good, Beckelina. I did a special college project about the Sheffield Flood so it would have been a very interesting walk knowing the history there. Unfortunately, I've pledged myself to the Porter Valley Walk. Can't miss meeting Brudepooch!
In the past I've done a lot of walking but not so much in the last year or two. I've got stamina for length and could probably easily do the more hardcore treks, but I don't have top-notch equipment. As most of my walking was done on my own, I tended to stick to the well worn paths, river valleys, and edges. I'm not experienced over blank moorland. Partly due to cowardice of getting lost and being perished by the elements I've never even been up Kinder Scout. I'm a bit embarrassed about that.
As I'm public-transport dependent, if there were walks away from bus routes arranged (any lifts in cars would of course be petrol-money-contributed) I would delighted. But I'm happy going anywhere really.
SHsheff 23-08-2006, 08:21 PM I'm into skies, bleak moorland, heather, clouds, walking in the rain, the effort of plodding up hellish mountain-sides for the exhilaration of being on the top, seeing no-one else the whole time we're out, just looking around and seeing no sign of civilisation.
I'm fairly proficient with a compass and a map, and will happily and with great pleasure share what knowledge I have with anyone interested, but will gladly glean all the info I can from someone who knows more! (And there are many, many people out there who are far better than I, without any doubt.)
I'm not hugely big on walking at low level, parks and such like, and I have to say that I see woodland as a means to an end (are we there yet?) in order to get to the (high) bits that fill my soul with joy. :)
I'm not as fit as I used to be, and I'm not as fast as the young'uns who seem to throw themselves down over rocks and drops with nary a thought for the consequences. I'm a firm believer that a party moves at the speed of the slowest member, and indeed it's rather nice to take your time as you progress.
Due to my work-pattern, I'm around (sometimes) during the week, as well as weekends. If anyone cares to go back (via 'Edit') to their profile to give info as regards when they're likely to be available (eg, Mondays, or only weekends, or whatever) that would give an indication and encouragement as to who might be worth a quick PM on a particular day, just in case you happen to be available...... :)
If you're localish, or on the way out to where we're going, I'm very happy to pick you up and drop you off, if you're otherwise limited to public transport, so a rough location might be good too.

Good idea. I've edited mine :) .

Superdoop! (just checked out that you might be able to make Fridays..)
However, Hecate, are you based elsewhere? Are you available for a walk in Sheffield on a Friday? (or any other day?)

I am, and I think I am :) . Probably not as frequently as most though, due to the traveling. I think I have Fridays off from September so Friday afternoons would be alright, and if someone could put me up for the night I'd be up for an occasional early start on a Saturday or Sunday.

Yay! Is that an offer then? You're too kind :) .
tess667 24-08-2006, 01:13 AM Right an introduction: Most of you will already know me so no point going over the very basics.
I tend to be a fair weather walker and some of my favourite routes are out in derbyshire on disused railway lines, a favourite walk is on the monsal trail at the Buxton end, not recomended for the unfit!!!
Walks locally consist of a plod(In my case) and a pull (dog) down the road about 10 minutes to a playing field and opposite a pond and we have a wander round there before ambling home again!!
SHsheff 26-08-2006, 10:15 PM Following several very enjoyable, but impromptu (weather-inspired), walks recently, I thought I might just give another nudge in the direction of anyone who might like to receive a PM (or a text message, preferably) the next time we decide to go somewhere.
If you're in the 'pool' of 'possibles' we can give you a shout! Let me know, either via PM or by posting on here, when you're likely to be around (daytime/weekends only etc), and where you live (approx) and if you have transport or not if you'd like to be invited.
Otherwise, keep watching out for threads of walks being organised - or start your own thread!
:)
I suppose I should say "Hi" in this thread as I've posted a couple of replies in this group now. Me and the fella just like getting out into the amazing scenery Northern England has to offer. Also v fond of the Western Highlands. Looking for inspiration, motivation and walk ideas mainly.
jomarch 28-08-2006, 06:41 PM Hi
I'm in the north-west of the city, not far from Loxley, Bradfield, Ladybower etc. I'm a bit of a novice 'stroller' rather than a serious walker, like to look and see rather than be in a hurry to finish (even though the pub would give me an incentive!), but do possess some under used boots.
Due to work commitments can only walk at weekends, I have a car and would be willing to offer lifts and I don't have a dog. Big problem, as a dog seems to be a pre-requisite for anyone who walks around here.
Favourite walks- places where no one else goes and preferably no steep hills!
SHsheff 28-08-2006, 07:41 PM Hi

No problem at all! Not unless you want to join the dog-walking walks.. ;)
Otherwise, most of us don't have dogs, but just walk. And not always up steep hills, either, tho' around this area there do tend to be hills somewhere along the way.
Feel free to PM me if you'd like to be included in impromptu walks (in groups that include me, obviously, I'm sure other people walk too!), otherwise I look forward to seeing your name on lists for advertised walks.
:)
Anorak 29-08-2006, 09:41 AM Hi, thought I'd introduce myself, seeing as that's what the thread says. I'm new to Sheffield, and new to this site. Recently moved from quite a rural area with lots of places to go walking. Previously enjoyed walking on a regular basis, but have been a bit reluctant to get out since I moved here (don't get me wrong I'm by far no expert walker - like taxman, don't do hills and heights). I'm not familiar with the area, so still learning my way around, and where the best places to go walking are, feel a bit vulnerable on my own - the city is a bit of a culture shock for me. I've discovered the Rivelin Valley and the canal - but that's about it. I drag my son along with me to walk when I do get out - thank goodness he likes walking too. I'm hoping to meet some people here who share my interest. I think this group is a great idea.
babsie 29-08-2006, 02:02 PM Hello everyone,
My fridn Donna and I will be doing Hadrains Wall next year to raise cash for McMillan Cancer Support. There is room for a couple more - we shall be staying at B & B's en route and we expect to take a week.
Need to lots of trainging in between, so we would be up for joining a few walks from October onwards. Also, if anyone is interested we have our first fund-raiser this Saturday at BAldwins Omega - Auction and Dinner £25 PM me for details. Looks like a good group this!
FolkmasterG 12-09-2006, 04:10 PM Hi everybody,
I am new to this board, and new to walking. I have been looking over SF, and found this group.
I'd really like to become invloved in walking in and around Sheffield, to find out more about the area, and to meet some like-minded individuals. I am based up near the University, and I rely on public transport.
I don't really have any walking preferences, or, should I say, I'd like to gain experience of different types of walking, different areas etc.
From the discussion already going on, it seems like there is a lot of activity in this group, so I look forward to getting stuck in!
Thanks everyone,
Gideon
willman 12-09-2006, 05:49 PM i've been tempted a few times to post but usually run scared of doing so.
potentially available most days except weekends - unfortunately domestic commitments take up most weekends.
can usually fit a friday walk in at any time, only restriction is time.
do need to be home before it gets dark - actually before i have to start cooking tea.
so inreality any day - 3-4 hour walks.
Bambi 12-09-2006, 06:10 PM Hi there. I would love to join you for a good walk outdoors. Available Saturdays and sundays mostly.
purdyamos 12-09-2006, 06:40 PM Hello everybody-new-peeps!
I hope the 'weekends are free' people have noticed our cemetery and picnic day this Sunday See the thread for it. It won't be the usual march over heathery hills, but a good opportunity for newbies to break the ice and get used to some faces. :)
Lubba 12-09-2006, 08:01 PM Hi there
I am a volunteer at BBC Radio Sheffield. We are organising walks as part of the breathing spaces campaign - check out www.bbc.co.uk/breathingplaces, and are looking for people who could share their knowledge of flora and fauna on a guided walk. There will be a presenter there aswell. There would be 3 dates in october and 1 in december. If anyone is interested let me know and I will pass on contact details for the producer at radio sheffield,
Many thanks,
Lucy
philipz 29-10-2006, 10:14 PM hello everybody! My name is Philip and i come from China.
I really want to make friends with all of you .
I leave my email adress to you .If you want to take a walk could you let me know so that i can join together:-)
email:didibaba.z@gmail.com
fuzzy 23-11-2006, 12:33 AM I would like to join in the walks at some time. I've been lurking around here for a bit, though some of your walks seem an awful long way as i haven't done anything for a while.
I like to walk and take vast amounts of photos. I prefer the flat like walking on the beachfront, though quite impossible here. I am quite clumsy and usually end up on my bum at some stage if there is a down section, and Nomme would say i don't do uppy, but i will if its not too much.
I can do most weekend but not any you have put up that i have seen so far and we have just got an allotment so walking has been out of the question. I also at the minute get school holidays off.
I have done walkin all over the place, love Cornwall, Northumberland and Scotland, but mainly do Rivelin. I also like there to be something else to see, so walk to something and back. I love it when it is early on a cold morning, frosty but sunny.
Anyone fancy a wander round Yorkshire Sculpture Park one weekend??
feargal 23-11-2006, 10:41 AM Anyone fancy a wander round Yorkshire Sculpture Park one weekend??
I love the Sculpture Park! I'd be up for that. Went to Rivelin at the weekend too - it was lovely (but quite busy).

Yeah, when are we going to the sculpture park? Get it sorted, missus!
Niklek 07-01-2007, 10:20 PM Hi,
first post here so a little introduction-found this forum by accident, only found walking as a hobby these last few years so playing catchup and learning all the time, i'm walking regularly in the peak district and keen to continue but also to start walking in the dales and lakes as this is new to me, including weekends away if possible.
Due to work, most walking is weekdays with the odd weekend thrown in, i would very much like to join a small group(s) one upwards, to gain experience/enjoyment/make friends etc :)
no offence to any large groupie's out there but not keen on coach trip's to walk in a massed line.
I consider myself reasonably fit- i'm not a mountain goat though:suspect: usually walk 6-15 miles but prefer not to route march as taking in the scenery/wildlife/photography etc if possible is part of the enjoyment.
If none of this has put you off please feel free to contact me,any offers or advice is appreciated thanks.
purdyamos 07-01-2007, 10:52 PM Niklek, welcome to the group, and the forum!
Don't worry, we don't do massed line marching in big groups. There is always time to stop and take in the view (have you looked at our photography section? That's a lot of loitering!). Especially now it's winter, we're taking things quite easy and stopping off in pubs and cafes a lot. The thing to do is keep looking out for new threads to come up on the walking group page, and if you fancy one, turn up! We have people of all levels of experience, so don't feel intimidated. Hope to see you soon. :)
Godzilla 07-01-2007, 10:53 PM Just keep your eye on the Walkers Group threads. There's something there for everyone, and numbers can vary from 2/3 to a dozen. Nothing too overhwelming. I plan to instigate a midweek walk round Damflask reservoir in the not too distant future.
fuzzy 07-01-2007, 11:06 PM Damflask is a really nice walk. I did it many times in the summer when my son was out for his sailing lesson.
Niklek 08-01-2007, 07:45 PM Thanks for the welcome and reply purdy, yes i have looked at the photo's as i'd been getting a feel for the forum for about 2 weeks now, i often enjoy a pub or cafe as a treat for a good or long walk especially after bad weather which is quite regular as i walk all year round, am looking forward to joining a walk thanks.

Thanks for reply, not heard of Damflask before but have done a little homework since, i would be interested in your walk if i'm available, i've done ladybower/parts of derwent, lamalound and errwood before.

I'm currently looking for a job so once I start working weekends will probably suit best for getting out walking! Looking forward to getting out and about will keep watching the forum for the next time you all are going out!
SpiderPete 10-01-2007, 02:53 PM  ello, I believe this is the thread to say "ello" "boo I`m new to walking" blah blah blah.
So ere we go, "I`m new", I never read the Group`s threads, as nothing interests me, but this one does the "walking group".
I want to do more walking this year, to loose the vast weight I have on my body, although I need to get the right gear first, lol.
I went on my first walk below:
http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=143844
I prefer the walks which have "pubs" attached to them, just somewhere to sit down, nothing to do with the alcohol I will comsume at the pub. :hihi: :hihi:
So once again  "ello", some of you know me as I have been around the Forum for a while, and I am sure I will meet new faces on future walks.

oh and i won't hold it against you coming from rotherham  :D

Hello SpiderPete welcome, you maybe new to walking but not to posting eh !:hihi:
nothing wrong with a pub attached but prefer it at the end of a walk as if it's in the middle in my experience walking goes straight out the window
good website by the way especially the sci fi
